I'm hopeful Brooke Henderson will be good for a Gold.

I don't really follow summer sports as much, who are our Gold Medal contenders this time around? We always seem to do well in new sports that didn't exist 20 years ago.

I'd love to see the women's soccer team get another medal but not sure that's going to happen again. They really weren't much of a threat at the last World Cup.

I'm not getting my hopes up for more medals at the Summer Olympics. Were usually terrible at the Summer Olympics since were a winter sport country. That said though I will still cheer my heart out for Team Canada! I'm looking forward to watching it!

Same here. Diving is one of my favourite events every year even though those Chinese kidframed athletes never fail a single dive and even when they do, they still get good grades because they never produce any splash...

Also looking forward to short distance swimming and running (Andre de Grasse FTW!), beach volleyball (Canada is actually a threat in this), Rowing, tennis and some gymnastics events!

Man I love the Olympics, wish I could go sometime...

I think we have a good chance to get a couple Gold. Anywhere from 3-5. I'm sure one of Canada's Fab 5 diving crew will get a gold medal, Rossie MacLean will defend her Gold most likely, Brooke Henderson could get us a Gold Medal. Beach Volleyball we actually have a good chance to get a Gold on both Men's and Women's side, more so women's than men's but we have Medal contenders in that event. Our teams have been killing it on the FIVB Tour. Canada's women's basketball team is at their peak right now. I think we will easily surpass 20 medals. Hopefully we can just get more Gold.

Olympic Predictions has Canada projected for 3 golds, 6 silver, and 7 bronze. I think the Canadian Olympic Committee targeted 19-21 medals and a top 20 finish, so those projections would be a little disappointing compared to our designated target.

Cycling Track Women's Team Pursuit
Women's Synchro 10m Diving
Benjamin Thorne - Men's 20km walk

Antoine Valois-Fortier - Men's Judo (81 kg)
Geneviève Morrison - Women's freestyle wrestling (48 kg)
Men's 4 x 100m Relay Team
Women's Rugby Sevens Team

It's great that our track and field program has started to produce so many medal threats in recent years. Warner, Drouin, Barber, and Thieson-Eaton are the best athletes we've produced in athletics in a long, long time.

At the same time though, it's tremendously disappointing to see how far Canada's rowing and swim programs have fallen. We used to be guaranteed for at least a few medals each across both disciplines and now we're barely even on the map in those sports.

How could you forget Andre DeGrasse who will challenge for the 100m title this year. He came close to beating Usain Bolt already. Also won a Pan AM Gold against a pretty decent line up. Also our 4x100m mens relay team is very good.

DeGrasse was just a mental oversight on my part. He's had a phenomenal last two years and should really be something elite when he comes into his prime.

I don't think he's expected by most to challenge for more than a bronze this Olympics though.

No way Benfeito gets gold... For some reason, they're giving 0 medal to China in diving which is absolutely impossible since they will be winning medals (probably gold) in every event with their child-like athletes performing

What happened to the Canadian rowing teams? Always used to be good for medals in the eight's, four's and two's. Or at least medal threats.

Not that familiar with Canada's equestrian team but maybe Eric Lamaze can pick something up in Equestrian Jumping as well.

A friend from highschool is competing in the 58kg freestyle wrestling, so while I'm not usually interested in the summer games I'll definitely be watching and cheering her on.

I don't understand how we end up being bad at rowing. Isn't that a sport we're supposed to get multiple medals in?

We also used to be fairly good at syncronized swimming.

Canada rowing broke up he Men's Eight in favour of smaller boats and hopefully more medal threats. It certainly hasn't worked out so far which is unfortunate as the Men's eight has traditionally been a threat to win (silver in 2012, gold in 2008).

Certainly have more potential medals than one bronze, but the big boat is Canada's traditional strong point.

Opening ceremonies aren't until Friday but Canada's women's soccer team gets underway today against Australia.

They won bronze in 2012 after that epic SF against the USA. So they are a medal shot.

Long shot. European teams, especially France, have gotten much better (thanks to the federation forcing big clubs to spend X amount of their budgets on womens team). Japan is still strong. China.

We could win a medal, but it is a long shot (as it was a long shot last time).

Wow. That is ridiculous.

Read something about Canada's long time rowing coach being with Russia the past couple years too with the split being rather acrimonious and rankling quite a few feathers but there's no excuse for a program that was one of the country's strongest to be so ho-hum. So much for this "own the podium" or "road to excellence" credo applying as much to the more prestigious Summer Olympics as it did for the less prestigious Winter Olympics.

Beijing was a great stepping stone and showed that Canada could be competitive in less traditionally strong disciplines. Then they **** all over that progress by the time London 2012 came around and failed to even show comparatively well in disciplines that are traditionally strengths.

They have a tough group with Germany and Australia. Japan didn't qualify.

Definitely going to be tough to get a medal, but you never know.

CBC has their match against Australia today at 2 EST.
