You forgot the extra 10% in the off-season.

They presently have $15.4M available.

They would need to shed $8.5M by opening day, but Horton's LTIR $5.3M would cover part of it.

I believe they can LTIR Horton in the off season as well.

These are very similar overall players and im quite happy with these deals. 50 points from both of them is well within reach, if not the expectation.

There seems to be a perception that Kapanen is the greater overall talent, but I think I'd rather have Johnsson if I had to choose
I’d take Johnsson too. Kappy’s game is too North-south and he doesn’t bring a whole lo to the table offensively besides his rocket of a shot that isn’t accurate. I see Johnsson as the more cerebral player who can contribute offensively while Kappy is your ideal middle 6 guy who can play all ends of the ice and stand out on the PK.

They can, but for some reason it affects their flexibility during the season.

Don't ask me to explain it to you.
Ya. I think it affects the maximum amount they can use Hortons LTIR during the season. It's weird.

18 players signed. 6.94 left + 5.3 Horton Ltir. So about 12 M left.

Marner and the remaining 4 players. Still not enough cap.

Who else gets traded?

I don't mind Kadri to the Canucks, Canucks bottom 6 was outscored 2 to 1 last year.

Well there is the signing of players but also there is the fact the team needs to make trades. This team isnt good enough. Especially with the loss of Gardiner and probably Hainsey. So far it is the same as last year minus some key pieces. Dubas has some major wheelin and dealin to do!!

I am veru curious who all gets traded here to improve this squad... Leafs are so close from being a real good team but are just a couple big trades away

Actually, what's not fair is revenue sharing with all the food stamp teams which is 80% of the NHL.

Run your business properly or die and fold. Doesn't matter to the NHL elite teams.
Gotta love hockey elitists! No not really. The NHLPA probably wouldn’t be too happy about losing franchises... less franchises leads to less growth of new fans leads to less interest in the sport leads to lowering of tv revenue from contract with the NHL, so your 16 team NHL would most definitely fold just because of your and other “fans” like you. Many NHL fans are probably glad you’re not the commissioner; I know I am!

:skeptic:

Is there sarcasm implied ?

Nylander was a less important player than Marner in both the 2016-17 and 2017-18 regular seasons.

Add to that the 2017-18 playoffs, and the comparison is ridiculous.

Nope. 2016-17 they were comparable. 2017-18 Nylander was better in basically everything.

I fully agree with you.

And don't forget that less franchises mean less jobs for NHLPA members...

Goals and assists are not the only criteria to compare players, but Marner had 8 more points in less ice time.

And he was a complete warrior during the playoffs while Nylander became a ghost ironically afraid of his own shadow...

Overall points are a terrible way to evaluate players, I agree.

Yes, let's rewrite history. Marner got dominated by every underlying metric but managed to score. Nylander dominated every underlying metric (against the bergeron line mostly) and was able to score some.

Why?? On the Habs alone we have Paul Byron and Andrew Shaw on similar contracts for similar production. I'm sure you can find an example of a similar middle 6 forward with similar stats on this contract on most teams in the league. It's a meh contract as in it's fair. Talk about low expectations for Dubas that it's "fantastic" he didn't overpay for a 20g middle 6 forward's bridge contract?
Did you really just compare a 22 and 24 year old to a 28 and 30 year old? Really? That’s your argument?

Dubas with 7M to sign Marner:

Plus Nathan Hortons 5.3M AAV Cap Hit. Not sure when exactly those dollars can be spent as cap space though.

So why did Johnsson get 1 extra year than Kapanen? Is it that they don't want them both to become free agents at the sametime?
