We are 5th last in the league in penalty killing with a bad 73% right now. Slightly ahead of teams like Montreal and Arizona.

Anybody else find that concerning?

How do we get better?
I'm not positive it is a personnel issue. We have plenty of players who should be able to PK effectively. I really think it is a system issue and is on Pratt to fix. For one, I find it too passive. Occasionally we will pressure the point and we seem to be more effective at clearing when we do so. But our players seem to just get glued to the ice and as a results seems are easier to find and our PK is easier to score on. I'm not and don't pretend to be an X's and O's hockey guy...just a fan who thought this would be a really interesting discussion to have. What are your thoughts RIAL?

Two of their main PK’ing forwards are god awful (Compher/Helm), and Jost is..Jost. And not one PK’ing forward could win a FO if their life depended on it.

And we haven’t even addressed the Johnson’s and Kuemper.

So personal are a huge issue.

Yep, Our PK has never been particularly good under Bednar. Think the best we ever finished for a full season was like league average, 15th or something.

Our PK struggles have more to do with a system that just doesn't work. That said, adding one PK specialist and someone who can win a faceoff on the PK would certainly help get it back probably to league average at least.

Replace Jost with said player and the PK will improve.

Has Quick signaled he'd like to be dealt to a contender? What would the cost difference be between Quick and Fleury considering the Flower is UFA and Quick has a year left.

2017-18 - 5th (83.3%)
2018-19 - 25th (78.7%)
2019-20 - 13th (81.4%)
2020-21 - 8th (83.1%)
Current - 28th (73.1%)

I think inconsistent is more apt, but we have had 2 seasons where our PK was in the top 10. I do think our PK system is greatly influenced by the dman's size and willingness to block shots. I can't recall one instance of our forwards getting into lanes to block shots this season. If we want our PK to improve (with the current system), we need another forward and defenseman who will lay out his body to block a shot.

Interesting. Still within a few percentage points every year. Last year it clearly benefited from Vezina caliber goaltending.

I think our PK system is built in a way to dare the shooter to take a shot. Often times our forwards don't try and get in the shooting lane but instead the passing lane.

They challenge the shooter to take a shot and either the Dmen get into good position to block it, or they rely on the goalie to make the first save and for our guys to get to rebounds first.

Part of the problem this year though IMO has been that A) Darcy gets beat clean on shots more frequently the Grubauer did. Grubauer had his high glove issues just like Kuemper has his High blocker, but I think overall Gruby was better at the initial saves. B) EJ and JJ being our primary PKers isn't great because neither guy is all that mobile and so they get beat to loose pucks pretty frequently. It's why Bednar is using Toews/Makar/Byram more lately on the PK. They can get to loose pucks better.

Its the Avs biggest concern upto this point in the season. Its both personnel and strategy. The biggest issue is Jost, Helm and Compher all suck and neither one of them can win a draw ever. You bring in a PK specialist or at the very least someone who is above 55% on the dots and you will see the PK improve. Maybe also bring in another dman who has longer arms and legs than Sam Girard.

Speaking of Jost, considering how much abuse he takes you would think he'd be fine blocking a few shots on the PK - he has more durability than the rest of the team combined.

Jost made out of adamantium. Its too bad he has no talent. A guy whose that durable with some skill is useful in this league. Andrew Cogliano made a career out of it.

For everyone complaining about SH faceoffs. You do realize that the Avs are top 10 in faceoff % while on the PK, right?

Kind of sucks the team has to travel after the game tonight to play the divison leaders on a back to back. Hopefully they cant shut it down early and save their legs for the Preds.

Will be curious to see if Bednar goes with Francouz tonight and Kuemper tomorrow or if he'll try to let Kuemper rebound against a bottom team and see if Francouz gives them a better shot against Nashville.

Considering what Bednar said about the Kuemper pull I think he gives him the more difficult matchup. Frankie plays tonight.
