Shouldn't we have 35 Cups?

[EDIT: THIS ARGUMENT IS INCORRECT, LE NATIONAL WAS THE PREDECESSOR AND THEY DIDN'T WIN ANY CUPS]

The Canadiens were founded in 1909 as a club to represent French people and replace the defunct Mtl AAA, which folded the same year and had served the same purpose and won 11 challenge cups. If clubs like the Sens claim their earlier Cups, shouldn't the Habs have 35 Cup wins and not 24 since they replaced the AAA and carried on the same tradition? Other Montreal teams representing the English and Irish won another 17, totalling 52 Stanley Cups for the City of Montreal. Including the challenge cups, Stanley has been handed out 156 times total.

Are the Sens cups actually being counted ? I didn't know that was the case. If it is first of all that's laughable

Second, if it is the case that should be standard for every team

They can have theirs if we get ours. :)

One of the posters at the link below claims the NHL recognized Ottawa's right to claim the Cups in a ceremony:

The NHL only considers cups won under its banner as official. Such is why the Vancouver Millionaire's winning it in 1915 has no bearing on the Canucks. Personally, I could care less about even the 1993 run. While great for the time, it's been 22 years. No one really cares about it anymore.

The Senators are a joke of a franchise. Let's not try to emulate anything they've done.

This. A million times, this.

Knowledgeable hockey fans know those cups belong to a defunct organization - and have no bearing on the current, jokey incarnation of the sens.

Actually a lot of people care about it. It was the last time a Canadian team won the cup.

Does any of this really matter?

It was all part of the last century, and about as relevant as the Russian Tsar.

Little play on words. Glad you noticed. All fun aside, I just don't put much stock into cup wins that have happened decades ago. It's certainly a nice for nostalgia, but I want to see us win it now.

The two aren't mutually exclusive. 1993 isn't so incredibly long ago. Lots of players from that team were relevant in recent years even. Now that they've all retired from the NHL, though, it's about time for another.

Not to mention that the franchise didn't even finish in Ottawa haha. The Blues would have more claim to those cups than the Sens.
