All Time Draft #11 - The AAA Draft

The draft has ended

There were 672 guys drafted in the main ATD11 draft, 336 drafted in the MLD11 draft, making a total of 1008 drafted. But are they all truly the top-1000 of all-time? What about others? What players and coaches ought to have been drafted but weren't? That is what the AAA Draft is all about. Not only are there a bunch of guys who should have gone in the MLD but there might be some that could have gone in the main ATD, as among the top 600-750 of all time, third or fourth liners, third pairing blueliners or extra skaters, backup goalies or assistant coaches. We shall see.

The rules of the second-ever full AAA Draft will be exactly the same as the previous full AAA draft:

The draft will last exactly 12 days, two picks per day. We will draft a full 24-man roster. You must draft 2 goalies, 6 defensemen, 12 forwards and a coach, with 3 additional picks to be used for whatever position(s) you want.

Trading of picks is NOT allowed. After the draft there will be a 48-hour period to do trades or add/drop.

There is NO time limit. We will make two (2) picks per day every day anytime during the day from 9:00 am eastern each day. If you miss a day then make up the picks the following day(s).

Suggestion: POST A REASON OR STATISTIC OR DESCRIPTION WITH YOUR PICK to aid discussion and let us know a bit about the pick, as many may not be household names, especially from other eras.

Any player from any league or era are eligible as long as they were not drafted in the ATD11 or MLD11.

Player selection should be based on what they have done (the 'next best' draft, so to speak, the greatest all-time careers not honored by being picked in the main atd#11 draft), and not what they will do in the future, though it's understood that there is a bit of projection with players whose careers were cut short by injury.

Absolutely no dropping of players: once drafted they are drafted. At the end of the draft there will be a 48-hour period to trade or add/drop players, at which point a team could trade or else: pick up an undrafted UFA and simply discard a draft pick.

The number of teams that make the playoffs will depend on the number that qualify for the postseason. To qualify, a team must meet this all-time draft roster condition: Have on the team at least ONE player from each of the following time periods:

1939 or earlier
1940-1965
1966-1979
1980-1989
1990-1999
in 2009 (ANY active/nonretired pro player with 200-plus games pro experience regardless of when he began his career)

The very first game ever played in a top pro league defines which time period for the required condition (so, an eighties player whose NHL or SEL rookie season started in 1979 would meet the 1966-79 time period requirement).

--------------

The AAA11 playoffs will not be according to modern NHL format, but instead will be aligned to a pre-NHL Challenger Series format, :naughty: sort of like when the NHA, PCHA and earlier teams competed for the Stanley Cup.

AAA11 Playoff Rules (Challenger Format):

I). DURING THE LAST ROUND OF DRAFTING, and not a moment before, each team will be required to issue one (and can only issue one at a time) CHALLENGE to any specific other team in this draft.
II). The team that receives the challenge will then have 24 hours to ACCEPT the challenge if wants to, or REJECT it.
III). If a team receives multiple challenges at the same time (that is, gets one from two or more teams) then the team receiving the multiple challenges must accept one of the challenges it has received (thereby of course nullifying any challenge it may have given out).
IV). A team CANNOT withdraw a challenge; it remains issued until it has been accepted or rejected (or nullified by the other team's acceptance of a different challenge).
V). The challenges will be issued at the same time as one announces one's last two picks on day 12 of the draft.
VI). Every team must issue a challenge (or accept a challenge) on that day, not a day before (and not a day later unless necessary).
VII). Once a team has rejected a challenge those two teams are ineligible to compete against each other for at least that round (and for the following round if conditions permit).
VIII). Whichever teams are remaining without a series opponent set after the last day of drafting (did not accept or have a challenge accepted on day 12) will repeat the process the following day, after all standing challenges have been rejected (or deemed rejected by the passing of 24 hours without reply from the team).
IX). Private agreements reached beforehand via PM are within the spirit of the rules but are not binding until a challenge has been issued and accepted on the last day of the draft. Absolutely NO public on-the-HFboard challenges or insinuations of challenges to be issued prior to the last day of the draft. This is important to preserve the integrity and fairness of the process.
X) Of course, once a challenge has been issued and accepted it's binding and cannot be undone, the playoff opponent for that round is set.

----------

There will be no regular season ranking because it'll be like pre-NHL split league champions in a Challenger Series format playoffs.

Instead, each GM is to submit their ranking of the top three teams (rank them first, second, third) in each of the following twelve categories. No overall ranking. It's very likely that every team will be ranked top-3 in some category or other.

The 8 categories to vote on:

I. Top scoring line (likely a 1st or 2nd line)
II. Top two-way line (likely a 2nd or 3rd line)
III. Top defensive line (likely a 3rd or 4th line)
IV. Top starting 5 (lw-c-rw-d-d when puck drops to begin game)
V. Top defensemen duo pairing
VI. Top blueline overall (all 7 dmen together)
VII. Top goaltending (starter or tandem)
VIII. Top team chemistry (consideration of how skaters gell, how coaching "fits" with team style, captaincy, etc)

Note: You can include your own team in up to three (3) maximum of the eight (8) category rankings.

And, of course, we will vote on MVP and call-up player list. Submit a list of the top-10 draft picks in terms of their value in an all-time context. Which players ought to have been drafted in the ATD or MLD but wheren't? In addition to the top-10 list of picks other than yours, include a list of your own best three picks.

As well, since we have a 7-team draft, we will for playoff purposes all together construct an 8th team immediately following the draft, a sort of elite Double-A team made up of the best of the undrafted, as far as we all together see it. The team will come out of the blue to make a cup challenge and hence will be called the Dawson City Nuggets, after the historical team that did just that. The Nuggets will challenge the last team remaining during the Challenge Format process (no team may challenge the Nuggets). Here is how we all together will construct that team: Each of us individually decides on who the next best 10 players are and send them to Dawson City training camp (by PMing the list to me on the last day of the draft). Ensure that your list of 10 camp invitees includes at least one forward, one dman, one goalie, one coach. Once all invitations have been sent (in to me via PM) then I will post a composite list of each and every player invited to camp, and anyone who receives more than one invitation is automatically ont he team. We will then have a day or so to openly agree on whom else at camp will make the team.

I will manage the Halifax Eurekas.

March 9, 1899. An impromptu game between the Halifax Chebuctos and the Halifax Eurekas marked the first time an all-Black and all-White hockey team played against each other. The (all-Black) Eurekas won the game, 9-7. The following year saw the beginning of The Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes.

Generally acknowledged by hockey historians as one of the greatest teams of the early days of the sport, the club won numerous championships, starting with the 1891 to 1893 Ontario championships. In total, the club won the Stanley Cup eleven times, including two challenges during years it did not win the Cup for the season. In 1950, Canadian sports editors selected the Ottawa HC/Senators to be Canada's greatest team in the first half of the 20th century.

Penalty Kill 1: Stephane Yelle-Jorgen Pettersson-Willie Mitchell-Eric Weinrich
Penalty Kill 2: Sergei Brylin-Mark Osborne-Curt Giles-Lyle Odelein
Penalty Kill 3: Art Jackson-Joe Carveth

Day 1: Jason Spezza, #19
An offensively gifted player, Spezza was one of the most highly touted prospects in recent years, often compared to NHL Superstar and Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux
Day 1: Mike O'Connell, #20
Defenceman Mike O'Connell was an excellent skater with a host of offensive gifts. He was key performer on the power play and helped his team's transition game without neglecting his defensive responsibilities.
Day 2: Curt Giles, #2
Curt Giles was a steady defenceman who could pass the puck up ice effectively. He played nearly 900 games for three different teams between 1979-80 and 1992-93 but was best known as a fixture on the Minnesota North Stars' blueline.
Day 2: Danny Grant, #21
...Although he was not a swift skater, he was strong on his blades. He was also characterized as a tough winger who was clever, worked hard and packed a swift, accurate wrist shot.
Day 3: Art Jackson, #16
In Boston, Jackson became a solid playmaker and checker playing as the third centre behind Bill Cowley and Milt Schmidt. He was on hand when the "black and gold" won their second Stanley Cup in three years in 1941.
Day 3: Jaroslav Jirik, #12
He scored most of his goals standing in the crease area stuffing in rebounds. He didn't mind getting his nose dirty and despite not being very big he was extremely hard to move out from the slot when he parked there.
Day 4: Geoff Sanderson, #8
In only his second full season with the team, Sanderson flourished with 89 points in 82 games and played for Team Canada in the World Championships.
Day 4: Yevgeny Paladiev, #26
He was an extremely reliable and fearless defense player with a poweful long distance slapshot and effective body-checking and shot-blocking skills.
Day 5: Nikolay Puchkov
-8 First-team all-star selections in the Soviet League ('54, '55, '56, '57, '58, '59, '60, '62)
-World Championship Best Goaltender (1959)
-Olympic Gold and Bronze Medals
-USSR Hockey Hall of Fame (1954)

Day 5: Lyle Odelein, #24
A rugged blueliner, Odelein was a tough, physical player in his own zone and was a mainstay on the Habs' blueline through the 1995-96 season. He was a key defender when the club won the Stanley Cup in 1993 and registered a career-high eleven goals the next season.
Day 6: Eric Weinrich, #2
Upon his arrival in Philadelphia, Weinrich was one of the team's more durable players and played his 1,000th game in 2002-03 before being dealt to the St. Louis Blues shortly after the 2004 NHL All-Star game.
Day 6: Joe Carveth, #17
The next year was one of recovery, and the year after his career was back on track as he scored 18 goals and was a key element in Detroit's winning the 1943 Stanley Cup.
Day 7: Stephane Yelle, #26
With the Avalanche, Yelle continued to improve on his checking and penalty killing skills. Strong on faceoffs and considered one of the premier defensive players in the league...
Day 7: Mark Osborne, #12
Although he scored over 200 career goals, the hard-working winger was best at winning battles in the corners and checking the opposition's top line.
Day 8: Jorgen Pettersson, #22
Over succeeding seasons, he continued to develop into a more complete package as an outstanding penalty killer and above-average defensive player who was willing to bump with the opposition.
Day 8: Ed Olczyk, #16
Centre Ed Olczyk played over 1000 NHL games for seven different clubs. He was gifted playmaker with speed and a quick release. He was also solid on his skates and not easy to bump off the puck.
Day 9: Sergei Brylin, #18
Possessing good speed and a sound grasp of all the game's facets... His superior puck-handling and strength on his skates made him a versatile player for the club and an asset on both specialty teams.
Day 9: Willie Mitchell, #8
A sound defenseman with some offensive upside... Mitchell returned to the Wild for his fourth season with the club, where he continued to be a steady competitor on the team's blueline...
Day 10: Evgeni Nabokov, #20
A top performer in the USSR, he worked his way through the minors and became a top flight NHLer in his second year in the league.
Day 10: Emile Francis
He was groomed to be the bench boss of the parent club and ended up guiding the Rangers on three separate occasions. The peak of his tenure as the New York coach was reaching the Stanley Cup finals in 1972.
Day 11: Gary Leeman, #11
A speedy right-winger with soft hands, Gary Leeman played nearly 700 NHL games for five different clubs. He was best known as a gritty scoring machine on the Toronto Maple Leafs with a 50-goal season to his credit.
Day 11: Michal Pivonka, #20
Pivonka centred a line between Bobby Gould and Gatean Duchesne, making a good impression from the start with his strong skating, excellent passing, and willingness to play physically.
Day 12: Brad Marsh, #8
There is likely no one who enjoyed playing hockey as much as Brad Marsh... He quickly became a fan favourite. What he lacked in polish, he made up for in enthusiasm. His skating style, almost running on his skates, was awkward, but it got him efficiently from place to place....
Day 12: Ville Peltonen, #18
Over the years since he first hit the ice, Peltonen's focus has been directed more towards playing international hockey than skating in the NHL, although the National League did maintain a bit more presence in his life during the later stages of his career.

- Really interested in trying out this new playoff system.

- Although 8 teams makes for a nice and simple playoff, I feel that being able to "lure" in only 8 teams as opposed to 9 last time, represents a bit of a step back :(

The 12 categories to vote on:

I. Top scoring line (likely a 1st or 2nd line)
II. Top two-way line (likely a 2nd or 3rd line)
III. Top defensive line (likely a 3rd or 4th line)
IV. Top starting 5 (lw-c-rw-d-d when puck drops to begin game)
V. Top defensemen duo pairing
VI. Top Top-4 core defense
VII. Top blueline overall (all 7 dmen together)
VIII. Top goaltending (starter or tandem)
IX. Top powerplay (two 5-men units, coaching)
X. Top penalty kill (two 4-men units, goaltending, coaching)
XI. Top team chemistry (consideration of how skaters gell, how coaching "fits" with team style, etc)
XII. Top fighter (whether extra skater enforcer or in starting line-up)

Note: You can include your own team in up to three (3) maximum of the twelve (12) category rankings.

I posted these guys 3 minutes ago. Then I got worried because no one else did. Switched the setting to the eastern time zone and it showed my picks were made at 8:00. So I deleted them... in case any of you noticed that, that's why.

Anyone know why that is?

Halifax selects the two-time NHL all-star ('81, '83) who is second all-time in points among Blackhawks defenseman with 514 points in 1,008 games played. He is the first blueliner in franchise history to play in over a 100 NHL playoff games, five times going to the conference finals over his fifteen seasons in Chicago.

Halifax also selects an all-time great at what he does, in terms of talent, peak, career and championship experience, one of the great support players and a significant part in the history of hockey: two-way talented, tough, hardworking, fast, feisty, ferocious, competitive, clutch, forechecking, leader, team-first, successful on a top line or checking line, deserving of the main draft as a quality depth pick in an all-time context.

Bob "Hound Dog" Kelly

one of the toughest and the most tenacious... True to his nickname, Kelly bounded across the ice like an unleashed bloodhound, throwing his body around with abandon. A consummate team player, Kelly did whatever it took to win. He'd be the first in line to fight to defend a teammate.
He'd sacrifice offense for defense. He'd chip in timely goals.

Off the ice, Kelly's good-natured sense of humor and outgoing personality made him a favorite of teammates, fans, and reporters alike.
A consummate team player, Kelly was a sparkplug in the Flyers :stanley: :stanley: Stanley Cup engine.
http://flyers.nhl.com/team/app?service=page&page=NewsPage&bcid=2920

362 points in 837 NHL games with 1454 PIM and 23 GWGs (23 points, 172 PIM in 101 playoff games)
4-time Stanley Cup finalist, 2-time champion

The ‘Houndog’ brought plenty of bite to his game as one of the Broad Street Bullies, but Bob James Kelly could also hurt the opposition in plenty of other ways, too....

“The kid has lots of polish and is definitely hard to ignore,” praised the ex-Flyers coach, of the rugged rookie, who appeared in 76 games in 1970-71. “He can also add some offensive punch to our lineup.”

In his first year at the pro level, Kelly, when he wasn’t bowling over opponents or dropping the gloves, provided 14 goals and 18 assists, making him a valuable asset at both ends of the ice.

He duplicated that goal total in his sophomore campaign, reaching the double-digit mark in tallies in three of his first four NHL seasons. And as Kelly became more comfortable in his contributions, he began to elevate the physical side to his game, part of an intimidating group that would eventually earn the well-deserved ‘Broad Street Bullies’ moniker.

Aside from his hard-hitting ways, Kelly was a plus player in the truest sense, sporting a positive plus/minus rating in his first 10 NHL seasons, including a stellar plus+21 in 1974-75.

Kelly was also a major player in Philadelphia’s back-to-back Stanley Cup wins in 1974 and 1975, crashing and bashing rivals with a steady diet of bone-crushing body checks. In 1975, he netted three goals and added three assists in 16 playoff games.

On a team that featured mobility and muscle,... Kelly fit in perfectly. :flyers

In his final year in orange and black, 1979-80, Kelly had 15 goals and 20 assists, accompanied by 122 penalty minutes and a plus-19 rating, typical statistics for a player that relied on grit and guts to get the job done on a nightly basis.

In the summer of 1980, Kelly was traded to the Washington Capitals.. ‘Hound dog’ responded to the trade in fine fashion, scoring a career-best 26 goals along with 36 helpers. Although the Caps didn’t make the post-season, there was no ignoring the forward’s fine play during the regular schedule.

Overall, Kelly played in 837 NHL contests, recording 154 goals and 362 points. He was also a veteran of 101 playoff games, netting nine goals and 23 points overall.

It was truly a remarkable career for a player who went full-out every shift he took, never giving an inch to anyone regardless of their size or reputation.

...a solid offensive player at the junior level (21 goals and 44 points in 54 games as an Oshawa Generals rookie... it was already clear that his physical play, more than his goal scoring, would be Kelly's calling card.

Kelly was not only a fearsome forechecker, he also knew what to do when he dropped the gloves. He quickly gained the reputation as one of the toughest...
In Kelly's second OHA season, he averaged close to a point-per game (21 goals and 53 points in 54 games) to go along with his 117 penalty minutes.

"My first three NHL games were an unbelievable test for me and the whole team. Right away, I'm out there playing against teams like Montreal and Boston," says Kelly today. "I nearly froze up on my first shift. I'm out on the ice and there's guys like Henri Richard and [Jean] Beliveau."

Kelly soon overcame his nerves. During much of his rookie and second season, he played left wing on Clarke's line. Both years, Kelly tallied 14 goals. In his second season, he added 157 penalty minutes to the mix.

"My role changed under Freddie (Shero)," says Kelly today. "We had guys like Billy Barber and Ross Lonsberry who could play on the scoring lines, so Freddie used me to give the guys energy."

Shero did not view taking Kelly off of Clarke's line as a demotion, even if it meant less ice time for the player. Rather, he said that forechecking and fighting were areas where Kelly could stand out.

"If Bob Kelly scores twenty goals, I'm not using him properly," said the Fog (coach Fred Shero) in 1973. "He's got something that's hard to come by. No coach in the world can make a guy do what Kelly does. It's not in his contract. It comes from within him."

Every player from new team captain Bobby Clarke on down had the utmost respect for Kelly's value to the club.

"Anyone who says Kelly doesn't belong in the NHL has no idea what goes into winning hockey games," said Clarke in the mid-1970s. "Show me a team that wouldn't take Kelly in a heartbeat and I'll show you a team that doesn't want to be a winner."

While Dave "The Hammer" Schultz was the Flyers' best known and most frequent pugilist, Kelly was arguably the toughest. "He always gets in three or four punches before the other guy realizes he's in a fight," marveled Clarke. "He throws punches faster than anyone in the league."

Even the Hammer himself concurred. :teach2: "In terms of pure toughness, Kelly was first on the Flyers and I was second," Schultz told prolific hockey writer Stan Fischler. "With all due respect, Kelly became the heavyweight champion of the Flyers."

Statistically, Kelly had the worst season of his career in 1973-74. In 65 games, he scored just four goals and 14 points in fairly limited ice time and went pointless in the playoffs. His penalty totals dropped from 238 minutes to 130. But, as always, stats revealed little about his value to the team. For example, one night during the 1973-74 season, the Rangers jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the Spectrum. Shero's Flyers needed every bit of energy Kelly could provide them. The Hound toppled Rangers left and right, whipped Ron Harris in a fight, and assisted on two goals, helping the team rally all the way back to earn a tie.

Kelly's battles with the Rangers continued in the playoffs. After the Flyers dispatched the Atlanta Flames in the first round, they embarked on a seven game war with the Blueshirts. Kelly was a thorn in the Rangers' side throughout the first two games. Shero sent Kelly to "hound" Harris and drive New York to distraction with his forechecking. Rangers coach Emile Francis countered by switching Harris to another line and replacing him with rookie Jerry Butler. Kelly promptly pounded Butler. The Flyers took the first two games of the series at home.

scored the 1975 Stanley Cup winning goal

One of Shero's offbeat practice drills was to have his players take the puck behind the net, swing out quickly in front and try to score. The winner received a $5 prize. Little did anyone know that the drill would pay huge dividends. With the Flyers leading the Buffalo Sabres 3 games to 2 in the Stanley Cup Finals, they entered the third period of Game 6 in a scoreless deadlock. In the opening minute of the third period, Shero sicked the Hound on the Sabres. Kelly pounced on huge Sabres defenseman Jerry Korab behind the Buffalo net, jarring the puck free. He then swooped out in front of the net and beat Sabres' goalie Roger Crozier for his 3rd goal of the playoffs and the biggest goal of his career. Kelly was mobbed by his teammates. As he got back to the bench, he looked at Shero and said, "Freddie, that's five bucks you owe me." Kelly's tally was all Philly would need. A Bill Clement insurance marker gave the Flyers a 2-0 win behind Bernie Parent's shutout goaltending. The Flyers were once again the Stanley Cup champions. Today, Kelly says that he considers the second Cup "a little bit sweeter" than the first, because he was such a key contributor.

January 11th, 1976, Kelly manhandles the Red Army in the Flyers 4-1 win

Kelly enjoyed two his best seasons in 1976-77 and 1977-78. The first year, he received increased ice time and, for the first time, cracked the 20-goal barrier to go along with his 125 penalty minutes. The next, he scored 19 and was a playoff warrior, with three goals, eight points and uncounted big hits in 12 games. In particular, Kelly gave the Toronto Maple Leafs fits.

...the Flyers new head coach... Quinn's first moves was to experiment with a new line combination. He put Kelly on the left wing of a line with tough center Mel Bridgman... providing both energy and supporting offense... With Kelly, as usual, working tirelessly in the corners and creating extra room for teammates, Bridgman went on to score 24 goals and 59 points in addition to his 184 penalty minutes "Bob Kelly is one guy I never have to worry about," said Pat Quinn shortly before the 1979-80 season. "He comes to play every night and he's a leader both on and off the ice."

The 1979-80 season would be Kelly's last as a Flyer. He made it count. Now playing a veteran leadership role, Kelly dressed in 75 regular season games and 19 playoff contests. Although assigned primarily to checking duties, Kelly scored 15 goals. He also still knew how to lift the club's spirits with a well-timed fight or body check (122 penalty minutes). Kelly was right in the thick of the action as the Flyers set a North American professional sports record by going undefeated in 35 consecutive games. They ultimately lost in a heartbreaking six game Stanley Cup Final against the New York Islanders, who went on to win four consecutive Cups.

The Flyers traded Kelly to the lowly Washington Capitals... Knowing only how to play full speed ahead, the Hound put up his highest penalty totals since 1972-73 (157 penalty minutes). He also had to take on an increased offensive burden and responded with his best statistical season in the NHL – 26 goals and 62 points.

Kelly retired with 837 regular season games and 101 playoff tilts to his credit. He notched 154 regular season goals and 1,454 penalty minutes without having played a single game in the minor leagues.

"The Hound" was an instant hit with the Flyers fans and his teammates. Kelly soon became one of the team's resident pranksters – and was himself often the victim of practical jokes.

It was, in fact, a rookie Kelly who was the subject of one of the most elaborate practical jokes in Flyers' annals: the snipe hunt. The tale is still often retold by Kelly's old teammates and has been recounted in numerous hockey books.

For over a month, the veterans on the team told Kelly stories about all the fun they'd have snipe hunting. Then they claimed that rookies weren't allowed to participate.

"What's a snipe?" asked Kelly.

"They're sort of like pigeons," answered Flyers' veteran defenseman Ed Van Impe.

"Can you eat them?"

"Only the breasts. My wife cooks them in a wine sauce and are they ever delicious!" said Van Impe.

Kelly begged to come along. Van Impe said he'd consider making an exception to the no-rookies "rule."

Over the next few days, Kelly's teammates instructed him in the art of snipe hunting. Goalie Doug Favell had him practice "snipe calls" while enforcer Earl Heiskala told him that the way to hunt snipes is to beat the bushes with long poles and when the snipes fly, to shine a flashlight on them. The birds would get panicked and confused, giving the hunters a chance to catch them in fishing nets.

Of course, it was all a joke to initiate Kelly into the NHL fraternity. Van Impe arranged with friends in the Delaware County police department to come arrest Kelly for "hunting snipe without a license in a snipe preserve." They even arranged for a stern justice of the peace to scare Kelly into thinking he was going to jail. Finally, his teammates materialized in the courtroom and let him off the hook.

After the initial shock subsided, Kelly responded with his usual good humor.

When the NHL returned to action, the Spezza-Heatley-Alfredsson line led the club's offensive output all season long. During the subsequent playoffs, Spezza and the Sens captured the Eastern Conference championship after defeating the Presidents' Trophy winning Buffalo Sabres.

Over the summer of 2007, Senators owner Eugene Melnyk dramatically changed the club's management by firing General Manager John Muckler. He was quickly replaced by Bryan Murray who in turn promoted assistant coach John Paddock to head coach. Murray promtly signed Spezza to a seven-year $49 million contract extension with the Sens, and went on to lead the club in points with 92 and match a career best 34 goals. However, the Senators struggled through January and February and were ousted in the first round of the playoffs by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

..And second, from Chicago, Illinois, defenseman...

A good modern day comparable for O'Connell would be Brian Rafalski. Not only are they similar sized defensemen, but both were strong offensive contributors thanks to their skating, passing and offensive reads and pinches. O'Connell relied on his heavy shot perhaps more than Rafalski, but both were really crafty. Both were also solid defensive players, relying strong positioning and angling, rarely getting beat one on one. O'Connell was a noted shot blocker who was relied on to rush the puck out of the defensive zone.

Michigan drafts two NHL playoff scorers in right wing Scott Young and center Cliff Ronning. Young is a "quick skater who developed into an excellent forechecker with a hard, accurate shot" and Ronning had a "flashy style, mobility, and scoring touch".

RW Viktor Shalimov

Shalimov represented the Soviet Union between 1972 and 1982 126 times in the national team and potted 66 goals. With the 66 goals, he is the 2nd best Soviet goalscorer available - and when looking at it in the proper context, meaning who he played against, Shalimov is by a wide margin the best Soviet goalscorer available.

He was three times a top 5 scorer in the Soviet league (1st, 3rd, 4th). Comparable, already selected players: linemate Kapustin (2nd, 4th) or from previous era (late 50's, early 60's) Loktev (2nd, 4th, 5th). All the players with better records have already been selected, unless they played in the 50's or 60's, when the competition level was a huge question mark.

Shalimov was also twice (3rd, 4th) in top 5 in the Soviet MVP voting. Kapustin was once (3rd). During Shalimov's career, basically every year's top 5 consisted of Maltsev, Kharlamov, Yakushev, Tretiak, Mikhailov, Balderis, Petrov, Vasiliev and lated Makarov - all of who are unarguably ATD worthy picks. So having 2 top 5 finishes during the time span is impressive. Actually, apart from the aforementioned names, Shalimov was the only player to have 2 top 5 finishes in the MVP voting from 1972 until 1982 (the time frame of his national team career).

- 2 x Soviet league all-star (1976, 1982)
- Soviet league points leader (1976)
- Best forward at the World Championships (1982)
- Leading goalscorer at the WCH (1975, 1982)
- Points leader at WCH (1975)

Regina starts by selecting who we feel are the two best offensive players in the draft:

RW Jack McDonald
C/LW Don Smith

McDonald and Smith will give us the basis of two solid scoring lines. Both are among the four best goalscorers left, and both were better playmakers than most comparable goalscorers.

Bios and stats to follow.

I have this written up the night before. I plan on just waking up, hitting submit, and turning the screen back off. Once I get in to work I will check the thread again. In other words, if one of these guys was taken before I got here, I'll figure that out soon enough.

You beat me to Shalimov by two minutes.

Of the nine Soviet forwards drafted in MLD11 only Kamensky and Vikulov would I consider clearly better than him (Zhluktov at the same level).

He is the one Soviet player available for this draft that could arguably play on a main ATD team, without any real question marks due to the fact that he excelled during the post Summit Series era, when there was no doubt as to the worldclass level of play of the Russians.

He only scored 3 goals against Canada in international competition in a mere 9 games against Canada. But he scored some key goals among the 12 he notched in 35 international contests against Czechoslovakia. His tourney-leading perfomances in the 1975 and 1982 World Championships bookend a solid career in the Soviet league.
