Doesn’t really make sense to me. Yes his contract is bad, but this is during rebuild years where their cap situation looks good. I’m years 3 and 4 it’s going to add on 1.8M dollars right when a bunch of RFAs need new contracts

Questionable move but I think it could be better for him to get a chance somewhere else and try to become at the very least a good middle 6 RW.

He's been a productive player the last few years. Especially if he's been dealing with addiction, I think he's a pretty good bet to bounce back and be at lest a competent bottom 6 scoring option. Depending on what his contract demands are, I can see quite a few teams interested in his services.

He's going to be getting ~11.3m of the 14.5m on his deal, all he needs is $1.6m/yr for the next two years to break even. Even on 2 years of league minimum this won't actually cost him that badly.
