Or just stop fighting the entire universe for like 3 months.
Right. I've been pretty outspoken of my opposition to tanking. However, I'm also not in favor of trading away the future for a replacement. Let a kid or two play or find a cheap dman to help shore up the hole... play hard and play to win, but if that results in an organic tank (as the universe is pointing to) so be it. Booooo.

Hip AND back surgery, eh... poor Spurg. I don't like his chances at coming back anywhere near his normal level of play next year.

We have a lot of bad veteran defensemen on the roster as it is, but if you can upgrade on Goligoski/Merrill/whoever for cheap that might be worth doing. Defensible, anyway.

Taking a real swing at replacing Spurgeon with a player of similar impact would make me think that Guerin's seat is a lot hotter than it's seemed so far.

Roy or Spence out of LA seem like obvious targets to allow room for Clarke, the return is tricky but I personally would be talking to Freddy about how attached he is to that NTC with Dean out the door and his buddy Fiala in LA.

If nothing else, the added cap space allows us to be active in brokering deals between sellers and contenders/buyers with no cap space in order to get picks/assets.

Would also allow us to add a Chychrun(one more year at 4.6M), but i don't now if I'd like the cost.

Old, Small defensman having hip and back surgeries is locked up for a few more years. Another Bull Guerin masterclass on how to sign the worst f***ing contracts ever.

It's not that he is small, but that he is old. I would argue that bigger, old players are more likely to have bad back problems than smaller ones.

I really like Spurgeon as a player, but thought they could've paid him a little bit less...say around 6.5-6.75M.

On the bright side, maybe we can do a VGK/TBL trick, trade for a guy who makes 7.5M(Hertl?), then have Spurge ready for the playoffs. Long playoff run - confirmed!

I'd love to see the Wild broker their cap space into more picks and prospects again, but the guy who orchestrated that last year (Chris O'Hearn) is out the door now. Do they have a new cap specialist yet? I have my doubts about Guerin being able to pull it off. In the literal sense, I mean: I have my doubts that he is able to model it out on a spreadsheet and input the correct math into the correct cells.

Hey @Digitalbooya maybe this how you get your foot in the door for taking over the GM job. If you give a really good interview you can probably get this to be a remote job so you don't have to sacrifice your day job just yet.

I mean really all you have to do is be good at using capfriendly.

At this point I got to wonder if it's worth it for Spurgeon to come back. He's been pretty banged up in the past few years. Might just stash him permanently on the LTIR and move on.

Math is my specialty and I really enjoy spreadsheets; seems like a perfect fit. Someone drop Guerin's phone number in my DMs and I'll get the process going.

I doubt it. Seems like they’re being realistic about the outcome of this season & choosing the conservative route of getting this injury fixed with an ample amount of recovery time.

Spurgeon has actually been fairly healthy over the past 5 seasons (for his standards):

18-19: 82/82 games
19-20: 62/69 games
20-21: 54/56 games
21-22: 65/82 games
22-23: 79/82 games

This season has really showcased how bad our defense is without Brodin + Spurgeon though. They really need Spurgeon to come back healthy for these next two seasons.

Nagging injuries tend to turn to bigger injuries down the road.

I can't see why they'd trade for anything other than a 3rd-pairing d-man at this point. I am expecting that, if anything. Nothing else makes sense.

Hip and back surgeries, basically the two worst areas for a prolonged career after recovery. Wouldn't be surprised to see him LTIRetire before the end of the 24-25 season. Would be tragic given he's still a high end defender and they have nothing else remote close to his ability ready for when they get out of the worst of the dead cap.

After tonight’s loss Guerin seriously needs to start talking to guys about if they’d be open to moving.
