The Flames PP is back which really helps. So bizarre that a PP that was almost historically awful is now producing at a decent clip in recent weeks.

Be more weird if the exact same thing didn't happen last year.

I can't explain it. How can we start two years in a row so god awfully bad at special teams then have a few months where we are the best in the league.

It makes no sense!

Not really. When we played a traditional two high defencemen set we really struggled. We struggled with that formation last year too. Since we switched to a 1-3-1 we've been operating at about 35%.

I'm assuming it's all due to Johnny Gaudreau?

Paging WhiskeyYourTheDevils?

Yeah I definitely don't agree with those who have this sentiment either. Both monahan and gaudreau have looked fine playing on separate lines and only coming together on the power play. I think only 5/12 of Monahan's points in this stretch have also involved gaudreau on the point as well. Obviously good players play better with other good players but he's not a parasite.

I'm sure he'll find someway to downplay Monahan's level of play. Now that him and Gaudreau are on seperate lines, I'm genuinely interested in what the excuse will be this time :handclap:

Nice to see Monahan back to playing like he can. It seems most people forget that he's a 22 year old who is still learning the game and he is going to have rough stretches where things aren't going his way.

To be honest, didn't know they were on separate lines.

Thanks for the heads-up :)
The Flames top 9 is put together quite strangely. Monahan (our #1C) plays with our #3LW and #2RW, while Gaudreau (our #1LW) plays with our #2C and #3RW, leaving out other line in the top 9 to have our #1RW, #3C and #2LW

Playing WhiskeyYourTheDevils advocate; Monahan does get Versteeg on his line :naughty:

Jokes aside, his play on PP is dominant. Really one of the top tier space finders/sniper combos in the league (won't create it himself). Really the next steps for this kid is continuing to improve on the possession side of the game and the defensive side of the game.

That's what is great about hockey.

Chemistry can come from strange places.

Last year we played Hamilton and Giordano together and that's when we got all of our success.

This year we started the year 1-3-1 and it was so bad we changed back. Only recently have we gone back to it.

Brodie is playing like a stud again, that really helps. He was a monster last night.

Hamilton and Gio started last season together as Brodie was injured and that was terrible, but of course them playing together wasn't the only reason for that.

Ya the first ten games when Giordano was a zombie. From February onward though, those two led the PP.

This 1-3-1 is completely new this year.

Oh, I misread and didn't realize it was about PP, sorry.

Fair enough. I'm still not sure how I feel about the 1 -3 - 1.

Obviously it's been working and the passing has been unbelievable but it feels weird to not use Giordano and Hamilton on the #1 PP.

Pretty good for a 3C. Its especially impressive to me given how lethargic our PP has been this season.

He has found some great chemistry with Versteeg, and when he is on the ice with Gaudreau they do the same things they have always done.

Having an extra playmaking winger (Versteeg) has allowed the Flames to deploy Gaudreau and Monahan more dynamically.

He's been very good on the power play. Pretty invisible outside of it though.

Has he changed from 3C to a PP specialist? Or is he both?
