The NFL Network is currently airing a series that breaks down the top 100 players in NFL history by position. I'd like to do something similar here for the NHL. We will select our 100 players by position, which will give us 5 full 20 man rosters. The breakdown will be as follows: 20 LW, 20 C, 20 RW, 30 D, 10 G.

We will start with LW...

Feel free to comment with who you would like to be added to the next poll. Only 20 options will be listed at a time for left wing

Each poll will run for a maximum of 48 hours but if there is a clear and decisive leading choice before then, I will start the next poll

I am staying true to positions so no C's moving to wing and in a case like Ovechkin, a player who has spent the majority of his career at more than one position, his more prominent position will be utilized

Mahovlich, 6 Cups and almost a PPG over his career (57-74).... I dont see how Robitaille has the better career

add Gainey, Zetterberg

Accidentally submitted the thread before I finished making it so not all the stats made it into the poll. Here's the full list here:

Luc Robitaille (1431 GP - 668 G - 726 A - 1394 P) - 1x SC

Brendan Shanahan (1524 GP - 656 G - 698 A - 1354 P) - 3x SC
Dave Andreychuk (1639 GP - 640 G - 698 A - 1338 P) - 1x SC
Frank Mahovlich - (1181 GP - 583 G - 570 A - 1103 P) - 6x SC

Keith Tkachuk (1201 GP - 538 G - 527 A - 1065 P) - 1x MR
Michel Goulet (1089 GP - 548 G - 604 A - 1152 P)
Daniel Sedin (1306 GP - 393 G - 648 A - 1041 P) - 1x AR, 1x TL
Paul Kariya (989 GP - 402 G - 587 A - 989 P)
Markus Naslund (1117 GP - 395 G - 474 A - 869 P) - 1x TL

Going with the Big M here but wow adding Gainey as one of the top 26 or 27 LWers of all time really?

I personally put a lot of value in defensive forwards, as theyre always an integral part in winning championships. Gainey was probably the best ever.

When talking about the best LWers in NHL history to suggest that a specialist would be one of the best 25ish LWers of all time would be putting way too much premium over offense which is more impactful and less plentiful than a specialist forwards even if you consider him the best of all time.

Simply put Gainey won 6 SC more because the teams he was one and other player performances, if he had been drafted and played for any other team this wouldn't even be a discussion and he wouldn't be in the HHOF.

possibly, but he wasnt just a passenger by any means, he won a CS and 4 Selkes in a row! Something has to be said about the "greatest" defensive forward of all-time.... that alone to me is worth a lot more than just a steady point producer over 1000+ games in a high scoring era. These guys get in the HOF for a reason over guys like... Brian Bellows.

The Conn Smythe was pretty much a team situation and a reputation one as well.

Lemaire, who was also very good defensively and was arguably even more worthy of the CS that year as was Robinson.

The fact of the matter was that the Habs had 10 players in those playoffs that scored at a full season 50+ point pace and that's why they won the SC.

Gainey's CS certainly isn't one of the stronger CS in history.

Again if Gainey played for say the Sabers and craig Ramsay for the Habs this wouldn't even be a discussion.

Even if you say that Gainey is the best defensive player of all time (which is extremely debatable but let's pretend that's a fact) in his peak he is still only 135th and 117th in ES scoring in the NHL

That is not a top 25ish LWer of all time plain and simple.
