A great example of people who prioritize getting the story first as opposed to getting it right lol
He doesn’t appear to be any kind of writer. Just someone people they unabatedly believed

As a Giants fan, this has a making of a dark horse team sweeping in and stealing a player. That might be my only hope of Ohtani coming to SF.

Was it literally just some rando online noticed a private plane’s route and a bunch of knobs ran with it and didn’t fact check anything?

Sheesh….

Toronto fans are tracking things such as private planes leaving Los Angeles for Toronto and dinner reservations made by Yusei Kikuchi that may signify a celebration of some sort.

This is exactly the same thing Toronto fans did during Summer 2019 with Kawhi Leonard, and he admitted that it turned him off.

It remains to be seen if the same will apply to Ohtani, who is generally considered a private person.

The behaviour shows stalker-type tendencies.

To be fair...
Kawhi watch was more Toronto media.
Fans knew he was to meet with management...
But the media were the ones who sent helicopters.

This time the fans were a bit more eager...
But again the media went overboard.
Someone found a plane that would go from Anaheim to Toronto...
And then an opera singer found out Kikuchi booked a Japanese restaurant for 50 people...
And the media just ran with it.
It turned out everything was true...
As there was indeed a plane...
And Kikuchi did book a restaurant...
But Robert Herjavec of Dragon's Den and Shark Tank fame was the occupant of the plane...
And Kikuchi wanted to do a surprise party for his wife.
Unfortunately...
The media did not fact check anything...
And it became a hilarious coincidence.
Worst of all...
The surprise party is no longer a surprise.

The media really screwed this one up. You had Morosi tweeting that he was on route, you had Sports Illustrated and Dodgers Nation reporting he was signing with the Jays and even MLB's official twitter made a post about Ohtani on route to Toronto. People on twitter started tracking a plane leaving Anaheim for Toronto and looking into Kikuchi's dinner plans.

The MLB media really needs to wear the L on this one. Absolute hack reporting top to bottom. No one vetted anything with anybody.

the funniest thing about all the reports of the plane that was en route from "anaheim to toronto" is that there is no airport in anaheim

John Wayne Airport is close enough.

It was a pretty stupid series of events, though.

I love how excited Torontonians got about it. They're so giddy to get nice things that normally are reserved for cities like L.A. or New York.
Toronto sports fans are the most emotionally unstable fans in all of sports.

They get into a maniacal frenzy at the mere thought of Ohtani playing for the Blue Jays, but watch what they will do if Ohtani signs elsewhere. They will get depressed to the point they drink themselves to sleep.

You see the same with other Toronto sports teams. It is either elation or depression, either of the two extremes.

Feels like a test and Toronto failed
What exactly did Toronto do?

It was Morosi that reported Ohtani was en route to Toronto, not the Blue Jays

Are you saying Toronto "failed" because Jays fan got excited when it seemed like Ohtani was signing with their team?

That's your idea of a fail?

There was no reason for them to ever think a signing was imminent. Even if he were flying there, so what. Players make visits all the time. I can see why one might think Ohtani was signing there if they read a bunch of Twitter bait and fall for it but if you take a minute to sit and really think about it there is zero reason to think Ohtani would have any interest whatsoever in uprooting himself to go move to Toronto to play for the Blue Jays

One, it's a joke, that this was all a test to see how the media and market. Two, I'm part of those Jays fans. Three, the basis of the joke was that even a primarily hockey based radio talk show was tracking the plane.

Four, I still love Morosi.

Uprooting himself? So basically you figure there’s zero chance Shohei would have any interest in playing anywhere aside from SoCal? It’s not like he’s got a family to worry about.

And if you really think about it, you'd realize you have no idea what the Blue Jays are offering Ohtani compared to other teams, and he could have 100+ million reasons to choose Toronto over a team in SoCal

I think if he were adamant about playing for a winner and the Jays last playoff win wasn’t 7 years ago he might consider it

There’s no doubt in my mind Arte and probably other owners will match whatever the Jays are putting on the table. And I definitely disagree that he could have any reason to play for the Jays, other teams have both won more and provide more comfort. What can the Jays possibly offer Shohei other than money that will be matched by any other serious player? Bagged milk?

Past success doesn’t ensure future success. Maybe being sold on being the face of another country is something that interests him?
