Then what's the equivalent of putting Carle-Sustr and Morrow out there?

Winner winner chicken dinner. How is that different from how Carle/Sustr usage in the playoffs? I think there was a point by like Game 3 of the series against Chicago where they were out there for literally every even strength goal against, but they still got 15 minutes a night (while Q leaned on Keith haaaard).

Every team's third pairing sucks to some degree. Rolling three D pairings is stupid in the playoffs - ride your top guys.

I was asking, it's been 2 years so don't fully remember but you are right, Cooper did lean to those guys in the end of a games. You have a time out, use your best guys, can always double shift them and use that timeout if needed. But in the final 5 mins of a game when you have the lead, roll your top two pairings.

The Rangers also don't have a top guy that they can depend on. Their top scorer in these playoffs was Zibanejad at 9 points in 12 games. They are the only team out of the final 8 besides St. Louis to not have least one player at a PPG or better. It's no shocker that they didn't make it to the final 4.

This recent version of the Pens is unstoppable - they just find a way to get it done.

All the more emphasis on not blowing money on mediocre defenseman, you can always find plugs who fit your team needs. Run a good system with a decent goaltender - all it takes.

Pens defense:

Daley: 3.3m
Strait: 1.7m
Hainsey: 1.4m
Dumulin: 0.8,=m
Schultz: 1.4m
Cole: 2.1

Letang:7.25m
Maata: 4.5m

Schultz has really turned a corner.

That's the difference. Their GM scooped up a couple of players with warts that weren't wanted and turned them into something. Obviously this relies on some of the players they already have, but he took risks. Who is it now, Shero or Rutherford? I can't remember.

Rutherford is GM since 2014 if that's your question.
