I think someone else has mentioned this concept (Crafton?) before and I always thought it was a good idea, so why not start one up during the offseason doldrums?

To begin, let me offer this nifty SB Nation piece I saw on Puck Daddy's headline roundup today. A light read on the origins of the old Pittsburgh Pirates NHL team and how they helped contribute to the modernization of hockey: http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/2014/8/...pirates-history-line-changes-quakers-penguins

Feel free to supply more links or personal recollections about the Penguins or the Pittsburgh hockey scene in general (maybe you were embarrassed by Ryan Malone, R.J. Umberger, or Brandon Saad in high school). Maybe share some photos or video, too.

My only real personal Penguins story is my dad taking a very young me to the Hartford Civic Center to watch Mario Lemieux demolish the Whalers. Unfortunately I was so disturbed by the noise (particularly the buzzer) that I didn't spend a whole lot of time watching the game. Give me a break, I was like four.

Did you know Pittsburgh had the first arena with an artificial ice surface in North America? The Casino at Schenley Park hosted the city's first hockey game on December 30, 1895.... and burned down only a year later after an explosion caused by an ammonia leak. Being severely underinsured the arena was never rebuilt, and instead replaced with a former trolley barn renamed Duquesne Gardens.

And the first two (former) Penguins I ever saw live were Mike Bullard and Scott Young, both playing for Landshut in 1995. Bullard had a long career as a high-scoring center in Germany. Young was only there because of the lockout, and he scored 7 goals in 5 games. I remember the guy being ridiculously fast.
