If Parise is going to the Islanders, it doesn't appear Suter is joining him,

The only "if" here is if that report is right.

Parise is going to the Isles, and if that report is right then Suter won't be an Islander.

I'd much rather have Suter than Parise, not the player he used to be but he's still a top 9 player who steps up come playoff time.

Yeah...Who wouldn't? That said it's not apples to apples. It's going to be...

  • Parise for 1M for 1-2 years
  • Suter for 4M for 4 years.

The weird thing is Parise say and his first interview said they already spoke about that playing together again. Maybe things have changed but according to Parise they did speak about it.

I thnik he did mention that right?

Anyway reporting isn't always 100%. Maybe Strickland meant that they're not considering it now.

Or...

Maybe it's a negotiating tactic from Suter's camp to Lou who maybe trying to get both of them on a discounted deal.

are teams allowed to talk to free agents before Wednesday?

Players that are bought-out have their contracts terminated immediately at that time, so they're free to speak to teams right away.

Players that are still under contract until the 28th are technically not supposed to speak with other teams but everybody knows that it happens.

Especially when minutes after free agency starts signings are being made and announced. Back door bargaining

"Washed up" Ryan Suter is still the best defenseman on about half the teams in the league.
Thats the same as when all last season Flyers thought that they stink only because washed up Niskanen, who was the shadow of his former self retired.
