I was just wondering this. Sorry I didn't see a thread on it. Who are the all time greats in terms of career and not peak by position?

Even though I think Hasek is the greatest goalie of all time, I'm surprised to see him being mentioned here so much, given that the OP said in terms of career, not peak by position. I realize there's more to Hasek's career than just his NHL time, but when most people (myself included) think of Hasek, they think of his 8-year span in which he won 6 Vezinas. Same with Dryden, who I saw listed for someone - he did win 4 cups, so career wise he's a pretty strong selection there, but would he really be ahead of guys like Brodeur or Sawchuk who managed to hold most the career records?

Don't get me wrong - I think measuring players by career is less interesting (and important) than measuring by a combination of peak and career both, but that was what the OP asked for.

Except for jkrx's Delvecchio, it will be pretty consensual.

I see how points could be made for....

- Potvin vs. Lidstrom
- Brodeur vs Hall vs Sawchuck
- Bossy vs Jagr
- Trottier vs Mikita

Are their peaks not part of their careers?

Agreed about Delvecchio.

Disagree about Bossy vs Jagr. That's a clear win for Jagr peak prime or career.

I would say it breaks down to something like this:

Centre

Gretzky
Lemieux

*pretty much consensus positioning, but some put Mario on top

Beliveau

*again, pretty much consensus

Morenz
Mikita
Esposito
Messier

* most would go Morenz then Mikita, but some might switch, and Espo and Messier might make it onto a few lists

Wingers:

Howe

* hard to argue for anyone else

Hull
Richard

* consensus 2-3, but lots of debate on the order

Lafleur
Jagr
Bossy

* there's some legitimate debate between how the three rank, though Lafleur seems to be considered the best. I don't think there's really much argument for anyone else

Defense:

Orr

* no debate really

Harvey
Shore

* consensus 2-3, but lots of debate on the order

Bourque

* pretty much consensus 4

Lidstrom
Potvin

*the usual 5-6 in some order, though Lidstrom probably has more support. The odd person might add Kelly or Robinson

Goaltenders:

Hasek
Plante
Roy

*basically the consensus top 3, though some might add guys from the next group, and there's lots of debate on the order here

Brodeur
Sawchuk
Hall
Dryden

*again, lots of debate on the order here, and some people might put these guys into the above list, but there isn't really anyone outside of these top 7, unless someone really feels strongly about Tretiak

How close do Sakic and Yzerman come to top 5 at their position?

Well, I have them below Trottier, Esposito, Messier. There's also an argument for Milt Schmidt. Unless I'm forgetting somebody, that's where they belong. Basically, Top-10, or Top-10 very serious candidates.

I admit that Delvecchio was a bit of a homer choice but he kept producing throughout his whole career (22 seasons). Not many 50s players did that.

I'd say Bobby Clarke is above Sakic and Stevie Y as well.

Peak for sure.. I mean he was putting up 100+ point seasons while being probably the best defensive forward ever but for career?

Bobby tailed off quickly once the mid-70s no-parity nhl got its act together again with the wha.

For sure he's right up there in that same group but I just am curious why you guys would rank him ahead of Yzerman and Sakic for career as well?
