As a small debate began in the draft thread, I pondered our goaltending situation and how we got to where we are today.
When the calendar turned to 2014, Devan Dubnyk and Jason Labarbera were our goalies as I recall. Dubnyk was playing very poor, and it was evident that his days were numbered. This is our goaltending transaction history since then(I hope I’m not missing anything)
Traded Devan Dubnyk for Matt Hendricks
Traded a 2014 3rd for Ben Scrivens
Traded a 2015 3rd and 2014 5th for Victor Fasth
Traded a 2015 2nd and 3rd for Cam Talbot and a 2015 7th(Ziyat Paigin)
Traded 2017 3rd and 5th for Stuart Skinner
Traded Ben Scrivens for Zack Kassian
Traded 2018 4th for Al Montoya
Traded 2018 3rd and 5th for Olivier Rodrigue
Traded 2019 5th for Hayden Hawkey
We also signed Mikko Koskinen and Shane Starrett as Free Agents.
Draft
2014 4th - Zach Nagelvoort
2014 7th - Keven Bouchard
2015 7th - Miroslav Svoboda
2016 5th - Dylan Wells
2017 3rd - Stuart Skinner
2018 2nd - Olivier Rodrigue
What do we have to show for it going into next year?
Mikko Koskinen on a 3 year $4.6 million per contract who hasn’t shown he is a starting goalie in the league yet.
Shane Starrett is having a solid season in the AHL, but has never played a game in the NHL. Wells and Skinner have been ok in their pro debuts, but have a long ways to go before being NHL ready.
Hawkey is solid in college, but who knows if he will sign. Rodrigue I believe has one more year in junior.
In a nutshell, we traded Devan Dubnyk(NHL caliber starting goalie), a 2nd round pick, 5 3rd round picks, two 4th round pick, and 4 5th round picks, and a 7th round pick for one solid, but unsigned college goalie, three solid prospects, but far from assured of anything yet and Zack Kassian. The two most promising goalies we have were signed as FA’s, and one is way overpaid and pretty much guaranteed the starting gig next year with under 40 games NHL experience....
I sure hope the return for Cam Talbot makes up for this. Lol
I’m going to go throw up now.
