What examples can you think of of teams that played way better than you would expect against one other team given their respective records over a year or period of years? The best I can think of is from 2003-4 when the Rangers beat the Islanders in regulation all six times they met even though the Islanders were 34 points better in their other 76 games.

Buffalo for years has always dominated the Leafs. Especially in Buffalo. Even years when Buffalo was terrible and Toronto was good ('02-04) they couldnt beat them. I have no clue why

Pittsburgh did not win a game in Philadelphia from 1974-1989 and from 1994-2000.

How about the Canadiens defeating the Bruins in the playoffs 18 straight times. Now that's having a team's number.

1945-46 finals
1946-47 semi finals
1951-52 semi finals
1952-53 finals
1953-54 semi finals
1954-55 semi finals
1956-57 finals
1957-58 finals
1967-68 quarter finals
1968-69 semi finals
1970-71 quarter finals
1976-77 finals
1977-78 finals
1978-79 semi finals
1983-84 division semi finals
1984-85 division semi finals
1985-86 division semi finals
1986-87 division semi finals

Poor Johnny Bucyk faced the Canadiens 8 times in his playoff career (1 as a Red Wing and 7 times with the Bruins) and never beat them.

The Hurricanes have done extremely well against the Canadiens in Montreal since the 2002 playoffs for whatever reason. I don't think they have lost a game in the city since the end of the lockout.

edit: confirmed. The Canes last loss to Montreal in Montreal was a 1-0 OT loss in the 03-04 season.

Tampa generally beats Pittsburgh for some reason, I mean before last season where Tampa were crap I mean prior to last season Tampa had won 12 straight against the Penguins with the last loss coming on the 17th of January 2003!!

From 1985 to about 1997 Patrick Roy beat the Flyers once. And you can imagine the number of times he played them. I dont have the exact numbers but I remember it being along the lines of 1-13-5 or something like that.

From the year they entered the NHL ('67-'68) all the way to the end of the '80-'81 regular season, the Minnesota North Stars were winless in all their 35 games in the Boston Garden against the Bruins. Granted, Boston was usually the better team in that era, but a 35 game streak is unbelievable.

Another one: in Tampa Bay's first 4 seasons they were 8-3-2 against Montreal, despite Montreal having a much better record in that span.

This one is more of a "quirk" than dominance, but in '88-'89 when Calgary had their big league-leading 117 pt season, the only team they never beat that year in 3 tries were the 19th place Leafs (62 pts).

Roy went 3-0 against the Flyers in Philadelphia in the 1989 Wales Conference Finals including a shutout.

When he lost Game One of that series, it was his first loss at home all season; he was 30-0-4 in Montreal entering that game.

When he won Game Two, his record against the Flyers' pregame was 0-4-5 (5=ties).

He went 4-2 in that 1989 series, as you said 3-0 in Philadelphia.

If I recall correctly, he went 0-1 in the 1987 playoffs.

His lifetime regular season record with Montreal against the Flyers was 1-11-7. His career mark ended at 7-13-10.

Here's another example: From 1997-9 Dallas had 223 points and Vancouver had 122, but the Canucks were 5-2-1 against the Stars over those two seasons.

Philadelphia was one of the few team's he did struggle against, although for a while there it didn't get any better after he left, until recently.

In 1987, Canadiens head coach Jean Perron was unhappy with Roy's play in the playoffs and pulled him for Brian Hayward who played the majority of that series.

I think it took Washington until their 6th season to beat Boston. On March 12, 1980 they finally broke through to break a 26 game winless streak.

That being said, the Bruins were a very good team in that era while the Caps constantly struggled until they got Langway. But even a broken clock is right 2 times out of 24 hours, right?

I think Florida's lifetime record against Montreal is 27-18-11. Not complete dominance but they're still the only team to have a lifetime winning record against the Habs.

The Pens used to dominate the Sharks.

I remember this game because the Pens had ten goals by the end of the second period.

They called off the dogs though and did not score in the third period of that game (after scoring 8 goals in the second period, which is probably still the team record for goals in one period).

Sens did lose 4 straight playoff series to the Leafs, despite often beating them in the regular season and usually finishing close to or ahead of them in the standings.
