Now that's a smart signing, 2 years seems risky but it will be cheap for those 2 years. If you project him to hold his ground in the NHL, nice little steal of a contract

It's a 1-way contract by the way

Good thing that he is in the plans. RHDs who can be good defensively don't grow on trees. IMO, the best way to develop him would be to play him on Sanderson's right

Chabot - Chychrun
Sanderson - JBD
Brannstrom - Zub

Why Zub on the 3rd pair? They're very good together and that is a way above average 3rd pair

Very nice to get a cheap option with upside in the 6/7 role.

Wonder if we risk Thomson on waivers or try to get a late pick for him.

That’s good. He should be improved this year.
Kleven might be better than him already though.

We'll likely start the season with 8 D, and there's always injuries

Chabot-Zub
Sanderson-Chychrun
Brannstrom-JBD

Thomson, Hamonic/UFA?

Depending on the UFA, they'll get subbed in to the 3rd pair, but I see us rotating JBD and Thomson in the lineup until one of them shows they earned it.

Ideally he'd be packaged with DeBrincat to better the return

Or just keep Thomson as the 7th D? Depending on injuries, could have an opportunity to prove he can play in the NHL long term, hence have a bit more value

That’s good. He should be improved this year.

Kleven is a beast but he's LHD and JBD is RHD so they are not in direct competition... Actually JBD is our 2nd best RHD

Can't complain about that. Time for JBD to either make the team for good or become an career AHLer.

We wont go with 8D, don't see it happening, it's always been 7. And Lassi almost certainly wont be on the starting roster, he's not waiver exempt. If short term injuries happen and you need a stop gap, then it will most likely be Guenette or Kleven that will get the call rather than Lassi since they don't have to go through waivers. Only way I see Thomson getting a shot at this point is if there was a major long term injury and he improves his play significantly in the AHL to force their hand and give him a go. He'll need to impress in Belleville first though, if he gets the call and Dorion quickly sours on him, we'll most likely loose him in waivers. He has to stick once he's up.

Not being waiver exempt is exactly why we'll likely go with 8 if we pick up another body unless someone is traded. In the past, JBD, Thomson, and Brannstrom having waiver exemption was the reason we went with 7 D, no reason to have a guy in the pressbox when he could be in the AHL logging mins, but we have 7 guys under contract that need to pass through waivers if we want them to start the year in Belleville, that makes this year different.

Does Lassi need to clear waivers first if he is still under a 2-way contract to start in Belleville rather than on the roster beginning of the season?

2 way contract is just about what he's paid while he's in the AHL.

Every waiver eligible player needs to clear at the start of the year if you want them to start in the AHL.

The only grace is that with all teams waiving their 8th and 9th D, there's some safety in numbers, where as if we were to waive him a couple weeks into the season, he'd likely be the lone guy that day and more likely to get picked up.

Hamonic might cost too much AAV salary and might only sign here if it is for 2 or more seasons. I'm OK with moving on from Hamonic even though he adds some experience and physicality versus the other options we have. Would still like a big D who plays physical and strong defensively.

Oh ok, didn't realize he'll have to clear first. Wouldn't be surprised he's moved before then or maybe we take a chance and hope he clears at season start if that's his best chance not getting picked up. Carrying him as an extra 8th D when they don't think he should be up wouldn't make sense, you'll just end up sending him down a little later anyhow and also have a higher risk of losing him than doing it at the beginning.

Good signing, I imagine JBD will likely be in Ott to start the season next yr & it will be Thomson who will need to go through waivers. That's six D signed so far & I imagine they will extend Hamonic for next season. Interesting that they only gave Brannstrom one yr & JBD two yrs.

Ottawa has 7 forwards signed for next yr with DBC & Pinto pending. Wonder who they have in mind internally to take a spot or two & who they have in mind to sign from free agency. Reaves in Toronto will help them play a lot bigger & tougher.

Good deal for both sides. Not gonna lie, I was impressed watching Kleven and JBD do their trial run. Could be a thing down the road a bit.

Excellent signing. JBD can still turn into a top 4 shutdown D for us and if he doesn't, this signing doesn't break the bench.

I am going to be a contrarian here and suggest that Thomson makes the team out of training camp.

JBD comes from a very good school that seems to train their defence to play the right way. I expect that JBD will be one of those quiet contributors that gets better every yr & play a safe game.
