The media reaction to this one is going to be hilarious...some people, like Pat Tabler on the Jays broadcasts (he spent the entire 3 game series vs SD this week praising Kemp), still think Kemp is a star.

Kemp has good 'TV stats' so to say but his OBP is subpar and his defence is apparently awful.

If SD is paying 10-12 M, that basically means Braves are paying Kemp 15 M per or so. While escaping commitments of 6 M, 6.5 M, 7.5 M and 8.5 M to Olivera. SD has to be getting a prospect. Or they really wanted to clear the way for Hunter Renfroe NOW.

I went to Toronto this week and caught a game with a distant cousin who I hadn't seen in 20+ years. He kept citing AVG/HR/RBI (plus wins for pitchers) as the measuring sticks for players. I had to bite my tongue and remain polite.

It's too bad about Kemp. He performed about as I had expected, but I was hoping it was more symbolic in that ownership was ready to spend money.

On the air this morning, it was said that the plan going into the offseason was for the Braves to chase either Cespedes or Bautista for some pop. They were planning on spending $20 mil-ish or more for each (per year). When this deal came up, the Braves see this as skipping a big move in free agency as well as saving about $12 mil a year.

It was also said that the team knows that Kemp's numbers aren't all fantastic, but this was a move purely based on getting any power while ridding themselves of Olivera.

One final note is that the GM, Coppolella, has admitted repeatedly, that the Olivera move, even without the charges, was a terrible move that he regrets.
