Top 15 Defensemen for 2011 Draft
Now that the U18’s are over and most players are done playing for the year, it is a good time to get a feel for how people are ranking the D’s for this year’s entry draft in Minnesota. Take a stab at making your own list or to comment on any list submitted.

Here is my stab at naming the top 15 D’s in the 2011 draft. I was very tempted to put Ryan Murphy @ No 2 overall and am still toying with the idea - this guy is going to be uber-special in the NHL even if it takes him a little longer to get there than some of his compatriots. Also, even after watching Jonas Brodin recently @ the U18’s, I am still a bit undecided as to what kind of player he will be in the NHL - any help would be appreciated.

1. @ 2 - Larsson, Adam - 6’3 200 R - 37-1-8-9-41
2. @ 4 - Murphy, Ryan - 5’11 176 R - 63-26-53-79-36-(+22)
3. @ 8 - Hamilton, Dougie - 6’4 193 R - 67-12-46-58-77-(+35)-still playing
4. @ 11 - Siemens, Duncan - 6’3 200 L - 72-5-38-43-121-(+40)
5. @ 13 - Beaulieu, Nathan - 6’3 191 L - 65-12-33-45-52-(+44)-still playing
6. @ 17 - Oleksiak, Jamieson - 6’7 240 L - 36-4-9-13-55-(+14)
7. @ 19 - Morrow, Joe - 6’1 198 L - 60-9-40-49-67-(+23)-still playing
8. @ 23 - Brodin, Jonas - 6’1 170 L - 42-0-4-4-12
9. @ 28 - Murphy, Connor - 6’3 192 R - 14-3-3-6-6
10. @ 30 - Klefbom, Oscar - 6’3 201 L - 23-1-1-2-2
11. @ 34 - Musil, David - 6’4 205 L - 62-6-19-25-83-(+1)
12. @ 35 - Mayfield, Scott - 6'4 200 R - 52-7-9-16-159-(-18)
13. @ 41 - Clendening, Adam - 6’0 195 R - 38-5-20-25-80-(+10)
14. @ 44 - Sproul, Ryan - 6’4 185 R - 61-14-19-33-36-(-15)
15. @ 47 - Edmundsen, Joel - 6’4 200 L - 71-2-18-20-95-(+3)

And my next 5 are:
16. @ 49 - Russo, Robbie - 6’0 190 R - 52-3-19-22-23
17. @ 54 - Bell, Myles - 6’0 202 R - 68-14-31-45-86-(-14)
18. @ 59 - Percy, Stuart - 6’1 186 L - 64-4-29-33-50-(+50)-still playing
19. @ 63 - Kichton, Brenden - 5’11 185 R - 64-23-58-81-31-(+55)-still playing
20. @ 65 - Bengtsson, Rasmus - 6’2 190 L - 45-2-7-9-6

nice list, love the effort! :handclap:

I think I would swap Russo and Clendening imo... I think Russo has really stepped up and become a name again as a potential late first round pick. Clendening is a solid prospect with more flash, but Russo seems to be the more consistent player of the two...but it is a toss up and just my personal opinion.

One player you did leave out is Scott Mayfield USHL...not sure if you forgot about Mayfield, but I seriously doubt he is still on the board come pick 35...

U are right, I did leave him out and coincidentially, I have him @ 35.

Nice to see Rasmus Bengtsson get some kind of recognition. He has a very high ceiling and nobody seem to take any notice of him at all. :shakehead

If he pans out he will be bloody fantastic d-man.

I am not sure if Joe Morrow goes that high..

i really like the kid a lot, as Portland is my favorite CHL team, but is he is byproduct of that talent, or is he standing on his own legs?

I think Morrow is a second round pick, I just am not sure he can go top 25 this year with some of the other dmen out there...

It took me a long time to finally admit my love for Morrow because as a former resident of Portland I thought some of my love might have been home town favouritism. However, after reading this blog from the Pipeline Show http://thepipelineshow.blogspot.com/2011/03/pickin-brains-top-whl-d-man-for-2011.html I finally decided to move him to where I thought his true value lay which is as you can see very high.

Obviously, those that are Morrow fans believe he is a legitimate PMD with PP qualities who will be successful in the NHL. Like you, not everyone is sold on Morrow but he does have a fairly high legion of big-time fans like me.

Nice job with the write up. I agree with you on Murphy. I think which ever team drafts him needs to be very patient with him.

Agree with the top 5 completely for the most part (I'd switch Beaulieu and Oleksiak), outside of that theres some disagreements but theres so much ambiguity after that that its not a problem at all.

Definitely liking that more and more people are seeing Murphy is better than Hamilton and not having Hamilton above him because hes big.

Surprised no one else has done their own list yet. I guess its hard because with most of these lower players most people probably haven't even seen even a minority of them.

Needs to improve his d-zone coverage a lot but I love his ability to move the puck out of zone, excellent passing touch, timing, reading.

I would like to see a goaltender list too. :)

Top 10 Goalies for 2011 Draft
OK, here is my stab @ the top 10 goalies for the 2011 draft. Beyond, the top 4, no two lists are likely to be even remotely the same. Many goalies beyond 4 are backups so nobody has a real good handle on them. I am not a goalie guru but if you want to get a goalie guru’s prospective, go to Jerry Shields blog spot @ http://www.goalierankings.com/

1. @ 37 - Hellberg, Marcus - 6’5 185 L - 31-5-2.04-.935
2. @ 42 - Gibson, John - 6’3 201 L - 32-1-2.64-.918
3. @ 52 - Gibson, Christopher - 6’1 198 L - 37-4-2.42-.920
4. @ 76 - Perhonen, Samu - 6’4 172 L - 29-2-2.71-.922
5. @ 105 - Machovsky, Matej - 6’2 194 R - 23-1-2.90-.904
6. @ 110 - Michalek, Stephen - 6’2 183 L - 23-3.95-.918
7. @ 118 - Makarov, Andrey - 6’2 165 L - 27-2-3.37-.890
8. @ 124 - Galansky, Tadeas - 6’3 186 R - 17-1-2.89-.910
9. @ 128 - Kekki, Niklas - 5’10 154 L - 32-2.47-.926
10. @ 143 - Morrison, Michael - 6’0 175 R - 27-2-2.65-.912

I will do a forward list later on another thread.

Klefbom needs to be much higher. I wouldn't be shocked to see him be a top 20 pick in June.

Did the U-18's change this ranking at all?

The changes I wanted to make exactly. Hamilton over Murphy, Beaulieu over Siemens.
