Capital is money as in Capital investment. Capitol is the domed building in DC. I recall there being a reason why they couldn't use the word Capitol.

Capital is also the city of the official government for a city, state, country etc.

Washington is the capital of the United States. Hence the name.

They weren't named after the building.

They were named the Capitals because Abe Pollin realised that both his first name and his last name started with a capital letter.

The simplest explanation is that it's just named after the nation's capital hence Washington Capitals. Nothing about money or anything.
