Opening bass line from Livin on A Prayer isn't mind blowing but as non vocal hooks go everyone knows what's coming when they hear it. I'd say one of the best examples not listed so far is the Rolling Stones sample in Bittersweet Symphony...

Slash's intro riff on SCOM which reoccurs throughout the song. But the solo, the guitar solo at 3:40 is where the money is.

Damn he is a smooth guitarist.

That 7/4 bassline in Money comes to mind.

The grizzled stickman in me is trying to think of some well-known drum "hooks" but that may be more difficult. The first one I think of is When the Levee Breaks.

The intro and extended solo on Ted Nugent’s Stranglehold is legend.

Great idea for another thread – greatest atypical time signatures or chords. Details only musicians could break down and fully appreciate (hoping that doesn't sound too obnoxious). I was a kid when Money came out. I loved it (still do) and knew it was different, although I couldn't explain why until a few years later.

Tried to stick with intros although most repeat throughout the song. Kind of songs where you instantly know the song from the opening riff:

Bass-Another One Bites The Dust (Queen)
Keyboards/Synth-Bette Davis Eyes (Kim Carnes)
Electric Guitar-Jessie's Girl (Rick Springfield)
Acoustic Guitar-More Than A Feeling (Boston)
Drums-Rosanna (Toto)
Percussion (other)-We Will Rock You (Queen)
Piano-Don't Stop Believin' (Journey)
Saxophone-Baker Street (Gerry Rafferty)
Mandolin-Losing My Religion (R.E.M.)
Harmonica-The River (Bruce Springsteen)
