I believe they have a couple of injuries in Abbotsford, this is just depth.
The fact he got a six thrown draft pick is pretty nice considering

Not to mention, I San Jose sixth is basically a fifth, not that big of a value difference, but still, it’s a free pick
Perhaps they're really high on Studnicka and think he can contribute as an effective NHL player, and don't see much in Cicek.
It's a 6th round pick, though. It's practically worthless.

A 5th turned into lafferty.
Late picks correctly are still worth something, even if it’s a longshot
I don't think it is unreasonable for a rebuilding team to trade a late round pick for a 24 year old if they think he can be a player for them.

We've had quite a few injuries at center since. Sturm and Carpenter are hurt along with Kunin. Couture has not played all season.
Pretty much a nothing trade. Studnicka looked OK at the NHL level. But there are others clearly ahead of him on the depth chart in terms of call ups.

Studnicka playing 1 game and having a player drafted in the 6th round playing 1 game for them is extremely low.
Hell, you could move that to the 4th round and the probability is low.
