It does seem that Canadian teams suffer from a bit of bad luck too. Edmonton, Calgary, Van, and Ottawa all make the finals and no wins. Seems like with a few breaks Canada could have had 2 cups in the past 20 years. Still not great, but we probably wouldn't be talking about it if that was the case.

I think the other Canadian teams in the finals recently have just lost to better teams where as Carolina was severely overrated and the Oilers were probably going to roll over Carolina if Roloson doesn't get injured. This team took it to 7 games with Markannen who **** the bed in his first start in that series.

That was not just bad luck, that was a travesty.

Well, Montreal was 2nd in the NHL... last year.

Also, The Canucks won the Presidents trophy in 2011... AND made the Cup Final.

So, you may wanna work on your memory.

You may want to work on statistics and probability. With 7 Canadian teams in the NHL and these being by large some of the most profitable clubs that can spend to cap the odds of a Canadian team being in the SC final are pretty high in a 6 season segment. Last time was 2011 pfffft. Big deal.

As for the Habs an illusion everybody knew about. A team with the record they had only because they were playing in the EC which was much weaker last season. The Habs record against Western Clubs was a pedestrian 13-11-4OTL .

Yeah, this. There's a great article by Nate Silver on the underlying causes. He argues that the right fix is more Canadian teams... with no competition in their lucrative markets, they have less incentive to improve. QC, Halifax and Kingston would be a great start:
