Yeah, some people just seem a little oblivious to some of the risks associated with sharing or catching drink bottles and the like. My sister survived it unscathed, but was in a medically induced coma for several days.

There's a ton of other things to worry about too. In my professional capacity I find it's the people who aren't aware of or are less like to care or pay attention to such things who tend to have a higher number of such problems among their demographic. Treat everyone as infected or afflicted when it comes to sharing drinks. Would the guys happy to share their bottles be happy to share a needle or unsterilised dental or tattoo equipment with the same guys drinking out of their bottles?

Not sure where the hell you guys are, but nobody is sucking on water bottles around here... You just squirt them into your mouth.... You are more likely to catch something on the ice with all the sweat and close proximity to other players than taking a squirt of someone's bottle.

THIS. If there's a water bottle on the bench I'll drink from it even if it's not mine.I just squirt some in my mouth. And I don't mind if someone uses my bottle as long as they're not sucking on it.

If someones literally sucking on a water bottle there's a bigger issue here than water bottle thievery.

That's pretty much it. I have no issue with team or collective water bottles where people are squirting from sippers and if it was a one off where someone was pouring a little back wouldn't lose too much sleep, but to be a filthy unhygienic slob about it and be thinking to do it on a regular basis is a little different.

Must confess I've just gone with the powerade for the last few sessions rather than the big bottle, but this guys been exclusively playing in black of late.

I did give him a decent rub along the boards when the opportunity presented that he took notice of.

So it's mildly annoying that some people don't bring their own water and drink others, perhaps really annoying for some, but it's also pretty unhygienic.

So anyway, last week someone at pick up was into my water big time; don't know who, but this week I sprung them chugging away.

Not one to cause a scene, I'm thinking I'll give them a little surprise next week. I wouldn't put anything dangerous or unhygienic in it, but tossing up between spicy or soapy.

What thinks ye Rinkers?

..or any other suggestions to learn him good.

I'll second a vote for salt water. It's generally harmless and I think he'd get the hint. Also, there is some science to drinking salt water and staying "hydrated": http://www.runnersworld.com/hydration-dehydration/fluid-loading-with-salt-water

As much as I like the ideas about drops of hab sauce, Vizine, or laxatives, as paranoid as it sounds, you might be treading a very fine legal line. We had somebody in a town that I grew up go to court for laxative brownies.

I'm not saying he didn't have justification:laugh:, but a hefty fine and a mark on your record shouldn't be a part of the end result.

Is bringing spiked water really a better solution than bringing no water. Either way you have no water.

Seriously, where do you guys play where people are deep throating bottles?

But not everyone else shares that point of view.

Some people feel that what's theirs is theirs, and nobody else should come along and take it while their back is turned.

Meaning they aren't going to reciprocate by drinking someone else's water. In the end, they are simply having their water taken from them.

Surely you understand why this is a problem from their point of view.

It's a ridiculous point of view. It's just water.

It's not about the value of water, it's about the fact that you only have a limited amount of it. When someone else decides to help himself, your supply gets smaller. Never mind the sanitary effects of putting your sweaty hands on someone else's water supply.

If there's a group understanding that the bottles are to be shared, that's totally fine.

Otherwise, don't be a dick and take other people's things without asking them first. This is fundamental to how people function together in a society.

Straight from the age of entitlement.

Oh yes, that's it.... No, straight from the generation that doesn't blow EVERY SINGLE ****ING THING OUR OF PROPORTION. OMG YOU DRANK FROM MY WATER BOTTLE THAT I LEFT RIGHT OUT IN THE OPEN, DURING OPEN HOCKEY!

Again, it's just water. You want to use my water bottle? Have at it. You drink all of it? Big ****ing deal.

And FYI, I'm the guy that brings the water bottles and pucks every game. Doesn't bother me in the least.

I'd also be willing to bet my tax contributions towards the "generation of entitled" far exceed yours.

There's a limited amount of water? Since when. When my water bottle is empty, I take the 1:30 that I would not be skating anyway, and go fill the ****ing thing up. I mean, it's rat hockey. Seriously? If anything, those complaining about "water thievery" are just a bunch of lazy, greedy *******s. Everything comes around full circle. If I'm the guy with the water bottle one skate, I guarantee I'll be drinking someone else's water at some point in the future.

Resorting to namecalling. That, like the rest of your post, shows that you don't understand the concept of "respect". Just another symptom of the age of entitlement.

It's not about ownership of or the value of water, but rather hygiene practices and manners.

There's certainly just a touch of irony though in calling someone that organises and brings their own water 'lazy' and 'greedy'. Where does that leave adjectives for the person who never organises or brings their own water, but is happy to guzzle away at someone else's and just perpetually sponges off others?

It's not quite the same as being lost in the desert with someone, having only one bottle of water and there being some basic tenement of generosity and humanity, while could there many more simple tasks in life than someone sourcing a bottle or container themselves and filling it with water before going to the rink? I'll bet they always find the time to pack their skates though.

I was wondering that as well.

I bring my own water, and I drink only from my water. What about that suggests "lazy" or "greedy"?

It suggests to me a little of a welfare mentality or mindset where one just expects or feels entitled to be provided for by others. I'm not talking about a team mate you play with every week who left something behind and makes mention of the fact who you chip in for and who you light lend socks or tape to or a spare pair of laces, rather just some random turning up to pick up and thinking they just help themselves to someone else's.

I'll throw a powerade to a team mate and not think twice about it or expect any reciprocity. That's different.

It's certainly interesting how some peoples' concept of 'team' and 'team work' may differ. In my experiences the most successful teams and organisations require people to pull their weight and add or bring something to that team, not just taking from it.

Some on a team push others along and some will pull others with them (and over the wall) but also when some people aren't passing muster they need to be brought into line.

As a coach or player I'd be less than impressed with the 'team contribution', organisation or reliability of someone that never brings water if it's a good idea to do so..or beer (and that's not just literal). I'd suggest most people know the type I'm referring to. Often late or not communicating if they can't make it or are going to be late. No room in the dressing room for their mom to come and dress them either if they need that. They too often won't pick up too many pucks or help put the goals out or away either.

Maybe some teams have higher expectations and standards than others? Taking responsibility for yourself, having some self discipline, and being reliable are both pretty important attributes.

If perpetually giving water to people is what makes you a better team player than the next guy, just maybe you ought to be called Bobby Boucher.

Better solutions that pissing in the bottle:

Asking them not to do it.

Talking with the rest of the players and figuring out how to get water for everyone there every week.

Bringing a difficult to open bottle to deter them

My suggestion would be to have a 5 gallon jug everyone put he's in $2-$3 to buy. Rotate who fills it.

Then you can bring your own water and nobody will bother with it

Again, if there is a team dynamic where everyone understands that water bottles are shared, that's fine. It's entirely up to the team and if an individual has a problem with it, he can be "that guy" and label his bottle or something.

We are talking about drop-ins where there is no team arrangement, OR a random guy who goes rogue on his team. In neither of these cases does "the concept of a team" come into play.
