Yeah I love the logic. I feel a bit for Brennan since he's certainly playing great, but it's not exactly the right fit here. Adding another offensive d isn't going to make us better defensively. He'll just have to wait for the right opportunity. That or give himself some nice trade value.
The logic on here alludes me about not calling him up. Yes you may not need another Offensive D man, but currently he may be your best. Send down an under performing one, like Gardner and exchange him or them with TJ. How the hell can a player who is performing at a record pace not get a look and what else does a player or any player need to do to get called up, Walk on water?

There is no question he should be up and there is no one who can argue against TJ right now.

If it's 30 days, I'd have no problem with calling him up and sitting our worst defenseman.

Gardiner-Phaneuf
Gunnarson - Rielly
Brennan - Ranger

I know it'll happen when we get Fraser back, but if our defense continues to be bad, I'd like the worst defenseman from the last game to get sat (if there's anybody that plays really bad) and put the 7th dman in. Right now we only have 6 dmen, so there's not a whole lot of pressure on the defense to give 100% and make smart plays (other than Rielly who knows he will get sent to juniors if he doesn't).

Youre gonna sit Franson ?

Should we call him up ? We aren't playing really well defensively, he has lit up the AHL 2 hat tricks in the last 2 games with the marlies total of 7 goals 3 assists in 3 games

might be a good call up just to see what he can do

I understand the want and desire to call up the guy but explain to me how being a PP specialist correlates to defensive play?

I suppose maybe Brennan could help our possession numbers which may help keep the puck out of our own zone but from the little bit I have seen of him he is not a defensive stalwart.

If we had 8 defensemen up... yep, for 1 game. He's played 2 good-great games, and 3 bad-horrible games IMO (especially last night, he was on for 4 goals against, and 3 of those were directly because of him.... he also forced Bernier to make the big stop on his cross-crease drive, and the play where Rielly "high-sticked" (looked like Hall hit it into his own face) Hall was because Franson coughed up the puck (pretty sure at least) so on the ice for 4 goals against, directly at fault for 3 (maybe 2 of them) and almost caused 2 more goals against.... Yes, I wouldn't be opposed to him sitting for a game and I believe he'd come back way better the next game.

Edit: To clarify/give reasoning... I believe our defense has been pretty bad in every game so far and could use a shake-up. I would not sit Phaneuf/Gardiner because they are playing good right now IMO. Ranger has been improving and I believe the more games he gets under the belt the better he'll do (sitting wouldn't help him), Gunnarson has been meh, but just had his best game and we need to hope he can get back to that minute-eating, not noticeable Dmen. This leaves Rielly and Franson, I believe the last 2-3 games Rielly has been much better than Franson and deserves to stay.... However, if management is not sure he'll stay after 9 games they can sit him instead and use the rest of the 9 games later, but I think he'll stay and deserves to be playing as he was one of our best 4 defenders the last 2-3 games.

Brennan is more offensively minded. Not sure how his hot offensive start makes him a good candidate for helping shore up the defensive issues the team is having right now. That said, two hat tricks in 3 games for a D man is pretty impressive.

It doesn't matter as a player who is on a historical trajectory deserves the call and you find a way. Its like the draft, you just take the best player regardless of needs.

We don't really know how his game will translate to the NHL, many before him played outerworldly in the A and when in the NHL it just never resulted like it did in the baby league...case in point Yannick Perrault.. Old leafers will remember him ;)

you have to Keep in mind that TO doesent have the cap room to just call Someone up. If someone is called up someone has to be sent down.

I think they have like 1.8 free because Fraser and Kuli are on Ltir (It might only be one of them, I forget). Correct me if I'm wrong.

With the window on Rielly's "tryout" coming to a close, the question will come up. "If not Rielly, then who?" Fraser will be coming back, does Ranger sit? Brennan is an intriguing option to take up the 6/7 position on D. While Rielly has impressed with his speed, poise etc. he was a minus 2 again on Saturday. His defensive play is not NHL calibre yet and someone like Brennan (low cap hit as well) might be a back up plan while Rielly matures one more year without eating into his ELC.

might as well play reilly at center if u send him back ........i have season tickets
to the windsor spitfires and i tell u right now ,,,,its a step backwards for reilly ...might be one player on each team in the league could match his pace, u make room somehow for reilly ,he belongs ...

We haven't even seen NHL quality hockey yet and it will take about another 10 games. Yes Rielly is ok, he has time to work out the kinks yet, and there are kicks. He can dazzle you but he can bury you with youthful mistakes. 7 even strength goals against on him vs 3 or so for other D. That's enough right there for me to say, hey you know what you're good but work on your game a bit more. It's only going to get harder when the other players are up to speed.

Give TJ a shot while he is waiver exempt.

I'm guessing he's streaky, found this from the hockey future's site

2010-11: Brennan got off to a slow start in his second season with Portland but a five-game stint at forward seemed to jump start him offensively. After scoring 4 goals with 4 assists during that November stretch, Brennan returned to the blue line and finished the season with 15 goals and 24 assists

that was a few seasons ago. He was pretty consistent the last two years, especially last year in rochester before going up to buffalo.

You're going to use a faceoff specialist who once scored 4 goals in a game for the leafs in his 14-year NHL career (516 pts in 859 games) as an example of a player who couldn't translate to the NHL? I'd think that Johnnly Pohl would be a more apt comparison.

As for Brennan, he's improved every season in the AHL he's played. If he can become a Perrault level player that would be impressive. The real question is, what's wrong with the guy that he was dropped by Florida of all teams, especially given he's capable of playing on defense and the wing.
