No. If Chevy wants to make a change, the offseason is the time. They can promote Maurice to head manager of scouting hockey operations marketing special projects customer relations season ticket holder appeasement specialists. Or whatever job title they want to create.

This isnt our year - been obvious for a long while now. This is why it's good that Chevy didnt blow our future on a top d man rental. Tortorella is available this offseason. I'd like to see what a fearless coach could do with this roster. We've had a fearful one long enough. If not Tortorella, someone else, anyone else who isnt named Maurice.

But it wont happen. Maurice is Jets coach for life.

If we hire Torts we can kiss PLD goodbye. He didn't want to play for the guy in CBJ what makes you think he will want to play for him here?

There's a reason that any team Torts coaches there is either a mass exodus or he's gone within short order. Guys an ass hat. Torts gets one good season out of any team before the entire room quits on him, it literally happens to every team he's ever coached. Want to destroy a teams room? Hire Torts. He's a nuclear bomb for the locker room.

The Jets will never hire a Torts like coach, they know they need to keep talent happybin our market. Also Torts would never take a job here. He was a disaster in Vancouver and didn't even live there while coaching there from what i recall. He is an American that is going to want to stay in the States.

I think yes and no. The location scares some coaches off, but the talent on the team is probably enticing to some. It would be interesting to see a guy like Grönborg assisting one of the old boy's club members.

Yes and no and yes and no. The location is the location, but if you want to be a head coach in the NHL, there are exactly 32 places to do that -- which means that the pool of interested and qualified applicants is significantly larger than the number of available positions. In that pool there should be someone who isn't Paul Maurice and will have the potential to be a better fit than he is for this team now.

In terms of the when, I agree with many that it's a tough ask to bring in someone new and expect them to be able to learn the team in the next handful of games and lead them to glory. OTOH, I feel like all any coach has to do now is pick the best team, make them feel good about themselves, repair the giant hole in the wall that Blake Wheeler makes when he runs through it trying to save PoMo (he maybe forgot about that wall last night with that game-changing pointless double-minor) and let them go out an play. FWIW, I already like that team better than this one. But it won't be an outside hire.

I also think @Romang67 is dead-on with his concern that letting this ride until the summer risks the org deciding that he gets next year, with a potentially stronger defence, to try to "take things forward," or whatever clapped-out cliché they trot out to explain why he's getting a 4th kick at the can. I don't trust Chipman to resist the PoMo siren song given a whole summer to sing it into his shell-like, So I can easily see us doing this all over again next year -- and I don't want to do this all over again next year,

So, bring on the mums and cats behind the bench, and let's give 'er.

A timely thread, this. However this question may be somewhat more on point: "Should Maurice be fired after the playoffs?"

The data would come closer to something like a definitive conclusion. The current question is interesting but is clouded by conditions, and a lack of precedent.

No for the simple reason that I think the range of options might be better in the offseason. Plus there's that quarantine factor that Guardian17 mentioned.

But this is just a matter of timing. I'm fine with turfing Maurice in principle.

I agree Torts will never be behind the Winnipeg Jets bench. But a fearless coach who will make tough, unpopular decisions to try to win. Not a fearful coach who makes decisions to try to appease people (certain players/management), avoid confrontation and keep his job.

Interesting question to start thebthread but it's becoming a duplicate of the coaching thread.
