I'm not really advanced on analytics so let be deliberate with an example of what I am trying to get at, here. Spelling it out...

Say you have a really bad defensive team whos always hemmed in their zone because of bad defensive zone play. Their Corsi For is going to be negatively impacted due to their high volume of Corsi Against. You clearly cannot generate Shot Attempts while you are stuck in your own end often because of bad defensive zone play.

But, let's consider that when this same team does have the puck under control in the offensive zone (very less often relative to their opponents because of their Dzone play) they create shots for at an above average rate per zone time/possession.

They are still going to be have a low CF/60 and overall low CF%. Not so much because they are bad at generating shots (above average actually) but because they spend so much time in their end.

Obviously the flipside is that you are an average defensive team but below average at generating shots in the offensive zone. THe problem is you cannot look at the Corsi For or Corsi Against because one impacts the other.

So how do you 'confirm' or see if this is the case for a certain team. Shot attempts for and against per zone possession for/against. Do these numbers exist anywhere?
