Senators coaches had their salaries reduced before the NHL intervened

Is there really no loophole the league can use to get rid of Melnyk? The guy is nothing but a black eye to the league and fodder for endless "LOL cheap owner doing cheap things" jokes.
Unlikely unless he actually becomes insolvent. Very hard to force an owner out, even when Sterling was forced out who made comments that were much more damaging to the leagues reputation (and considering how much of the league has African heritage). That case was only resolved when Silver lost a competency hearing to his wife. The NBA booting him never went to actual trial. You also have to realize out of the major leagues, the NHL is the most weak willed. The NFL will force out anyone who disgraces the shield (look at Richardson in Carolina) or allow anyone who has caused the league problems to get ownership (Trump/USFL).

I also don't think the other 31 owners want to force a sale right now potentially damaging what they claim teams sell for.

Melnyk's bad, but he's mostly a local disgrace, the other 31 teams fanbases hardly care about him. It's not like Marge Schott or Donald Sterling where what they have said or done is damaging to the league's national marketing.

How f***ing stupid can someone be? Melnyk is a living proof that being rich doesn't necessarily go hand in hand with being intelligent.

Melnyk treats the Senators like a business and to try to maximize profits. Guess he forgot that the NHL actually has some sway and he has the public to answer to, as opposed to the rest of his enterprises.

One way to make profits in the long run is to take good care of your product's (and yourself's) public image. Did he really think no one would find out, he was trying to be cheap (once again)?

It's easy to take cheap shots at Melnyk over this, but you have to consider:

- The Sens have already laid off other staff or put them on a reduced work-week.
- This club didn't make the playoffs, so the coaches haven't worked since March. We are facing the real possibility of that period extending to near a full calendar year.
- Teams are almost guaranteed to lose tens of millions of dollars in 2020-21.
- The Sens were a small-market team with a cash-poor owner to begin with.

This isn't just about the Sens. You better believe that every single NHL franchise is looking at dramatic staff reductions and salary cuts if 2020-21 doesn't get off the ground on time. They can't just sit there and lose millions and millions of dollars indefinitely, something has to give. Smaller franchises will be the canary in the coal mine, but this issue will also swallow the big fish in due time.

You shouldn't have to cut corners the way he has for years now to be successful and make good money running an NHL team in Canada. Here in Texas, the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Longhorns have been terrible teams for over a decade, but owning a football team in Texas is obviously going to make you money if you can at the very least stay out of your own way. Even if you can't, it's still pretty hard to screw it up. There's no excuse for Melnyk's incompetence.

OT, but the Cowboys have only one sub-.500 season since 2011. That’s nowhere near terrible.

edit: and for that matter the Longhorns only had 3

Oh i'm sure Melnyk makes a profit and would still even if he didn't cut corners, but the point is he can maximize his profits by doing so. Just like many brands have degraded in quality over the years to cut costs, that's what his strategy is with the Senators. Most owners treat owning a sports franchise as a status symbol or for pleasure, Melnyk doesn't fall under either of those categories. Realistically, all the bad press doesn't cost him a penny since he's shown he won't sell unless someone ponies up to his asking price.

Bunch of you might want to worry about your own owners instead of throwing stones.
The "Melnyk Cheap" joke is low hanging fruit, so have at it if you think you're being witty

Tweet was from Frank Seravalli for those curious

"News: At least 17 #NHL teams have reduced the pay of hockey operations staffers, including GMs and coaches, as they feel the crunch from COVID-19 and the uncertainty of what lies ahead."

So at this point, I can still throw stones.
