The 2015 B Draft

Open Edition

316445.jpg

The Single-A Draft was more popular and active than expected, with a lot of great picks. There are still some all-time great players still undrafted that could have gone earlier this year and deserve paying attention to, as judgements vary a lot in the depth drafts. So, it's time again for another B draft. (We had one before, years ago.) Here is a way for the few of us to have fun while also allowing anyone to chip in contributions anytime!

Rule: ONLY make one pick. Then wait for another person to make a pick. After someone else makes a pick, you could pick again. No back-to-back picks by the same person (even when the same team has two picks).
This draft can work with two people or twenty people. But it dies if there is only one contributor (no clock!), and no one person will be drafting more than half the picks because of this rule.

For newbies to the all-time draft board, this is a history-oriented draft board, focused on careers to date, not just skill set and potential. So no currently playing players with less than four years of NHL experience would be eligible.

There are no GMs. Or better: Everyone and anyone can be a GM for a pick.

It would be nice to have a reason, stat, description or link to provide a rationale and help us appreciate the pick more.

It is a two-team draft. One is the well-known challenger Dawson City Nuggets.

The other is a Czech club that won of 11 of 13 national titles, won 7 of 9 Spengler Cups it entered and with the best Czech national team players playing for the club, it was the reigning world champions in 1949. Then: "While the national team was preparing to depart for the 1950 World Championship they were inexplicably imprisoned, preventing them from defending their world title, and effectively putting an end to LTC Praha." (The above pic is the team in action.)

LTC Praha selects HHOFer Shorty Green, the wiry but aggressive right winger who checked even the bigger, much heavier players. He was three times top-3 in team scoring, once 8th in NHL goals, once 3rd in NHL assists and captain of his club. He began playing in 1914 for hometown Sudbury and scored 19 goals in 12 games to lead the club to the Allan Cup final where he scored 6 goals in 3 games to secure the championship. He then went and became a WW1 war hero, returning to hockey afterwards. He only played in four NHL seasons but was an impact player.

Hockey Night in Hamilton said:
Although he was five-foot ten-inches, he was known as “Shorty.” But this Sudbury native could, and did play anywhere on the ice. He tackled every obstacle in his way on the rinks...

Lots of great stuff in this Mike Farkas bio here

Dawson City selects left winger Josef Augusta, a longtime member of the Czechoslovakian national team who played mostly on a line with Ivan Hlinka or with Eduard Novak and Milan Novy. Augusta played in four world championships between 1969 and 1978. In 1976 the veteran played in the Canada Cup and the Olympics, scoring two goals and an assist in the Olympic silver medal tourney. He played for Dukla Jihlava from 1964 to 1982 and won the Czechoslovakian league 8 times there. In the Canada Cup Augusta scored the tying goal with 5 minutes remaining in the championship final game, the team losing to Canada in overtime on a Sittler goal.

A talented playmaker, Willie Marshall was known as a dangerous sniper during his 20 seasons in the American Hockey League, in which time he became the most prolific scorer in league history. ... He returned to Rochester to finish up the 1971-72 season, his record-tying 20th in the AHL, and retired as the league’s all-time leader in games played (1,205), goals (523), assists (852) and points (1,375), as well as hat tricks (25) and Calder Cup Playoff assists (71) and points (119). ... In 2004, the American Hockey League honored Marshall at the All-Star Classic in Grand Rapids and unveiled the Willie Marshall Award, which is now presented annually to the AHL player who scores the most goals each season.
http://ahlhalloffame.com/willie-marshall-p139018

The O6 was different than 1991. This talented AHL playmaker played from 52-72. I think "the league’s all-time leader in games played (1,205), goals (523), assists (852) and points (1,375), as well as hat tricks (25) and Calder Cup Playoff assists (71) and points (119)" and had the AHL's "Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy" named after him, was as good as Cullen, but if you don't agree, don't use him in the B draft. I select C Willie Marshall.

Dawson City selects goaltender Ron Grahame, the 1975 WHA 1st Team all-star, 1975 WHA Ben Hatskin Trophy (Best Goaltender), 1975 WHA Playoff MVP and 1975 WHA 2nd team all-star. Ron Grahame was an NCAA all-star who was a great starter for a four-year stretch that included a WHA championship (he was twice WHA top goaltender and once a second team all-star) and only 6 loses in a 40-game NHL season as a Bruin the year they went to the Stanley Cup Final. Until his 28th birthday he was a star goalie everywhere he had played. Then the wheels fell off of the wagon when he was traded to Los Angeles for a first round pick (Boston used to pick a guy named Raymond Bourque).

It's a B draft. He's got 58 WC caps (7 tournaments as well as 2 Olympics) with 19 goals and 0.66 PpG during the heyday v the Russians and Swedes and he's in the Czech HofFame....seriously?

Given the amount of one dimensional 2nd and defensive oriented 3rd line NHLers, (nevermind the pre WW1 depth players) available, you think Kochta and Farda can't skate with these guys?

Just because it's a b draft doesn't mean you should be selecting random players. Please make an effort to select players who truly appear to be the best from their demographic.

Joe Pelletier said:
Did you know that Wayne Gretzky was not the 1st player chosen in the 1977 OHA midget draft? Despite being known as a national prodigy since the age of 6, Gretzky actually was chosen third by Sault Ste. Marie.

Drafted #2 was a kid named Steve Peters, and he never amounted to much as far as the NHL was concerned, playing in just 2 games with the old Colorado Rockies. Niagara Falls selected Peters over Gretzky only because the Gretzky family had said Wayne would not play anywhere other than Peterborough. (The Petes had the 4th pick, but plans were foiled when the Soo Greyhounds took Gretzky anyways. Gretzky did eventually report.)

Going first overall to Oshawa was a big strapping winger named Tom McCarthy. McCarthy went on to a great junior career, and was considered the top underaged draft eligible player in 1979. The Minnesota North Stars selected McCarthy 10th overall.

Nicknamed "Jughead" or just "Jug" due to his resemblance to the Archie comics character, McCarthy played nine seasons, scoring 178 goals and 221 assists for 399 points in 460 games with Minny and Boston. His best years were with Minnesota. In the 1982-83 season he scored 76 points in 80 games. The following season McCarthy had 70 points in 60 regular season games playing on a line with Dino Ciccarelli and Neal Broten.

I always like McCarthy myself. For some reason I had a soft spot for left wingers when I was a kid growing up. McCarthy's size gave him presence, and it was amplified by his agility, speed and creativity as well as his willingness to go into high traffic areas (at least in the offensive zone). His goal scoring totals and creativity playing along side Ciccarelli and Broten certainly made him even more noticeable, although his coaches probably were more annoyed with his lack of a defensive game and at-times lazy work ethic.

McCarthy was a popular player in Minnesota. For a time he owned and operated a fish and chips restaurant in the area called "McCarthy's: Just for the Halibut" which was a popular eatery.

Injuries plagued McCarthy during his career. He missed nearly half of the 1984-85 regular season and part of the 1985 playoffs due to vision trouble resulting from a concussion suffered when he was punched by Tiger Williams in a Feb.14, 1985 game. At other times in his career he also injured his back in car accident, broke a bone in his back when he crashed into the goal post, and missed time with a paralyzed face as he was diagnosed with Bell's Palsy.

McCarthy also had problems off the ice. He struggled with alcoholism during his years in Minnesota and spent time at the Betty Ford Clinic. He was arrested in 1994 by the FBI and pleaded guilty to driving a truckload of marijuana from California to Minnesota. He was sentenced to 5 years in prison, in which he served time in several jails in both USA and Canada. During his time in Leavenworth, Kansas he organized a prison hockey school.

Fortunately McCarthy was able to clean his life up after getting out of prison. He returned to hockey, coaching youth in the greater Toronto area.

Was he useful in any way other than scoring? Because judged based on offense, he looks really weak, like not even Mark Osborne caliber :D

No way he should've fallen to B draft.

21.43 minutes over 876 games is a good enough reason to take him here or a mini-draft above. But he does have some warts.

- At even strength the teams that gave him all these minutes were pretty bad - 7% below average, which isn't bad on an all-time level, but is pretty weak in an age where there was more parity.

- On the penalty kill his teams were 11% worse than average and he didn't actually get all that much time on these bad units - 39% usage is more than his fair share, but not much more.

- On the PP his teams were 18% worse than average. that's terrible enough for one season, but to average that over a 900-game career... wow. He was not a natural PP guy and was often used there because his teams had no better options. Actually if you sort all the 338 post-expansion players with over 700 games and 35% PP usage, only two consistently "contributed" to PP units more terrible - Walt McKechnie (955 GP, 40% usage, 27% below average) and Guy Charron (734 GP, 50% usage, 40% below average)

Basically his ice time figures make him quite attractive but the context in which they were earned make him less so.

Does any available defenseman bring better offensive peak? Good skater that received Norris votes in three seasons, topping out at 10th. Somehow won two Cups past his prime as bit-time role-player.

Well, he did spend his best years on the Canes' power kill...

Still, he's no PP QB, more of a point cannon.

Basically his ice time figures make him quite attractive but the context in which they were earned make him less so.

and he was doping
