Since we all know the season is over (not-so-serious 
), I believe it is time to begin discussion of the offseason.
Why now, you ask? Simple- this offseason is going to be critical to the success of this team in the immediate and near future. The main core of our team- E. Staal and Semin- have a couple of years left before they start to decline seriously in productivity before the wave of the future that is J. Staal/Skinner/Lindholm/Faulk/Murphy replace them permanently as our franchise centerpieces.
If you have been paying acute attention to my posting history, you will know that I am of the opinion that the core the Hurricanes' has- both now and for the future- is good enough to make the playoffs. Maybe do some damage as well. What I think is the problem is what is quite possibly the worst bottom 6 crop of forwards in the NHL and lack of depth on defense.
Hence, why this offseason is so important. Over the past three offseasons, JR has steadily accumulated top tier talent, through draft (Skinner), trade (J. Staal) or free agency (Semin). Now, we need depth. We desperately need depth. We need cheap depth that can be counted on to produce more than once in a blue moon. Nathan Gerbe was a good start- now we need 5 more of him. Can JR get it done???
