With the Sarnia Sting struggling to score a powerplay goal I was curious as to which teams have had bad powerplay starts over the years. Unfortunately the OHL website only goes back to 97/98 so that's where my research begins
So... here we go
Longest streak (games) .. listed is the game# that the team finally scored their first powerplay goal
Flint 2018/19 11 games
Sarnia 2021/22 7 games* (still active)
London 2018/19 6 games
Hamilton 2017/18 5 games
Saginaw 2011/12 5 games
Saginaw 2016/17 5 games
Saginaw 2017/18 5 games
Brampton 1999/00 5 games
Longest streak (powerplay chances)
Flint 2018/19 0/29
Saginaw 2017/18 0/26
Windsor 2006/07 0/26
Kingston 2007/08 0/22
Ottawa 2015/16 0/21
Sarnia 2021/22 0/21* (still active)
Guelph 2007/08 0/20
Now.. don't give up hope Sting fans! Three teams who had their worst powerplay start went on to finish first in powerplays at the end of the season
Erie in 2014/15 started 0/10 and didn't score their first pp goal until game #3 they finished with a 31.2% powerplay
Sudbury in 2010/11 started 0/15 and didn't get their first pp goal until game #4 and finished with a 24% powerplay
Niagara started 2011/12 0/15 and didn't score their first pp goal until game 4 and finished with a 26.8% powerplay
Only one team who had their worst start finished in dead last in the powerplay.. that would be the aforementioned Saginaw Spirit of 2017/18 at 14.7%
It should be noted that Kitchener is the only team that hasn't waited until at game three at least once, and the Soo has only made it to game three once.
