Bolts fans have had a hard on for an elite RD point shot ever since we lost Kurtis Foster, and that pretty much coincided with Dumbas draft year. The allure never really wore off
I had read somewhere that Yzerman really wanted Trouba in that draft but the Jets drafted him one pick ahead of the Lightning, who settled for Koekkoek (oof). Not sure why Forsberg wasn't at the top of their board.

At least Yzerman/Murray redeemed themselves with Vasilevskiy at 19.

He did according to rumors. There were a ton of really good defensemen that draft, and the Lightning wanted one. There was a rumor at the time that the Lightning had a guy not on most peoples draft boards that they were interested in, because it was possible one of those top dmen wouldn't drop to us, I remember at the time the buzz was that it was Hampus Lindholm. We really thought we were going to get either Trouba, Dumba, Pouliot, or Rielly and it didn't matter which.

When the draft actually went down however, and defenseman after defenseman was selected instead of the higher ranked forwards, including Lindholm, our entire fanbase thought we actually were extremely lucky. It wasn't just Forsberg who had dropped, Grigorenko was a presumed top 3 pick on a lot of boards and had fallen. We were going to draft one of them right?

We were so pissed when that defenseman was Koekkoek, a guy completely out of nowhere.

He ended up re-injuring that shoulder two years later and it de-railed his career. We did the same shit with Brett Connolly who mangled his hand, drafting kids without considering the long term effects from major injuries.

Vasy obviously worked out for us, but he was considered a 2nd round pick too. Our second round picks were all major reaches, Blujus and Hart didn't do anything and were major reaches at the time.

We got Pacquette, Dotchin, and Gusev later that draft, but seems like we've squandered a lot of our early picks over the past decade.

When Anaheim selected Lindholm our board was celebrating because it meant we were going to get one of the elite defensemen or a forward who could have been a top 3 pick.

Just goes to show you that you can't assume anything during the draft.

Yep. If they had just drafted the consensus 3rd or 4th overall ranked player in 2010, Cam Fowler, they don't need to draft Koekkoek in 2012 and could have drafted Forsberg. They could have also drafted Lightning killer Jeff Skinner instead of Connolly in 2010 as well. Had Fowler or Skinner made the team right away, butterfly effect means the 2010-11 season goes completely differently, maybe they still get to the Conference Final (and maybe to the Final), maybe they don't, a great what-if.

Yzerman's 1st round drafting in Tampa wasn't great for the most part and it definitely cost the Lightning a Cup or two while he was the GM. He was elite as a trader, team builder, and Murray hit on enough later round picks to build a great core. Coming in with Stamkos and Hedman here helped for certain.

…and if they draft Forsberg maybe they don’t draft Drouin in 2013 and select Seth Jones instead!

Fowler, Forsberg, Jones instead of Connolly, Koekkoek, and Drouin

This is fun

Its crazy to look at old draft days and all the rumors that would swirl around. for example, the 2014 draft where we wanted to trade with the Panthers for Ekblad and they wanted something around Drouin and/or Vasy along with a 1st i believe.

For those curious: reports out of Arizona is Dumba’s 2023-24 Signing Bonus of $1.35m is scheduled in his contract to be paid after the trade deadline. Meaning Tampa will be paying Dumba somewhere around $1.9m of his $3.9m contract this season after including the bonus.

Arizona paying the other ~$2m in salary before the trade. Essentially Arizona signed Dumba with the full expectation to trade him at the deadline and send the signing bonus to the new team, with or without retention.

We always assume by default that signing bonuses are paid on July 1st, but that’s not mandatory and many exceptions have come to light over the years. Including signing bonuses split into multiple payment dates.

Arizona retaining 50% on Dumba’s $1.9m remaining compensation would normally cost a 3rd round pick just for the retention. But Dumba hasn’t been playing at a level this season to justify a 3rd round pick even at 50%. Why Dumba was traded with a 7th for a 5th makes a lot more sense once you factor in that late signing bonus payment date.
