I have to say your prediction seems to be more correct than mine. "More passable" feels on spot after I've seen this team.

This is going to be long, excuse me.
The finns D´s and goaltending is horrible so far in this tournament. Koskenvuo is not stable at all, but the defense doesn't give him much to work with. Vilén is a big disappointment for me. He's not good defensively and he is not an offensive powerhouse by any means. Suomi does have some offensive upside but god damn, he looses the puck too often and is a big risk defensively, a bit nonchalant. Many of the D´s give me the impression of being insecure or nonchalant. If it's only because their individual level or a combination with bad coaching is difficult to say. But in both games the opponents created good chances or goals from basically nothing.
Heimosalmi has been a bit of a surprise offensively for me. I expect a lot more from Vilén and Suomi. Juusola does look a bit shaky as well. Even if Juusola is producing points in this tournament I can't see the same talent I saw in Niemelä and Heinola at same age. In all fairness, that's not surprising because they are special.
Overall, I don't see anyone besides Malinen to be near the same level as Vaakanainen, Jokiharju, Juolevi, Heinola, Niemelä and even late blooming Laaksonen when they were the same age.
I not sure what to think about Salminen, I´m not that convinced of his greatness, not yet. Tuomaala is a pure goalscorer and you can't criticize him too much because he's producing. It will be interesting to see if he can create anything against tougher opponents in 5 vs 5. I´m not so sure about that.
Lambert is on another level but I do expect a lot more form him. Puljujärvi dominated this tournament with Tolvanen and Lambert has the potential and skill to do the same. Even if that Finnish team back then was better than this and had Ahokas and company leading the team.
Kemell needs to get more productive and start creating and produce some points. His talent is obvious, good with the puck, skates well etc but he seems a bit... Toothless? Doesn't feel so dangerous and that is a bit worrying because he has so much skill. Well, his young and hopefully it will come.

Regarding their future potential if I would take a guess? Malinen seems to be the only D with clear NHL-potential right now. Suomi has talent and will probably become a good player in a couple of years, but he seems a bit weak and an easy target for bigger forwards. Therefor his offensive should be exceptional for him to make it (and it isn't), otherwise he better get a lot stronger.
Koivunen has good attitude, works hard combined with decent skill and IQ. I like him.
Salminen, not that convinced he's that special.
In all honesty? I´m overall quite disappointed with this years players. Väisänen is not strong enough yet to use his size. Bad balance, but I guess that will come because he's so lanky. Yliniemi, well don't wanna be too harsh against young players but he does not stand out what so ever. We can include Päivärinta, Järvelä, Ruusunen and named Väisänen to this list. Forgot Miettinen, he is a disappointment for me.
I thought a bit higher of this team before the tournament and I guess I was wrong. I thought Kapanen could be a good role player but afterwards I get the feeling he's one of the 5 best players in this 2003 group.

Even if I hope they'll play better I just don't see this group winning any medals. Perhaps bronze but the goaltending, the defensive system etc looks horrendous at times. US and Russia should be better and Canada will destroy Koskenvuo if we play against each other.

Of course our boys should get much much better if they wanna win a medal.
Gold goes most likely to Canada and Silver to USA or Russia or Sweden.

So Bronze might be realistic outcome
but it requires that this Finland U18 team overachieves on it's potential.

If we look potential names to next years U20 WJC's of this team
who players are worth of that chance in your opinion.

I say Koivunen, Salminen, Tuomaala and one of Kemell, Heimosalmi, Malinen, Miettinen.
Only Lambert is a lock for 2022 U20 WJC's so he's on the team 99,99% likely
without injuries etc health worries.

Kids have shown lot of character in these 2 games. Great thing to see, it should help them grow their confidence.

Keep in mind goalies and defence are still huge weaknesses for this U18 Team Finland.
We aren't gold medal contenders or even favorites this year.

There is still so much holes and problems on Finland's gameplan
and being honest i don't see this team continuing games in these U18 WJC's after quarterfinals
without huge improvements in goaltending, defence, powerplay etc.
But if all goes well and perfect maybe then we have a chance to win bronze.

Of course it's great to see guys like Tuomaala, Salminen, Koivunen and Miettinen
taking scoring load off on Lambert's shoulders but more secondary scoring is still a need.
There is guys like Kemell etc who haven't scored yet any points and that's a problem.

Well, I don't know what you guys expect - we basically never are gold medal favourites and we basically never play very impressive hockey in round robin. Yeah, the team seems pretty mediocre this year, but the elimination games will be best of one, and even if it is a slim chance, there is a chance of even gold. I don't get this perennial Finnish misery and pessimism around our teams basically in any age group and level...

I´m just comparing to earlier roster these last 5 years. It's nothing but facts that Finland is turning into a powerhouse behind Canada and therefor the expectations get higher. I actually think it's understandable. Just look when some of the players get drafted? They are supposed to be good for their age.
I mean Salminen is considered a first or second round player and I just haven't seen it (this draft is a bit weak though).
Lambert is one of our bigger talents ever.
I doesn't matter if we have a small population, just compare with Sweden. Football is their national sport and hockey is Finlands and there is no way around it.
The point? Even the players consider them as medal favorites every year and therefor it's natural the expectations have gotten bigger these last years.

To show you what I´m talking about. Players born 94 and later: Lindell, Teräväinen, Ristolainen, Lehtonen, Määttä, Suomela, Barkov, Lehkonen, Hintz, Rantanen, Niku, Kapanen, Lammikko, Mikkola, Aho, Saarijärvi, Nättinen, Saarela, Borgström, Ruotsalainen, Tammela( Lots of injuries just like Juolevi, Määttä and Joni Ikonen which probably slowed them down), Björkqvist, Juolevi, Puljujärvi, Kuokkanen, Laine, Välimäki, Salo, Somppi, Luostarinen, Puustinen, Talvitie, Vesalainen, Heiskanen, Tolvanen, Ylönen, Jokiharju, Vaakanainen, Laaksonen, Heponiemi, Ikonen, Kupari, Honka, Thomson (not a fan), Maccelli, Ranta, Kivenmäki, Nousiainen, Kotkaniemi, Nordgren, Kakko, Lundell, Heinola, Hatakka, Puistola, Saarela, Nikkanen, Pärssinen, Tieksola, Miettinen, Aaltonen, Kokkonen, Tuomisto, Niemelä, Aatu Räty, Järventie (not a fan), Viro, Hirvonen, Simontaival, Helenius, Rajaniemi, Puutio, Jämsen, Mäenpää, Jurmo, Pärssinen junior etc.

Goalies: Korpisalo (Not his biggest fan), Saros, Lankinen, Kähkönen, Luukkonen, Lehtinen, Lindberg, Blomqvist.

And I've probably forgot some names here. You should get the point here and understand Finland is a totally different hockeynation nowadays compared to 10-15 years ago.
The depth these last years is something else, almost on the level with Sweden and Russia. The elite talent has been there every year as well.

Disappointing result after good USA game, but hey Group B winners! Defense is getting better, but still it's not very tight, centre lane is way too open. They should learn couple lessons from this game. Defense still needs to improve more, if we want to play in gold medal game.

Koskenvuo was good, he gave a chance to win this game in regulation time. I don't know why people doubt him, he hasn't allowed any easy goals, imo. Koskenvuo is not a high end prospect but right now he's good enough to lead us in the medal round.

2nd powerplay unit needs to improve we need that secondary scoring, i hope Lambert is fit to play in Q-final. Kemell loves to shoot the puck a lot and Lambert would bring more creativity in that unit. No point to brake PP1 if Lambert healthy, it is working just fine. But overall, i have good feeling about this team.

Can we really win with Koskenvuo? (4.21 gaa, .870 sv%)
I'd pick Helomaa.

Sure, at times, Koskenvuo has been great but...he has let easy ones in thou,
i'd still go with Helomaa, starting with Switzerland game.

Refresh my memory.

Koskenvuo didn't get any help from the defence in the first 2 games, but he still won those games. And win over USA was 3 seconds away, defending in closing moments failed. Gallagher skated through 2 finnish players and scored a goal and also defending in OT was very weak. Helomaa don't get to play anymore games, unless Koskenvuo melts like Vehviläinen in 2016 WJC.

Worst game of the tournament against the Swiss, but Swiss played a great game and our defense could learn something from them. However we survived that game and achieved the minimum objective.

Russia is next and it's winnable like always, but first we have get rid of the turnovers in our own end or Russia will destroy us. Michkov has to be marked, he can't have any room or time.

Everyone is expecting Canada - Russia gold medal game, now Finland has to do what we do best and ruin it for everybody. Winter War spirit, Suomi - Perkele !!! Hockey is our game !

Comeback kids almost did it again. No excuses Russia was better, congrats to them. Bronze medal game against our other neighbour coming up. I would do some line changes.

Koivunen - Salminen - Tuomaala
Huuhtanen - Lambert - Kemell
Päivärinta - Miettinen - Matikka
Väisänen - Järvelä - Kapanen
Ruusunen

I really like your suggestion. Huuhtanen with his size could thrive playing with two good skaters and creators.

Will be a fun final but if Canada plays like they did against Sweden in the third period they will break the Russian goalie and defense apart.
Sweden was quite decent before all those penalties in the third period and Canadas increased effort and tempo.
I do believe Sweden will win the bronze because they have a better goalie. I don't think the Swedish team is that bad, it's more that the Canadians is better than ever in this tournament.
I also believe Canada would have steamrolled Finland in a semifinal as well, why? Defense and the goalies. Let's sum their efforts down below.

Koskenvuo, his positioning is nothing but horrible. He needs a coach to learn him this, otherwise he will not even become a successful goalie in Liiga.
Helomaa? He didn't look explosive or agile even if he got the shutout. His stickhandling behind the net looked really insecure as well. Even if he gave me the impression of being more compact than Koskenvuo, I mean that's not so difficult after witnessing his positioning in this tournament...
Suomi, I actually think this guy played himself out of WJC-20´s for next year as well. Horrible fumbling with the puck and really shaky and nonchalant, and that should be his strengths. Defensively? Let's just say that in two games against Russia he gave them at least two goals by his own. I feel sorry for him but he needs to get a lot stronger and play a lot more decisive otherwise Liiga will be he his ceiling, which still is pro level but I do believe he wishes and wants more.
Vilén? I expected a lot more from him this tournament. Nothing special at all. Can become a good KHL, SHL defender at tops. Perhaps a bottom six in NHL if his development gets going. Was not good in the big games.
Malinen? So disappointed with him in the playoffs. I do believe he has the most potential of these D´s but this was not a good tournament for him. Should get more decisive as well but they are young so I´ll give them that.
Heimosalmi, the only one who had a good tournament among the Finnish D´s. Not that good against Russia but I still think he raised his stocks and played at his top level unlike Malinen.

Offense?
Lambert must be injured or something. Lackluster the whole tournament. Even if I do believe the coach gave him a bad role in this team i don't think he's 100 percent healthy.
Kemell is the second biggest talent after Lambert in this roster and up there. He's able to create a whole lot and will probably get better. He can skate, his handling is really smooth and he reminds me of a attacking Heinola in the way that he is so calm and collected. Will become a joy to watch in the future. Needs to become a little more gritty and tough and play with that lion heart on his sleeve. But man o´ man does he look good.
Tuomaala? I get the impression he´s a bit of a Tolvanen and Laine for his age group, with a lot better skating of course. Great goalscorer, great shot, good skating and above average stickhandling. But not that impressive in 5 vs 5 like Kemell and a healthy Lambert. Not the same finesse as Finnish players like Teräväinen, Aho and perhaps Kemell in the future. I´m sure he´ll be good with a good playmaking center in the future but he's not the one who will carry any line.
Salminen? He's good but I don't see any top6 talent in him what so ever, not sure even if he's a future top9 either. Not now that is. Even if the guy is good he's nowhere near players such as Granlund, Armia etc at the same age and they've only become top6-bottom six forwards in the NHL. I actually don't think Salminen is any better than a comparable player such as Vesalainen at the same age, quite the opposite if you look at finesse, skill and so on. Even if Vesalainens attitude has been questioned a couple of times and Salminen seems to be more hardworking.

The thing is, besides Heimosalmi there hasn't been any other positive surprises in this tournament. Expected or hoped to see a bit more from Matikka, Miettinen and some others, perhaps even Kapanen. Oliver was unlucky with the injury, which probably made him a bit more passive.

Embarrassing ending to the tournament, despite having couple of great comebacks we didn't deserve anything more than this. Finland just couldn't get rid of those defensive zone errors, those were way too costly. Congrats to Sweden, but worry we get the next one lillebror. This also should be valuable lesson to our players, you don't wanna lose the last game of the tournament. It's always better to go home with medals than without them.

Lions and lambs:

Lambs:
-Topias Vilen & Jimi Suomi
- they were supposed to be our leading d-men, but they were easily our worst two players. Mistake after mistake, how is that even possible? It's like they forgot all the basics how to play hockey. And how Vilen managed to play 35 games in Liiga this year?

-Rasmus Ruusunen - Sami Päivärinta - Joakim Kemell
- They couldn't greate any secondary scoring in this whole tournament, they didn't have any chemistry. And Kemell was the primary victim of that, he shot the puck thousand times and scored 3 goals. Päivärinta was almost invisible through out the tournament and Ruusunen 0+0 in 7 games. Most of the blame goes to Karjalainen, he's the one who kept this line together through out the tournament.

-Brad Lambert
- He must have been injured through the whole tournament, he couldn't get anything done. And Lambert didn't play as center, i only remember him having two shifts as center. Maybe they wanted to give him easier minutes. And just like Kemell, Lambert didn't have any chemistry with his linemates. Another failure by Karjalainen.

Bubbling under:
-Aleksi Heimosalmi
- Highlight reel defenseman, made some great plays but defensively he was weak. Intresting prospect nonetheless and he will have bright future ahead.

-Verner Miettinen
- Faceoff specialist, next Petri Pakaslahti at least. Won many important faceoffs, but he should have had bigger role in these last games.

Lions:
-Ville Koivunen - Samu Salminen - Samu Tuomaala
- 1st line played like the 1st line was supposed to play, they did everything what they could do. But unfortunately they were alone in scoresheets.

-Niko Huuhtanen
- Best player outside the first line, he also deserved bigger role in the end.

-Miko Matikka & Juho Järvelä
- Bottom-6 grinders who worked their asses off, they deserve some credit. I think Huuhtanen-Järvelä-Matikka could be very effective 4rth line in upcoming World Juniors.

I hope the U18 tournament returns to Europe soon, these game starting times hard.

Maybe a bit ot but am i the only one whos angry about tv5? I mean first the crappy quality and now even worse, they are skipping the final game to show... Naked survivors. I mean i get that it's a junior tournament and only hc fans watch it, especially in these hours but is there really more hc naked survivor fans who wake up early to watch it before going to work? I know i woke up exited thinking im gonna see a bit of Bedard vs Michkov before going to work just to find out they rather air this s**t at 5am. International hockey really needs to go back to YLE.

Karjalainen said the team was both physically and mentally spent. It was obvious.

https://www.is.fi/jaakiekko/art-2000007963509.html

The comments about the team playing flow hockey. It was obvious that when they in the flow, offensively they were dominant. Unfortunately they reach the flow status only after having their backs against the wall. I hope the players learned from this that it's better to take the initiative yourselves from the opening faceoff.

They came 4th guys. We always hope for better but these are young kids. The talent is definitely there for the future.

No doubt in my mind that Lambert was injured. Fell everytime someone touched him and terrible in board battles. All signs of injury.

Interesting to read your opinions, thank you.

Even if that line with Kemell was really bad I don't think Kemell himself was that bad. He tried at least and hade some courage to do something on the ice. The two others were alibis achieving nothing.

Suomi, sorry to break it but... His performances in these games were the worst I´ve ever seen by any defender in a Leijonat jersey. He was not bad, he was really bad in every game that mattered. I hope he'll recover because that was actually really difficult for me to witness, I felt sorry for him and I think Karjalainen should've benched him or something to make the team and especially Suomi himself a favor.
Vilén? Horrible just like Suomi. Fumbling, nonchalant and no intensity in his game what so ever. Scary that a guy like this get to play so much in Liiga when he's not even able to defend against juniors.
Almost get a feeling these two guys played themselves out of any future junior tournaments for the Finnish national team. Hopefully they learn something from this and become better and stronger.

The first line? The wingers were only good in the group stage. They achieved nothing in the playoffs. Salminen is a bit overhyped in my opinion. Mostly because these 2003 born players are a bit weaker. He's not on the same level as other Finnish forwards before him and I´m not even comparing with Laine,Pulju Aho etc. More like Vesalainen, Tolvanen, Heponiemi, Kupari, Lundell etc and no, I don't think he's as good as them at the same age.
He's good but I still expect him to take a top 9 or bottom 6 role in a Finnish u-20 team if they have the potential to win anything.

Miettinen? I think you are exaggerating a bit. He was good at faceoffs, but in the semifinal against Russia? I got the feeling he lost more or just as many faceoffs as he won?

Lambert? The biggest underachiever of all "Stars" in this tournament.

Matikka good? I´m actually disappointed with him. When I saw the intern game at Vierumäki he showed a whole lot more. Guess I was expecting a bit more than you then. But I do like your suggestion for the future fourth line. If they have some chemistry that could be interesting.

Huuhtanen? There is something I like about his game. Reminded me of Koivula and Tuulola a bit, but I do believe he can get even better if he works on his skating, stamina and shot. Seems to be calm with the puck, really strong.

Players that were okay this tournament: Heimosalmi & Huuhtanen, no one else can keep their head high.
Kemell good in some games just like Salminen. Koivunen was good in the beginning of the tournament, not when it mattered.
Don't think Tuomaala was that good. Didn't show up in the big games and didn't do much in 5 vs 5 to be honest. Kemell was a lot better in that aspect, even if he was egoistic. He played with two alibis so he tried himself, can't criticize him too much for doing that.
Tuomaala gets a free pass? Besides that nice assist in the PP I thought Tuomaala always tried to score himself, even when he had better linemates.

Karjalainen? Sorry mate, but you should get fired. Dude was dead behind the bench. No emotions what so ever. Active coaching? Never ever did he act or REACT to anything and try to tweak something to make it better.
His goalie selections? Never seen two bad goalies at the same Finnish roster.
I remember not liking Ortio and Similä back in the days. Aittokallio and later on Vehviläinen in one tournament. This was actually even worse to witness. At the same time they had the worst Finnish defense in front of them. 27 goals in five games? That there is unacceptable and Karjalainen deserves to get shit as well, no way around it.

Last but not least, these three goalies should not get the chance to represent Finland in the WJC`s and if they do? I will only blame the coach for giving them the opportunity.
Hopefully we have more talent in Lukkarinen, Noa Vali and Emil Vinni. Perhaps Kokko? When it comes to future WJC´s? After Blomqvist I would choose these youngsters before the 2003 born goalies without blinking.

Looking forward to see these goalies and some other talents such as: Kiviharju, Kasper Lundell, Kemell, Jesse Nurmi, Rönni, Hynninen, Elmer Laakso, Lassila, Hämeenaho, Hokkanen, perhaps even Järventie at next years u-18. The roster should be better on paper and hopefully we'll see a better coach.
Btw, what happened to Vuorio?

True, Kemell did try a lot. He had a big role and he played lot of minutes, but he just didn't deliver it. Kemell needed a true playmaker to play with him. And if Tuomaala would have played in the 2nd line instead of Kemell, the results would have been the same. 2nd line was just so poorly builded.

Miettinen? I think you are exaggerating a bit. He was good at faceoffs, but in the semifinal against Russia? I got the feeling he lost more or just as many faceoffs as he won?
Miettinen did disappear in the picture in last 2 games, but he had decent tournament.

Matikka good? I´m actually disappointed with him. When I saw the intern game at Vierumäki he showed a whole lot more. Guess I was expecting a bit more than you then. But I do like your suggestion for the future fourth line. If they have some chemistry that could be interesting.
This tournament was a first time i saw Matikka play, so i didn't have any expectations. I liked what i saw, he worked hard and he brought excellent net-front presence to 1st Powerplay unit. And PP1 became much more dangerous and effective after Matikka was put there.

Karjalainen? Sorry mate, but you should get fired. Dude was dead behind the bench. No emotions what so ever. Active coaching? Never ever did he act or REACT to anything and tried to tweak something to make it better.
Like i said in the other thread, Karjalainen will be gone his contract expires literally in few days/weeks. But the problem is that the next U18 head coach, is a current U17 head coach and he is Mika Marttila. Last time when Finland U18 team was under Marttila in 2019, it was painful and horrible to watch.

Current U16 head coach is Lauri Merikivi and he will be U18 head coach in 2 years. He was also assistant coach in this tournament and 2018 tournament under Niemelä. Next U16 head coach hasn't been announced yet, Antti Miettinen might be on top of that list. 5 years as a assistant coach(4 years in HPK, 1 year in U20 NT team) under Pennanen, and probably returns to his assistant coach role at the next World Juniors. Miettinen was also supposed to be an assistant coach in last year U18 tournament.

Anyone have any clue what the U18 2022 team Finland might look like?:help::help::help:
Lines could be something like this:

Jani Nyman - Jere Lassila - Joakim Kemell
Aleksanteri Kaskimäki - Kasper Lundell - Lenni Hämeenaho
Emil Järventie - Topi Rönni - Kasper Halttunen
Santeri Sulku - Oskari Vuorio - Aaron Hakala
