Like many other topics, this is just a light convo. We all know the NHL will never not have a winner. Their audience demands it. Too many people they are trying to convert to hockey fans in the United States don’t understand the concept of a tie. Many young Canadian hockey fans also don’t understand that concept becuase they are too young to remember when that used to be the case.

The NHL got rid of the tie like two years before Manchester United and Arsenal became household names. Especially with young, urban, multicultural people! Creating the shootout was incredibly short sighted, ignorant and tone def by the league.

They turned hockey, one of the world’s greatest, most unique and passionate sports, into a circus.

For no good reason!

American viewers couldn’t understand the concept of going home without a winner declared. It was instituted in an effort to alleviate that dull feeling.

As Canadians, we had understood the concept of a tie but no other major sports had ties as a game result. Only in rare instances in a football game did we see ties.

Baseball plays extra inning for hours. Basketball does the same. Football goes into OT but does have a time limit so there used to be the odd tie every few seasons.
