Things you thought about the league a couple years back that turned out wrong

For example I thought Miller was the best goaltender in the league who would get STL a cup.
I thought Ribs and Erat would put WSH over the hump.
I was 100 percent sure Baertschi would be way better than Gaudreau.
Who else?

I thought Grabovsky was another Suglobov/Gamache type of player that the Leafs acquired.

I thought the Leafs were going to take their play to the next level coming off that game 7 OT loss to the Bruins

I thought Crosby would always be a notch above Ovechkin after Ovechkin's "slump"

I thought Edmonton was going to get out of the basement for multiple years

Best of all: I remember telling my buddy that Burke was going to be fired before his team started taking shape, and then the results of his building and drafting would lead the Leafs to years of success. Well, Burke was fired, and the results of his building and drafting have lead the Leafs nowhere, and his drafting was a complete joke outside of a couple of players. :propeller

I remember hearing about the Oilers being an up-and-coming team since Sam Gagner's rookie year in the 07-08 season...

8 years later, and I'm still hearing the same thing.

I think that might be revisionist history a bit.

After all, they were expected to be a "4 second lines!" powerhouse in 06/07.

Cody Hodson would be captain and future Selke, Hart and Art Ross winner

Kassian would become the new Bertuzzi

Kesler would retire a Canuck

Chris Tanev was a waste of a roster spot and contract slot

Sedins being done after the 13/14 season

Steve Bernier was a future all star

Sharks winning the cup in 13/14 and becoming the next Detroit

Kadri becoming a big star by now

I thought Phaneuf would be the best Dmen in the NHL for the next few years

Ouch!! things seemed to have turned completely the other way around

I thought...
Brad Richards would lead the Rangers to a cup
Rick Nash would lead the Rangers to a cup
Martin St. Louis would lead the Rangers to a cup
Keith Yandle would lead the Rangers to a cup

You see the pattern here, right?

I mean maybe not to the full extent of some of those predictions, but I saw a lot coming from a lot of those players.

I thought...
Brad Richards would lead the Rangers to a cup
Rick Nash would lead the Rangers to a cup
Martin St. Louis would lead the Rangers to a cup
Keith Yandle would lead the Rangers to a cup

You see the pattern here, right?

Marian Gaborik would lead the Rangers to a cup...

I mean... they had Richards, Nash, Gaborik all on that 12/13 roster...

You know: Richards the franchise C from Tampa, the visionary and the playmaker; Nash the franchise LW from Columbus, the power forward and raw athlete; and Gaborik the franchise RW from Minnesota, the naturally gifted offensive menace.

How did they not win everything!?

Back in 2010 I thought the Oilers would go on a deep playoff run in the 2014-2015 season.

Speaking of Erat, I thought the Forsberg trade wasn't that bad at the time, because Erat was likely Forsberg's ceiling.

- Iginla would retire a Flame
- Kipper would have a few more seasons in him
- Baertschi would become what Gaudreau became
- Mason Raymond was great signing
- Ryan Getzlaf would win the Art Ross and the Ducks would win the Presidents Trophy this year (Would make it to SCF, but lose to TB)
- Flames would finish last in the Pacific last year
- Flames will finish fourth in the Pacific this year (behind 1.ANA 2. LA 3. SJ, looks like they will finish bottom 2)
- Marko Dano would be doing what Panarin is doing right now
- Flames losing out on Brad Richards was a disaster
- Cory Conacher trade was an absolute steal by Ottawa
- Jonathan Bernier would be a top 2 Canadian goalie by now
- Sedins were finally done terrorizing the Pacific after 13-14

I thought the Blackhawks would be in salary cap hell. Ok I didn't think that but was told that every year the last 5 seasons.

They have been, to some degree. They lost Niemi, Byfuglien, Ladd, Saad, Sharp, and Oduya due to cap issues; you could practically form the core of an NHL team with those guys. They've just had good enough drafting to help balance, and struck the lottery with the Panarin signing and the Keith contract.

Players who were left unsigned/traded the season after the Hawks won the cup

Ladd-Vermette-Byfuglien*
Saad-Richards-Stallberg
Sharp-Bolland-Versteeg
Frolik-Madden-Piri
Burrish

Leddy-Byfuglien
Johns-Oduya
Pailotta-Sopel
Included Leddy since even though he was traded in the beginning of the 2015 season the cap forced his way out and i got sick of trying to find a 6th defensemen at this point

Niemi
Emery/Raanta

Defense is just LOL Forwards are pretty decent even though i wouldn't be proud of that center depth but the LW's are really good and we need a good LW outside of Panarin badly right now

I thought Brodeur would retire gracefully, and that both he and Lou would retire as Devils.

I thought that the Crosby/Malkin duo would regularly be in the ECFs, at least.
