Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Bombs Galore: Eight of the nine races saw favorites go down in defeat.
  • Races 1 and 2: A massive double:

  • Race 7: Soul of an Angel (Shaun Bridgmohan/Gerald James) was the longest shot on the board at 36-to-1 and yet he won by more than two lengths. The trainer has been active since 2008 and has more wins this year (6) than his combined career entering 2022 (11 total).
  • Race 8: The $.50 Pick 5 paid $126,000+. The $.20 Pick 6 returned a gigantic $358,000+.

Mahoning Valley (Ohio):
  • Bobby Gorham entered two races and won both. That makes a win streak of three the past two racing dates.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Jose Ortiz won four times on six mounts and ended a successful day 6 4-0-1. The migration of riders from the NE to the SE has begun.

  • NYRA published today that a 19-day spring meet will open on March 30 and continue through April 30 at Aqueduct. At that point, I assume Belmont Park takes the reins. That will be approximately seven months where Aqueduct was the lone NYRA track.
  • Ricardo Santana, Jr. has a new agent and with that has teamed with longtime partner Steve Asmussen again. The two had split for whatever reason.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 4: Erick Fuentes rode his first winner after 28 losses to start his career. He got feted with the usual display:

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 9: Angel Morales won his first race in the US after 10 losses to start his career.

  • Race 8: Kitty Quick (Shaun Bridgmohan/Roger Laurin) won for the trainer whose career began in 1952 at the defunct Narragansett Park in Rhode Island. His father trained a horse named Secretariat.
  • Race 3: Kanthari (Luis Saez/Todd Pletcher) was the lone first-time starter and gave the trainer yet another strong candidate for his exceedingly potent barn.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Cristian Torres won three times and has gone ahead in the early days of the riders' standings.

Wow. Keep an eye on Tapit Trice. I don't know Todd Pletcher's future plans but if there is a wet track that horse has an advantage. A 2-year-old son to Tapit who was purchased for $1.3 million.

Todd Pletcher is a brilliant trainer and is re-stocked to the point that few can compare.

Hipodromo de San Isidro (Buenos Aires, Argentina)
  • The Punisher (Martin Valle/Carlos D. Etchechoury) won the first 2023 Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Challenge Series race, the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini-Internacional (G1). Yup, 11 months until Santa Anita (CA) hosts Breeders' Cup 2023.

1671337462355.png

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $10 million.
  • Race 9: General Banker (Eric Cancel/Jimmy Ferraro) won the $500,000 New York Stallion Series Stakes. The 0-for-7 colt won by more than 8 lengths in a strong showing.
  • Race 7: Les Bon Temps (Jose Lezcano/Michael Maker) won the $500,000 New York Stallion Series Stakes for fillies.
  • Race 6: Tapit Trice (Kendrick Carmouche/Todd Pletcher) battled gamely on an off-track in a second-lifetime start. I like what I saw here.

  • Linda Rice was the lone trainer with multiple wins. Her barn has been hot in recent days.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Xavier Perez-John Robb form a potent duo in the region. Today they won twice with four opportunities.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. won his first three mounts amid a 4-win day.
Hawthorne (Illinois):
  • Race 1: Respond (Constantino Roman/Ty Garrett) was out for the second time and got a win. A rare Colorado-bred winning outside the immediate area.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Cristian Torres and Robertino Diodoro won twice as a duo. They both lead their respective categories this meet.
  • Race 3: Atlantic Dancer (Cristian Torres/Nick Zito) was a 3-to-1 morning line. His Hall of Fame trainer had a good chance to snap an ugly 0-for-71 record this year but has now lost unofficially with his past 145 starters. Tough stretch for the affable trainer. But alas, here is one of his two Kentucky Derby winners:

Remington (Oklahoma):

Los Alamitos (California):
  • Race 4: Practical Move (Ramon Vazquez/Tim Yakteen) was sent off 10-to-1 in a field of five and defeated three Bob Baffert runners in a Kentucky Derby prep race, the $200,000 Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity. A disastrous result for Baffert and his connections in a race he historically owns.

Frankie Dettori could retire following the 2023 Breeders' Cup.

"It will be my last Guineas, my last Derby, my last Royal Ascot, and so on. I'll then probably finish in Britain on Champions Day or at Newmarket and then have my final farewell as a professional rider in California at the Breeders' Cup. Everything is penciled in, but that's my plan. I have had an amazing career. You can carry on for one more year, one more year, and then one more year, but I feel this is the right time, and I'll be young enough to do something else."

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Post Times: When NYRA cards 10 races this meet, first post is pre-noon. Those race days end just after 4:00 pm. No lights at the Big A.
  • Conclusion of Meet: Aqueduct races December 29, 30 and 31 and those are the remaining three days of the current meet. Aqueduct races through April 30 under different meet names.
  • Kendrick Carmouche rode a natural hat trick late in the day.

  • Randi Persaud had two winners. The trainer doesn't win two in a day often but shined.
  • Linda Rice had her second straight two-bagger. She ended the weekend 9 4-1-1. She leads the meet with 19 victories and has a 4-win cushion over Chad Brown who has sent out 39 less starters, though has dominated NYRA in recent years. Rice's 62% ITM is attractive as well.
  • Race 2: Forever Wicked (Javier Castellano/Randi Persaud) entered 2-for-45 lifetime but on a 35-race losing streak yet the Hall of Fame rider took the pre-race favorite to the winner's circle.
  • Race 4: Here is one for the boomers:

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Dale Capuano sent out three horses today and each returned victorious to result in a natural hat trick. While riders win three straight races often, it is much rarer for a trainer. His brother Gary sent out one horse yesterday and that was a winner. Per a Maryland Jockey Club press release, "Capuano, 60, registered a natural hat trick winning with each of his three starters Sunday, starting with Taking Risks Stable and Louis Ulman's 3-year-old Maryland-bred gelding Dolice Vita ($7.60) in Race 5 and 4-year-old Maryland-bred gelding Jackie A ($14) in Race 6. Jackie A is also owned by Mopo Racing, a partnership led by retired TV talk show host Maury Povich."
  • Jamie Ness entered five races and won twice. He won the first two races and finished third in the third.
  • Brittany Russell sent out a pair of young guns and finished 1-2 in Race 3. She has a 7-win lead over Jamie Ness among trainers this meet, which ends December 31.
  • Jeiron Barbosa is on top of the riders' standings. No place does bug riders better than Maryland, or so it seems the past many years.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 9: Someone nailed the Pick 6 for $137,000. The winning ticket had a 9-2-7-5-7-12 combination.
  • Race 5: Braccio De Ferro (Jose Morelos/Ernesto Ochoa) benefitted from an early-day rider change and as the longest shot on the board at 25-to-1 gave all holders of the winning Pick 5 more than $94,000.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Cristian Torres-Robertino Diodoro teamed twice and won both times. The pairing has been exceptional this meet. Diodoro won both races he entered.
Los Alamitos (California):
  • Finale: This is the way to end a meet, even if a brief schedule. The favorite nipped a 47-to-1 challenger:

Hawthorne (IL) has canceled Friday's card. It was one of a small amount of tracks racing that day due to Christmas Eve and Day approaching.

Delta Downs (LA) adjusted post times through Thursday due to weather issues in Louisiana. Usually a night track, Delta is racing in the afternoons this week.

Santa Anita is estimating a $20,000,000 handle for opening day (Dec. 26).

Interestingly, Santa Anita and Gulfstream -- same ownership -- will offer a $1 Coast-to-Coast Pick 5 beginning January 7. The bet is available every Saturday and Sunday until Santa Anita meet ends.

From what I could tell from TVG.
The inside of the turf course at Fairgrounds still looks really bad.
They will have the rails out really far on Saturday.
Only running the 2 stake races on the turf.
I hope they can get the course in good condition.

That is frustrating for the handicapper but it has to be nightmarish for people on the backside and employees who deal with the day-to-day operations.
