I know a girl that is one of my friends (not girlfriend, you perv) that tapdances, and she has amazingly strong ankles and is very agile because of it. If you could take private lessons and you are comforatable with your sexuality, then that is a great way to do it.

I had to try out to advance divisions in my beer league. I sprained my ankle in the third game.I Did something stupid and kept playing through the pain. it took five months to heal.
Jumping up and down was the best way to strength train after that episode. squat and streatch first. Feet at 45 degree angle in a full squat with all your wieght supported by your big toes and your groin should be comfortable. If not you need to streatch till it is. Then do the jumping up and down stuff. PLyometrics I think you call it. Google it!
I have weak ankles and what I do is wrap them up with tensor bandages before I play for extra support. It doesn't make them stronger, but it helps a lot. I can't play without doing this.
