Eric Engstrand
Jean-Christophe Beaudin
Olle Alsing
Cole Reinhardt
Michael Carcone
Viktor Lodin
Luke Loheit

As we have been doing since 2004, we are going to use the HF criterias for prospect eligibility (less than 65 NHL games and under 25 y/o)

NHL Prospect Criteria - Hockey's Future

I have removed prospects who graduated recently (Jaros, Wolanin, Hogberg, Paul, Zub), were traded (Gruden) or not qualified (Hawryluk, Englund)

Remember to vote based on all factors and not just NHL readiness. Overall skillset, hockey IQ, upside potential vs floor, age, stats, skating ability, array of shots, leadership qualities, size/strenght, etc

Personally, I always ask myself, who would I draft BPA in priority among these players?

Try to do some research on the kids, particularly the new ones. People can post links and videos about some of the prospects that should be voted soon

It appears Miles Gendron has shrunk. He was listed at 6'3 back then, listed as 6'1 now. Gotta be rough for 24 year old.

My goodness it is both hilarious and so sad looking back at those lists...

Just goes to show how difficult it is to project which prospects will be the ones to have success and which will not.

Yes it is difficult, that's why the draft is not an exact science and there is absolutely no concensus outside of maybe some top picks and/or tiers at the the top (but even then, will never have full concensus outside of McDavid/Crosby type picks)

But there's many things to consider here :

- Scouting has evolved. Maybe not as much for the real scouts although they seem "less wrong" than before because I think they "overscout" as much as possible now since top picks can be determining for your franchise and it might have a big money impact down the road. Sure you need the "eye for talent" but they probably have more viewings and tools than before

- Scouting has evolved for amateurs. There's just much more info available, internet is such a big tool. Sure, it will never be as good as traveling and watching these guys play live but it still gives you some valuable info. Real scout info has evolved and we have more access to their evaluations than before, including coaching staff that has an handle on these young guys. Personally, I always look to read/listen to coaching staff reviews on players.

- Experience. I don't know for you, but I have much more experience in "scouting" than 10-15 years ago. Still will be wrong a lot of times but experience always help. Some patterns and development paths become similar, you can sometimes relate to previous prospects

- Some careers are derailed by injuries. A lot of regular NHL players have their career derailed by injuries but prospects (ex : Stefan Noesen, Jarrod Maidens) and young NHL players (Jared Cowen) too. This is impossible to predict (however in Maidens' case we knew at the draft he was already dealing with concussion issues)

- Some players somehow never transfer well to the pros or to the NHL. Sometimes it can be surprising. Experience can possibly help that next time, "we might see it coming" but still very difficult. Ex : Matt Puempel. I have no idea why we overrated him that much as we constantly ranked him over better prospects but a guy with his goal scoring prowess and hands should have amounted to at least something more. It ended up that he was pretty unidimensionnal but looking back, I think it's because we were always waiting and expecting his game to progress but in reality, it never pogressed enough over the years. Even if he scored 30 in the AHL, he probably looked much more promising in his 2 years before being drafted. We could give many more examples but I'm sure you get the point. For me the biggest mystery has aways been Andre Petersson. No idea how a guy with that skillset wasn't a NHL player. He was on the small side and probably not fast enugh but also probably lazy and/or lacked desire and determination. Pretty hard to become a NHL player just based on skill alone. I'll leave a few videos at the end of this post. Look at his WJC highlights. Look at this shot lol. We were quite high on him after the 2019-10 WJC but I don't know, he never pushed it farther. Pretty good KHL player though

- Some players can have major flaws (ex : Mark Stone skating) and then overcome it to breakout as good/great players. We underrate them at first because we didn't expect them to become as good. Look at the 2011 ranking for example, several guys were underrated. If we knew how good they were going to become, some others would have been ranked lower.

- There used to be a lot of people voting for "most NHL ready" prospects as the MAIN factor. That's why I think guys like Erik Condra and Colin Greening were over-ranked for example.

- Also, keep in mind that usually, players after the top-10/15 are just average prospects. The top-15/20 is crazy this year so it can't be compared to any pool we had before. I think 2012/2013 is the closest.

Only 31 votes? Hey there's still some guys that deserve to be voted after this one!

Kevin Mandolese had a fantastic 19 y/o season. I saw him in 2018 rookie tournament freshly after he was drafted and liked his potential more than Gustavsson

Angus Crookshank has had positive reviews from his rookie and sophomore seasons in College. He could/should continue to progress into a legit prospect

Maxence Guenette turned 19 y/o this year, he's on an interesting development path.

Daoust looks good so far this year. Will be a prospect to keep an eye on

Don't know what to think of Tychonick. He was a 2nd round pick just 2 years ago. He has talent but he needs to do something with it. Could still possibly res-establish himself

Merilainen is a fresh pick, will be a long term project. Off to a good start

Kelly, Novak, Kastelic arealso "decent" prospects that could maybe play on the 4th line eventually.

Don't see much of a NHL future for the rest but that's at least 10 guys left to be voted including Lajoie

I had not voted yet, not enough knowledge on the remaining prospects to really make a strong selection.

Decided to vote for Daoust as I think he will be one of the risers on this list in a couple of seasons.

Of course it's normal to know less about prospects once you go down the list. But since we are not doing this professionally and it doesn't "matter much" in the end, if you can do some reading, watch a few highlights and look at their stats, you should be able to have an "impression" or a gut feeling on them

Daoust is not a bad pick here, a guy that could potentially rise up the ranks once a few guys have graduated and he proved himself a bit.

For me the 3 guys I have the most "faith" in among who's left are Mandolese, Crookshank and Guenette. Guys I had a positive vibe right from the start and progressed nicely since. They still have a long way to go but are on the right track.

Oh and regarding Davidsson, I think we are selling him a bit short, based on that ranking, he was ranked #5 in the Blue Jackets prospect pool just 2 years ago (Abramov was #1)

Search

So naturally he "regressed" due to injuries and missing time but he could still rebound nicely. He's just been very unlucky since being acquired
