as everyone knows, this year has been extremely weak for top-end offence -- one 50 goal scorer, no 100 point scorer, maybe no one even reaching 90. but as far as i can tell, overall offence isn't down from years past -- it's actually fairly even with 2010-11. is the decline, across the board, explained by the decline in forwards' ice time? i haven't looked too deeply into this but, at a glance, there have been around 20-30 forwards with over 20 minutes per game every year going back to 09-10 -- this year there are only 8; in 09-10 there were over 60 players with 19 minutes -- this year there are around 40. is the "problem" with the game -- style of offence/entertainment value -- explained by this more even spread of ice time? look at stamkos for instance -- in his 60 goal year he was playing 22 minutes a game, now he's playing 19:26. crosby is down from 21:58 to 19:58 from last season. are all the top players' down years just due to lack of ice time?
