Should Umberger be bought out in June, 2016?

I would probably say no unless there is a no brainer acquisition that requires the 3M in cap space. No reason to take on dead money otherwise.

We are not winning much within the next few years. Why not just bite the the bullet now so when the prospects come up his contract will be completely off the books.

Yes.

It was likely the whole reason for the trade in the first place... the fact his buyout is pretty nice as the shorter term...

not really much downside to a buyout, especially as when you look at 2017-18 from a cap perspective:

Voracek ($8.25m) -- Giroux ($8.275m) -- Simmonds ($3.975m)
Raffl ($2.5m) -- Couturier ($4.33m) -- Schenn ($4m)
Read ($3.625m) -- Laughton ($2m) -- Konecny ($0.925m)

Del Zotto ($4.5m) -- Gudas ($3m)
Morin ($0.863m) -- Gostisbehere ($4m)
Provorov ($0.925m) -- MacDonald ($5m)

Mason ($6m)
Stolarz ($1.5m)

Umberger buyout ($1.5m)

$65.17m

so will likely be ~$6.2m space with 3 4th liners and a #7 to get... and that is assuming some pretty decent raises for people, some of whom will likely not be here, MacDonald & Read still being here and the cap not going up.

I said yes because he is one step closer to a clean team. Grossmann, Prongers contract, Vinny, Macdonald, L.Schenn and Gagner.

All but Umberger and AMac will be gone July 1. Amac is at least serviceable and his hit won't be so bad with ecls coming and so much dead weight off the books.

Vdv and white fall in the category of making this an unclean team but with their cap hit don't really factor

He's only on the books for 2 years, and it's only 1.5m. That's not hindering the prospects in the slightest.

This is a no-brainer. I've thought this option was the most attractive thing about acquiring Umberger from day 1. His buyout number is awesome.

I originally thought no just to have the clean slate in 2017/18.

But seeing what his buyout is, it's an easy yes. Having 3 million to use next year and the following year is better than 4.5 on Umberger in 2016 then 4.5 million in someone else.

Hell, just think, his 3 million saved + 4.5 saved on Vinny can be used on Boedker if we wish. Not all of it of course. But talk about a better use of money!

Only if, when Hextall evaluates the situation, he sees a benefit to freeing $3M for next season.

If he determines that the Flyers will have significant cap room for 2016/17, might as well keep him to get him off the books for 2017/18.

***I haven't looked at the Flyers cap numbers for next year, so it might be necessary to save the $3M next year.

I'd rather have $1.6M and $1.5M in dead cap space over two seasons than $4.6M in dead cap space over one, so absolutely, yes.
