Speaking of 'Honest Ovi':

NEW YORK – Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin, New York Islanders center John Tavares and Boston Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask have been named the NHL's "Three Stars" for the month of January.

FIRST STAR – ALEX OVECHKIN, LW, WASHINGTON CAPITALS

Ovechkin led all players with 12 goals, six power-play markers and 59 shots on goal to power the Capitals (25-15-10, 60 points) to a 7-3-3 January and the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. He registered points in nine of 13 contests (12-3—15), highlighted by yada yada yada. The 29-year-old Moscow, Russia, native leads the NHL with 31 goals, 14 power-play markers, six game-winning goals (tied) and 248 shots on goal in 50 appearances this season. He is the fifth player in NHL history to record at least 30 goals in each of his first 10 seasons, joining Mike Gartner (15), Wayne Gretzky (13), Mike Bossy (10) and Jari Kurri (10).

Meanwhile, the Leafs were 1-11-1 in January, with a total of 16 goals.

Congrats to TO for scoring more goals than Ovechkin :handclap:

Just listened to the interview Dallas Eakins gave on the TSN Analytics podcast. Really liked what I heard there. Worth your time IMO.

Care to give a brief summary of what Eakins said?

He said he developed great chemistry with Tyler Dellow. Both he and Tyler learned a lot in this short amount of time. Said that once Tyler was hired by the Oilers he received an email from someone in the media asking why they hired that *****. Was very enthusiastic about analytics. Said for him there's no such thing as analytics in a way. If you're willing to accept that goals, assists, standings points matter (like you need x amount of points to make the playoffs). No reason why you shouldn't pay attention to other numbers that are even more telling about your team. Said numbers aren't the end-all and be-all but clearly have their place in the league. Said he wanted to work face-to-face with Dellow. Didn't want him to only work with the assistants or in some office miles away.

He said they worked on the numbers for the PP and that they were on to something with the Oilers. Said next place he goes he'll have a much better idea of where he wants to take the team and in a way the Oilers will have been a bit of an experiment. Spoke about Yakupov. Said the kid is really dedicated to becoming a good player. Nail listening a bit too much to his own entourage kind of muddies the water though. Too much is put on him being a 1st overall pick and how he compares to players like Stamkos and who have you. No doubt in his mind Yak can become a good player in this league.

Isn't looking for an assistant coaching job. Basically said it was in his DNA to be a head coach. He also said they had a 3-year plan with MacT that in his 3rd year they thought they'd be a playoffs team or close to. Personnel isn't there for now. There's only so much you can do when you don't have a good goalie and a true #1 defenseman. Center position wasn't strong enough either.

Was very enthusiastic about the numbers and the deeper analysis that they were working on. What I can give you quickly off the top of my head.
