Are Columbus Blue Jackets the NHL's Leicester City of the British Premier League (BPL)?

Both teams do not have star player and are considered very average, however, both play a solid team game and play for each other.

Do you think CBJ could win the Presidents Trophy similar to what Leicester City did in the BPL? Leicester City is now dominating the Champions League and perhaps could win it all. Could CBJ do something similar and win the Stanley Cup this year?

Could this be the Cinderella story the NHL has been waiting for so long?

Leicester City had longer odds to win the Premiership than the Cleveland Browns do to win the Super Bowl. Yeah the Jackets don't have stars but they have tons of depth and parity in the NHL is a lot more prevalent than European soccer.

Not really comparable at all

No, it's not even close.

The Greenville Swamp Rabbits winning the Presidents Trophy would be like Leicester City.

Yeah this.

Comparing a salary cap league to the BPL is impossible. Also Leicester had the easiest group by far in the CL.

No no no.

Not even close. Leciester City had 500-1 odds to do what they did. Columbus had, at worst, 50-1 odds

To be comparable it would be like the Oilers, Leafs, Jets and Columbus ALL advance to the conference finals this year. Or another better example would be an below average AHL team winning the Stanley Cup

First, Leicester apparently was a 1-year wonder, given that they are currently in a real fight not to be relegated next year.

Second, "Dominating the Champions League" is a very strong statement, given that only the group phase is finished, and many pundits feel they will lose their R16 matchup.

Third, I am not at all sure you can say that the NHL has sought a Cinderella for a long time.

Fourth, While the Jackets had a very poor year last year, they have generally been a middle-of-the-pack team, with a few playoff berths. That's a far cry from Leicester.

So, a few minor similarities. The year is not yet done. Enjoy the run for the Jackets. And, hope they do better in 17-18 than Leicester is doing this year.

Five thousand, actually.

Kim Kardashian had a better chance of winning the Presidency than Leicester had of winning the Premier League.

Columbus is getting great goaltending which can make any team stand out. Sure, the Jackets don't have real stars but the have a bunch of really solid players up front and on the back end.

Top that off with great goaltending and there you have it.

Aaah. I thought it was 5000 but then I had second thoughts because 5000 to 1 is so out of this world crazy. 500 seemed even high but I knew they were crazy long shots.

Dont have the source but IIRC a stats person worked out that it was like Browns winning Super Bowl, Rockies winning World Series, and 76ers winning NBA championship in the same year

Along the same lines, I read somewhere that in England if you were to put a parlay on Leicester winning the PL, Brexit passing and Trump winning the Presidency you would've won something like 50,000 pounds if you put down 5.

Way too much parity in the NHL right now to even begin to make that kind of comparison.

A comparable situation might be if Vegas won the Cup its first year in the league. Even then I think they might have better odds than Leiceister City did.

odds for trump jumped around like crazy. If you bet at the right time you probably would of made a fortune

If the NHL for some reason decided to bring up an AHL team as a new NHL team, and that team won the Stanley Cup, then that hypothetical AHL team would the the equivalent of what Leicester City did.

N'Golo Kante was a top level player for Leicester. Vardy, Fuchs and Mahrez are highly accomplished offensive individuals.

Counter-attacking takes high amount of individual skill which I think proofs that the Blue Jackets currently have quite much of that in both offence and defence.

Leicester were among the favourites to be relegated that season, so they were considered well below average.

Leicester is not dominating the Champions League and are seriously struggling in the Premier League this season. Their chances of winning the Champions League are minimal, approaching impossible even.

Not a very accurate representation of Leicester.

However, Leicester going and winning the Premier League is one of the biggest upsets in the history of sports. Columbus winning the Presidents Trophy would for sure be a cinderella story, but nowhere close to the level that Leicester achieved.

Leicester level would be the Arizona Coyotes going and winning the Stanley Cup this season.

Leicester had Vardy, a regular in the English national team. They relied heavily on Mahrez, a player often linked to the absolute best clubs in the world and Kante who is now a big piece in the team that has the lead in EPL this year (Chelsea). Cant really get how they aren't considered star players. Its a lot more lite Leipzig in Bundesliga.

Basically this. Although the Yotes winning the Stanley Cup now would still be better odds!
