It’s always fun watching a lot of hockey fans lose their minds when Jonathan Toews is ranked highly by those that make a living out of the game, players, coaches, GM’s etc. There are two things that are particularly amusing:

1.) Many people actually, really, truly believe that they know more about the sport then the people making a living from the game

2.) Rather than come up with some angle or advanced stat to support this “appeal to the layman†or “appeal to the ignorant†they instead bring nothing more than the most simplistic of statistics: goals, assists and points, the 50% of the game that is about generating goals, but entirely ignoring the other 50% of the game, the prevention of goals.

Interesting that one would attempt to take on the experts by removing half of the game from consideration.

There are very tangible reasons why Jonathan Toews is regarded so highly by the hockey professionals, but these attributes will remain “intangible†to those who only understand the game to the extent of goals, assists and points (and mostly in the regular season, as many tune out once their teams have missed or been elimated from the playoffs) and who give nothing more than lip service to the other aspects of the game.

Before getting into the more tangible areas of scoring and goal prevention, the quality of competition will be given initial consideration. It is easier to put up good numbers playing against Darren Helm rather than Pavel Datsyuk.

The formula is simple. From the following website, a forward’s quality of competition is ranked, in this case, for the 2014-15 season (minimum 30 games):

http://www.behindthenet.ca/nhl_stat...+RW&f7=30-&c=0+1+3+5+4+6+7+11+12+13+14+15+16#

This is repeated for each of the past five seasons, with the shortened 2012-13 season having a 20-game minimum.

In the case of Toews, his quality of competition in each of the past five seasons were ranked as 7th, 18th, 90th, 48th, and 173rd. Adding up these numbers brings a total of 336, dividing it by the five seasons yields an average number of 67.20. Very simple.

I’ve used the past five seasons for all statistical comparisons because I didn’t want to pad Toews’ numbers. Going back six years would include the 2010 Cup season. A shorter timeframe would bring an over-weighting of the past three successful seasons of two Cups and a Western Conference Final. Five years brings Toews back to the pack so to speak, removing the 2010 championship season from his statistics but including the 1st-round exit seasons of 2011 and 2012.

I also like the fairness of the quality-of-competition metric. Remember when Ovechkin played in a division that included no other playoff teams except for his Capitals? That gets reflected in his quality of competition. Remember when the Western Conference was dominating the Eastern Conference in head-to-head matchups? That gets reflected in the quality of competition. Western players were strengthening their metrics. Eastern players were weakening theirs. The result was that the players in the West were statistically recognized for facing better competition compared to their Eastern peers over the course of an entire season, as it should’ve been.

The quality of competition chart over the past five years includes Toews and the other top centers over that timespan, plus teammates Kane and Hossa, plus winger Ovechkin. Younger centers like Seguin haven’t been around long enough in top-line roles to be included in a five-year comparison:
Note that the toughest matchups went to the “two-way forwards†(Joe Thornton excepted) while the players thought to be the offensive stars of the league got the softest matchups.

Looking at this quality of competition chart may cause one to re-think what the conventional definition of a “two-way†player is. It may have been thought of as a way to recognize defensive play so that the gap between the “two-way player†and the “true, offensive superstar†was narrowed. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink, Ovy and Stamkos are superior, but we’ll give some credit to Toews and Kopy and Dats for playing some defence.

In looking at this chart, it looks like the offensive numbers of the stars are coming from a conscious effort by their coaches to match them against inferior competition. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but one has to wonder how the offensive numbers would compare if say Kopitar was getting soft minutes while say Stamkos got more difficult matchups.

To what degree are the better numbers a result of matchups rather than ability?

The coaches and the players who manage and play the game shift-by-shift would notice these nuances, but many fans watch and celebrate the goals without noticing or giving a second thought as to who is on the ice for the other team when these events are taking place.

In this debate where a contingent of laymen insist that they understand the game better than the professionals who make a living from it, there seems to be a different mathematical model.

Evgeni Malkin is on the ice for every goal in a 4-5 loss, with a goal and three assists
Jonathan Toews is on the ice for every goal in a 3-1 win, with a goal and an assist

In the layman’s math, 4 is better than 2. Malkin had four points while Toews had two, therefore Malkin had the better game.

With hockey people, the 5 and the 1 in the goals against column are also considered. 3 is better than 4 if you only gave up 1 in the process of scoring 3 as opposed to giving up 5 in the process of scoring 4. Toews had the better game.

While the laymen think of only scoring goals, hockey people think of scoring goals in tandem with preventing goals, which is why Toews is rated more highly by professionals than by laymen:

What could be more tangible? Toews has the best goal-differential over the past five seasons at even-strength, a feat further punctuated by the more difficult quality of competition that he sees compared to his most of his peers.

Now we know what’s coming. Thanks to the ‘Hawks abysmal power-play, we know that the gap is going to narrow once the power-play production of the other players enters the equation. How does a championship team have a PP ranked 20th, 10th, 19, and 26th over the past four seasons?

When an NHL coach like Tortorella talks about wanting to have Toews on his team, it’s likely with the knowledge that he would have the top even-strength forward in the league with a crack at fixing a power-play that is chronically under-achieving.

So what is the final tally when combining even-strength and power-play goal differential?

Without having to resort to any “intangibles†arguments, Jonathan Toews sits 3rd in the NHL in goal-differential over the past five NHL seasons, and that’s with the Achilles heel that is the ‘Hawks power-play. The onus would be placed on advocates of other players to point to things beyond the raw numbers to state their case.

Just for fun, I’ve taken the metrics from the first two posts and applied them to the gold standard of two-way forwards and offensive forwards from 2007-12:

Kudos to Zetterberg for the hard matchups all of the time. No doubt it costs him offensive numbers, but he has his Conn Smythe Trophy in recognition of his greatness.

If we add 20% more ice-time to Datsyuk to bring him even with Ovechkin, a 20% bump in his goal-differential would exceed Ovechkin’s.

Jamie Benn has been brought up a lot recently, and one discussion on these boards tried to cherry-pick Benn’s numbers compared to Toews – over the past two years which would include Benn’s Art Ross season and the two most difficult quality-of-competition seasons for Toews. Using these same metrics:

The following chart is a list of matchups from last season, Toews versus the top centers/lines in the league. These matchups can be derived from:

http://www.puckalytics.com/superwowy.html

One fallacy among many that have been put forth by Toews’ detractors is the reliance on teammates like Duncan Keith (as if great teams didn’t have more than one great player) without recognizing that Keith’s beast-mode in the playoffs is not always present in the regular season:

http://stats.hockeyanalysis.com/showplayer.php?pid=649&withagainst=true&season=2010-15&sit=5v5

I’ll again take the viewpoint of a player, or a coach or a General Manager who is trying to figure out how to win games and ultimately championships.

By now we know the drill in Chicago. Toews against top lines, Kane getting favourable matchups against lesser competition, Toews/Kane together as a nuclear option.

The result from these matchups is a lot of low-scoring games for Toews and his competition. This is a winning formula for Chicago and the professionals recognize this, but the laymen say, “where are the points?â€

Given Toews’ ice-time, this is the equivalent to 22 games of even-strength hockey. The best players in the game matched up against him were on the ice for 11 goals for while Toews was on the ice for 14 goals for. That’s not to say that they scored 11 points, but that they were on the ice for 11 goals for. Only three players on the ice get points, two do not.

The best players in the game, in their matchups versus Toews generated 8 or 9 even-strength points in 22 games worth of ice-time. Coupling that with even the best power-play production would mean that the best players are generating 60-something points against Toews over the course of an entire season.

Somebody might be winning a scoring title with 90 or 100 points, but it’s not coming against Toews, and to extrapolate that further, that kind of production is not being generated in matchups against the best players very often, whichever team they may play for.

What the laymen seem to get excited about is the 3-point games players score against Carolina or the Leafs, but the people who make a living from the game don’t place a lot of emphasis on it. It’s not going to help you come playoff time. Speaking of playoffs…………….

Once the regular season is over, almost half of the teams are eliminated from playoff participation.
Not surprisingly, a player’s offensive production in the playoffs usually declines as the 14 worst teams against whom you can pad your offensive numbers are gone.

And of course the other big difference is that you’re not just playing a team on a one-and-done basis, as you do in the regular season, but you see the same ugly faces and bad breath night after night, for at least four games and as much as seven. This is where you probe and assess your opposition, make adjustments, re-adjustments, and try to find a way to win the battle that is played at a far higher level of intensity than the regular season.

The reduction in points-per-game production in the playoffs compared to the regular season is the same for Kane and Toews as it is for most players, most noticeably in the first four games of a series:

KANE AND TOEWS PLAYOFF SCORING GAMES 1 THRU 4
PLAYER|GP|GOALS|ASST|PTS|PLUS|PPG|
KANE|79|26|40|66|10|0.835||
TOEWS|80|22|40|62|5|0.775||
But then come games 5, 6 and 7, after all the probing, after all of the assessments and adjustments, and when the pressure is at it’s peak:

KANE AND TOEWS PLAYOFF SCORING GAMES 5, 6, 7
PLAYER|GP|GOALS|ASST|PTS|PLUS|PPG|

KANE|37|22|26|48|18|1.297||
TOEWS|37|17|23|40|12|1.081||
Now we take all of those great players that we compared regular season numbers with, to see how they perform come crunch time in the playoffs:

PLAYOFF PRODUCTION GAMES 5, 6, 7 SINCE LOCKOUT
PLAYER|GAMES|GOALS|ASST|PTS|PLUS|PPG|NOTES|
KANE|37|22|26|48|18|1.297||
TOEWS|37|17|23|40|12|1.081||
ZETTERBERG|33|15|25|40|15|1.212||
HOSSA|41|13|20|33|11|0.805|PIT., DET., & CHI.|

CROSBY|29|8|18|26|-1|0.897|1ST 10 GMS: 5-9-14 +4|
J. WILLIAMS|31|12|14|26|10|0.839|â€Mr. Game Sevenâ€|
KREJCI|30|7|18|25|8|0.833|Bergeron for D, Krejci for O.|
OVECHKIN|28|14|10|24|2|0.857|9-5-14 in first 9 games|
GIROUX|17|6|16|22|5|1.294|Great PPG over fewer games|
KOPITAR|22|8|13|21|10|0.955||
THORNTON|29|6|13|19|-10|0.655||
GETZLAF|25|6|12|18|-8|0.720||
H. SEDIN|22|3|14|17|-16|0.773|Great reg. seasons undermined|
BACKSTROM|28|4|11|15|2|0.536|Playing with Ovechkin???|
BERGERON|30|4|10|14|8|0.467|Great D, but enough offence?|
STAMKOS|16|6|6|12|2|0.750|1st overall, 2008|
TAVARES|5|2|2|4|-2|0.800|1st overall, 2009|
You have the goal-differential leader at even-strength in the NHL over the past five seasons, playing against stiff competition to boot, Top 3 if power-plays are included, the top scoring duo in the clutch along with Kane come playoff time, three Stanley Cups and if the ‘Hawks could ever fix their power-play, look out.

And we haven’t even discussed intangibles yet……..

Fantastic read and excellent research. Wonder what percentage of points of Giroux's came from that one series

This was awesome, lots of props to you for all the work and research. Solidifies what all us Hawks fans already know from watching every game but it's still awesome to see all the raw numbers and how good The Captain really is.

P.S. This gave me even more respect for Zetterberg, dudes a beast.

A stat boost I noticed Toews had pretty high on, at least compared to some guys like Kopitar/Bergeron that looks up when you think of his preference and shows up in stats is his goals in "close" data situations.

Thanks everybody.

Add Drew Doughty who agrees about Toews being a top 3 player in the world.

But I mean what does he know...

Appeal to authority.

Am I doing this right lol.

Agree on Zetterberg. Tough competition and a playoff beast.

There’s nothing wrong with deploying offensive players on advantageous matchups, it’s just that many casual fans think that all offence is created equally when the quality of competition clearly shows an understandable co-relation between rising offence coupled with soft matchups.

I prefer the two-way players come crunch time.

The Wings had Zett-Dats-Lidstrom and deployed them like the ‘Hawks deploy Toews-Kane-Keith, but it looks like Zetterberg was given the tougher matchups more often when he and Datsyuk were split up.

It seems to be the most successful formula since the lockout, followed by all of the teams that have gone to the Finals multiple times since then.

Fantastic read and excellent research. Wonder what percentage of points of Giroux's came from that one series

That crazy series against the Penguins saw Giroux have a six-point game in Game 2, and 10 points in the first four games. That series went six games, and in the pivotal games 5 and 6 Giroux tallied four points .

In doing this research, Giroux looks good. He took on a good quality of competition before Couturier arrived, and the design is now to have Couts take the harder matchups to maximize Giroux’s offence. When Mike Richards was in Cout’s role during the 2010 run to the Finals, Giroux had a productive playoff and he has continued to produce offence without a lot of support from the back-end. I would group him with Tavares in that there isn’t a lot of help in goal production and goal prevention compared to what some of his peers have to work with.

In looking at playoff crunch time, a few other things stood out.

Joe Thornton’s time in Boston saw him in 10 playoff games 5, 6 and 7. In those 10 games he produced three points and was a minus 8. The Bruins made that controversial trade but his performances in big playoff games in San Jose continue to leave a lot to be desired.

The meltdown in Pittsburgh is fascinating. Like the ‘Hawks, the Pens had playoff success when Crosby and Malkin were on their entry-level contracts. They haven’t been back to the Finals since then.

Not only have their numbers in Games 5, 6 and 7 deteriorated, but they have been spared further damage when both were shutout in the Boston sweep, thus no game 5, 6, or 7 to weaken their numbers, and the recent fizzle against the Rangers only produced one game for this metric as they were gone in five games.

A stat boost I noticed Toews had pretty high on, at least compared to some guys like Kopitar/Bergeron that looks up when you think of his preference and shows up in stats is his goals in "close" data situations.

You know if you mine the data you’re going to find gold. Too many championships, too many clutch goals, too many people in the business giving him the highest accolades. This is just the most tangible stuff........

I always enjoy your posts. Researched and well laid out. You, Chelios and few others are the saving grace of the ****fest Toews threads that regularly happen on the main boards.

Some interesting stats for sure, but if there was ever a player whose game was defined by intangibles it's Toews. Even when he has an off day, he's better than a large percentage of top line players because of has the unique combination of a high hockey IQ, elite skills offensively and defensively, a great attitude and the determination to succeed that rises to the occasion. Throw the stats sheet away and watch him play.

IMO, he's the best leader in sports, period!

Consider this data as the anti-dote to all the nonsense posted on the main boards, and not just about Toews.

The next time you read nonsense like "it's a forwards job to score goals" or "anyone can be taught to play defence" or someone mentions Toews' 3 goals in the 2013 playoffs without offering an explanation as to how the opposition still managed to get out-scored by nine goals at even-strength while he was on the ice, refer to these charts, measure that player's assets (goals for) versus his liabilities (goals against), check his quality of competition and his big-game performance........and laugh at everything that is being missed by the armchair experts.

JT & Kane are the best players in the league. They keep showing it year after year especially when it matters most and that is in the playoffs. End of discussion. This thread is just a tool to further prove that JT is extremely under rated.

You should take this to the main boards. Unless it's already there, then I am sorry. Have been so busy with finals, haven't had a lot of time to check. Wonder how it would go over there.
