After Ronnie James Dio quit the band to join Black Sabbath as a response to Ritchie Blackmore giving keyboard player David Stone and bassist Bob Daisley the boot, with Daisley joining up with Ozzy and Stone becoming the keyboard player for Max Webster, the band Rainbow were in an odd position after a decent chunk of their band essentially left following the release of Long Live Rock 'n' Roll in '78. Blackmore replaced Daisley pretty quickly, calling upon former Deep Purple bassist Ronnie Glover to join the band in January of '79 and then recruiting keyboardist Don Airey on a suggestion from drummer Cozy Powell soon after. All that was left was to find a singer, which...how hard could that be? :sarcasm: In the end, Blackmore had two options: former Fable and Trapeze frontman Peter Goalby or his former bandmate from Deep Purple in Ian Gillan. That was until Blackmore took a flyer on a name put forward by Ronnie Glover in former pop singer Graham Bonnett, who was doing advert jingles in the UK after his career originally fizzled out in '69 and had only one actual album release in the past ten years. Once Bonnett sessioned with Blackmore and Powell, he was hired on the spot. The album that came out of this new line up? Arguably Rainbow's most commercially friendly release to date in 1979's Down to Earth, which features the band's first hit single "Since You've Been Gone." But don't think that this grab for commercial success means the tunes didn't come along for the ride. Tracks like Eyes of the World, Lost in Hollywood, Love's No Friend, and Danger Zone are just some of the absolute bangers on this album. A big part of this comes from Bonnett's out of nowhere vocal performance on this album, singing with an amazing range and snarl that one would expect from Judas Priest's Rob Halford. He passed the test with flying colors on this album. Powell and Blackmore sound tight as ever on the drums and guitar respectively, with Glover doing his job maintaining rhythm on bass and Airey putting in some good work on the keys. What should've been a step back for a band rebuilding itself ended up becoming a massive step forward and I can't recommend this album enough. Sadly...this incarnation of the band wasn't built to last. Cozy Powell and Graham Bonnet left together after this album as part of Bonnett's solo band with the latter being rejuvinated career wise from this album. They then later joined the Michael Schenker Group and after that, Bonnnett created another excellent band by the name of Alcatrazz. The group featured Bonnett, former Alice Cooper drummer Jan Uneva, Gary Shea and Jimmy Waldo from the band New England, and a Swedish prodigy on guitar you may have heard of in Yngwie Malmsteen.
