Name your teams with the best NHL players during the 2001-2002 and 2016-2017 seasons, and tell me who you think would win. 12 forwards, 6 defense, 2 goalies

lol i realized I wasn't clear enough, I was thinking your favourite stars across the NHL, not your respective favourite team :)

Bure (20 points in 12 games)-Lindros-Theo Fluery
Petr Nedved-Mike York (legend)-Matt Barnaby
Martin Rucinsky-40 year old mark messier- Radek Dvorak

Leetch-Poti
Bryan Berard-no name #1
No name #2- No name #3

Richter
Blacburn

Despite some legendary names on here on offense the 2017 rangers would thankfully spank that ass...S/O to dan Blackburn who actuallly had sky high potential prior to injury..fun fact he tried to play with 2 blockers when he came back because he couldnt lift his glove high enough anymore

Reds are the players I would take ahead of their counterparts
Oranges are a wash (based on those seasons only)

2001-02 :help:

Richard Zednik - Yanic Perreault* - Oleg Petrov
Sergei Berezin - Doug Gilmour - Donald Audette
Jan Bulis - Joe Juneau - Andreas Dackell
Mike Ribeiro - Shaun Van Allen - Chad Kilger

Andrei Markov - Patrice Brisebois
Karl Dykhuis - Craig Rivet
Sheldon Souray - Stephane Quintal

Jose Theodore**

*Saku Koivu out for the season
**Hart Trophy Winner

2016-17

Max Pacioretty - Alex Galchenyuk - Alexander Radulov
Paul Byron - Philip Danault - Brendan Gallagher
Artturi Lekhonen - Tomas Plekanec - Andrew Shaw
Dwight King - Steve Ott - Torrey Mitchell

Andrei Markov - Shea Weber
Nathan Beaulieu - Jeff Petry
Alexei Emelin - Jordie Benn

Carey Price*

*Theodore had a better 2001-02 season that Price in 2016-17. I obviously think Price is the far more superior goalie.

Edit : I seem to understand you asked for the top NHL players. Sorry, the post above mine sent me off track a little

Basing it solely on that year...this is tough. Lots of great talent, and I'm a bit biased by watching a lot of the last few years.

2016-2017

Ovechkin - Crosby - Kane
Panarin - McDavid - Kucherov
Marchand - Malkin - Tarasenko
Benn - Backstrom - Draisaitl

Skinner, Laine, Matthews all other options.

Hedman - Karlsson
Keith - Burns
Suter - Weber

Josi, Subban, Doughty, Giordano alt. options

Bobrovsky
Holtby

2001-2002

Naslund - Sundin - Iginla
Tkachuk - Sakic - Jagr
Shanahan - Demitra - Kovalev
Daze - Modano - Bertuzzi

Guerin, Bondra, Lindros as guys I'd also add. I'd love to see Fleury in a game like this as well.

Lidstrom - Blake
Leetch - Numinnen
Gonchar - Rafalski

Pronger, Ozilinsh, Jovanovski ...lots of good LHD.

Theodore
Roy

Who wins? Who the **** knows. :)

Why even bother doing the Penguins?

Penguins 2017 win. But barely.

Hard to say tbh. 2001-2002 team is so much bigger but also slower. Would probably have to stick to somewhat of a heavy defensive system to compete with the speed of the 2016-2017 team. Bure+Kovalev
together would be godly. Plus Lindros,Iglina,Bertuzzi,Pronger being physical and hard to play against I think would make McDavid, Kucherov,Crosby,Kane, etc struggle to get some offence. Both Back ends are elite. All six can move the puck and defend. It honestly it would be a good match between two different eras of hockey. I think 2016-2017 just because of the McDavid factor. He's simply too fast, too skilled and would create a lot of chances. Plus you got to factor in the other 3 lines too. I think their talent is better.

what rules to use? Rules in 2002 were a bit different when it came to physical Play and checks to the head.

The McDavid factor is what decides it for you? What about Mario Lemieux? Iginila in his prime? Bure? Crosby? Lidstrom?

Forsberg didn't play the regular season, but jumped straight into the playoffs and led it in points.

Should surely make team 01-02. He was the best player on the planet when he could play through the injuries of his screwed up feet.

You're honestly not sure if the 2002 team would win? That team would crush the current Stars.

01-02 to end the season (can't really remember the line combos)

Line 1: Simon Gagne - Jeremy Roenick - Mark Recchi
Line 2: John LeClair - Keith Primeau - Justin Williams
Line 3: Jiri Dopita - Adam Oates - Ruslan Fedotenko
Line 4: Paul Ranheim - Marty Murray - Donald Brashear

Defense 1: Chris Therien - Eric Desjardins
Defense 2: Kim Johnsson - Dan McGillis
Defense 3: Eric Weinrich - Luke Richardson

Goalie 1: Roman Cechmanek
Goalie 2: Brian Boucher

16-17 to end the season

Line 1: Travis Konecny - Claude Giroux - Jake Voracek
Line 2: Dale Weise - Sean Couturier - Brayden Schenn
Line 3: Jordan Weal - Valterri Filppula - Wayne Simmonds
Line 4: Chris VandeVelde - Pierre-Edouard Bellemare - Roman Lyubimov

Defense 1: Ivan Provorov - Andrew MacDonald
Defense 2: Some Bum - Radko Gudas
Defense 3: Some Bum - Shayne Gostisbehere

Goalie 1: Steve Mason
Goalie 2: Michael Neuvirth

The 01-02 team won the Division but lost in the 1st. The 16-17 missed the playoffs than lucked into Nolan Patrick. The 01-02 team would win.

I know the OP said favorite players, but I think a 2002 vs 2017 roster of your favorite team is more interesting

Flames 2017

Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Versteeg - Bennett - Brouwer
Stajan - Jankowski - Lazar

Giordano - Hamilton
Brodie - Hamonic
Kulak - Stone

Smith
Lack

vs

Flames 2002 (Unsure on some line combinations)

McAmmond - Conroy - Iginla
Lowry - Savard - Clark
Nichol - Niedermayer - Petrovicky
Berube - Wilm - Shantz
Begin

Morris - Regehr
Kravchuk - Lydman
Gauthier - Boughner

Turek
Vernon

2017 Flames would slaughter them.

2017 Flames would slaughter them.

If you took off the Gaudreau line and promoted the farm prospects in their place, that team would still murder the 2002 team.
