best example I can give

Leading up to the 1979 draft the Oilers traded the 42nd and 63rd overall picks to the Minny North stars for the rights to Dave Samenko and the 48th overall pick

who was taken with the picks?

with the 63rd pick the North Stars took Kevin Maxwell but at 42 they took Neil Broten--who did the oilers take with 48th pick? Messier

do not go by hockey db that says Broten was taken in the 3rd round 21st picks in the first round and 42 picks in the 2nd

During training camp of 2000, the Flyers traded Mark Eaton to Nashville for a 2001 3rd round pick. The Flyers selected future Blackhawk star Patrick Sharp with the pick.

On November 4th, 1983 d-man Robert Picard was traded from the Montreal Canadiens to the Winnipeg Jets for a 3rd rounder in the 1984 draft. That pick turned out to be Patrick Roy.

Ottawa traded goon defenseman Brad Miller to Toronto for a 9th round pick in the 1993 draft. The Sens took Pavol Demitra with the pick.

When Guy Lafleur signed as a free agent with Quebec, the Rangers received Quebec's 1990 5th round pick as compensation. Sergei Zubov was the selection.

Leafs traded a 1st round pick to NJD for Tom Kurvers....and the Devils used that pick to draft Scott Neidermayer.

Leafs haven't had a defenseman since that trade (1991 I believe) who was as good as Scott.

2008 trade between the Bruins and Avs seemed like swapping garbage at the time but paid off handsomely for Boston.

Bruins give up Matt Hendricks for a 24 year old career AHL'er who looks like he'll top out as a 7th D...Johnny Boychuk

Who was drafted with a pick acquired in advance of that selection taking place is not at all relevant to value gained in the trade.

in theory, you're right.

but i think there's also a decent argument that having an extra draft pick give a GM a little more latitude to take a high-risk, high-reward player if he thinks he's also got a safe pick in the same round.

not sure if that applies to any of the examples in this thread though.

And we traded him to the Blues for superstar Christer Olssen.

Christer Olsson was a pretty anonymous player even in Sweden. Now when I googled his name (because you spelt/spelled ;) it wrong) the first hits that came up were of some motivational speaker that is not the hockey player.

Most of the time, those arms don't meaningfully touch.

Now, if you trade Trevor Linden for the 1st overall pick while you're on the clock, it's a little more reasonable to say it...but no one traded Rhett Warrener for Ryan Miller, that's - bluntly - a dumb way to look at it.

GMs and the involvement in scouting/drafting varies by team anyhow...

On November 14, 2003 the Flames traded a second-round pick in the 2005 draft to the Sharks for third-string goalie Miikka Kiprusoff.

It was a fairly innocuous trade at the time. The Flames were desperate for another goalie to shore up the hole in the lineup after starter Roman Turek injured a knee at the end of their fourth game of the season. Backup Jamie McLennan was pressed into starting duties and Dany Sabourin was called up from the AHL to back him up; combined they went 4-6-0-1 in the following 11 games before Kiprusoff was acquired. McLennan started the next couple games (1-0-0-1) and then Kiprusoff was given a shot.

He started 16 of the following 18 games and went 11-2-2-1 ('Noodles' had a shutout win and a tie in the other two games). Before Kipper's acquisition the team was 6-8-0-1; six weeks later they were 19-10-3-3. Of course we all know they end up having the best regular season they'd had in a decade, and took the Lightning to seven games in the Stanley Cup finals.

But the Sharks made out okay too. With that second-round pick they drafted Marc-Edouard Vlasic.
