Likeliest playoff (currently) targets to beat
  • Florida: 47GP, 57 Points --> On pace for 99 points
  • Columbus: 49GP, 58 points --> On pace for 97 points
  • Philly: 49GP, 58 points --> On pace for 97 points
Bubble Teams:
  • Carolina: 48GP, 57 points --> On pace for 97 points
  • Toronto: 49GP, 57 points --> On pace for 95 points

Montreal Canadiens: 50GP, 51 points --> On pace for 83-84 points
Current Record: 22-21-7; On pace for [around]: 38-36-8
Overall Record needed to make playoffs (roughly): 45-30-7

Which equates to a record, from now on, needed to beat current pace of current playoff and bubble teams:
23-9-0 or a winning percentage of 72%

However, the Habs have 2 to 6 fewer RW than the current and bubble teams. Therefore, they need an additional point of that pace, meaning a record of 23-8-1 (73-74%) from now on.

This is all assuming the current pace of playoff and bubble teams is maintained.

I will continuously update this thread until we either qualify for the playoffs or get eliminated. This is not a positive or negative thread. Just an outlook of our position in the playoff picture.

Ideal Outcomes:
Jan 21

  • Carolina loses to WPJ [0:0]
  • Florida loses to CHI [0:0]
--> Now 8 points behind the last WC team.

Lets say they somehow go 21-9-2 the rest of the year. That still likely puts them out of a playoff spot.

If they manage something incredible like 24-7-1, they'd hit 100 points. However, there's enough teams ahead of us that even with an ungodly run like that they're still unlikely to make it.

Carolina goes 19-10-5 --> 100 points.
Toronto goes 19-9-5 --> 100 points
Columbus goes 20-11-2 --> 100 points
Philly goes 19-10-4 --> 100 points
Florida goes 19-11-5 --> 100 points

Those are all far more likely than us going 24-7-1. With the exception of Columbus I don't think any of those teams are going to stop winning. I haven't given up faith that this can be a good team, but I don't think playoffs are really in our sight this year.

yeah i personally agree but its just an outlook thread until we get eliminated or qualify. Its basically like a calculator to check what needs to be done from that day on.

Where's the official push thread for the Stanley Cup?

That's the tank/rebuild thread.

Making the playoffs without making major moves (which Bergevin has been confirmed to not be seeking; Price, Weber, Tatar, Petry, Domi out of the question) will not get this team far. The D will get eaten alive in the playoffs.

If we’re healthy and in the mix come TDL, we can’t just tank. Maybe sell some minor pieces like Thompson/Weal etc, but our roster when healthy looks pretty damn good with a motivated Kovalchuk

Looks a lot like last year but with a steeper hill to climb. We're gonna need help and lots of it from the teams ahead of us. I say the push seems fruitless but, like the coach said: "It's not over till it's over."

Pretty much, but I would argue all the Atlantic games, minus the Bruins, are must wins as those are 4-pointers.

Bad result: Car won. This may open the door to catch up on the NYI but not very likely at this point.

Leafs were dreadful last night including Andersen. If they don't get some bodies back on the blueline after the break, could be tough for them.

Edit: On the flipside, Florida is getting into a groove and now Bobrosky is back.

5 games left against those two teams.

That would be almost a consolation prize.

Edit: It's tough to miss the playoffs but it's brutal to get knocked out in the last game of the season. Hard to forget.
