calling out Phil won't do anything. Mentally he's already checked out of Toronto. Ever since Feschuk implied Kessel was the reason Carlyle was fired and NOBODY in this organization stepped up for Phil (even though it may be the case), he has given up on this team and is waiting to be traded. He has no reason to put any lick of effort.

At this point I just want to see Phil play with a truly great player. You see it at the World Championship or Olympics. This guy thrives in those scenarios. He just doesn't have the mental fortitude to lead this team. The moment someone else comes in to do that for him, be it in Toronto or somewhere else, the sky's the limit.

I wouldn't give up on him. He just needs to be put in the proper role.

Really appreciated Horachek's post game remarks regarding attitude and professionalism. Without naming names, he reiterated how player's actions and attitudes aren't lost on the fans or management.

Expect heads to roll.

"...One thing you can give to your tea mates and the fans and is your attitude and your approach to the game - your work ethic; that doesn't have to change...if you can't bring an attitude and a good work ethic while we are short, that's not good enough for me".

He goes on to discuss how 4th liners are bringing it, trying to make a difference...without naming names, the big guns aren't being accused of making an effort at all.

Yup, they're mailing it in for sure.

Anyone NOT sick of these clowns?

Horachek is all bark and no bite.

The guys that give it all (Carrick, Sill), get half the ice time that the highest paid guys get.

You have to believe in your own message before you expect a team to get it, regardless of where you are in the standings.

I half agree. you have a barn full of corporate seats who wan to see Kessel and Phaneuf and JvR out there. You want to serve the clientele, but on the other hand, I think you have to send the message and bench the guilty parties. He did so with Lupul. Can he d it with Kessel? Has he been told not to do anything to lower his trade value? Or make him angry/ uncooperative, perhaps?

Not making excuses, but I think he might have been instructed to let them all hang themselves.

As long as they hang for this, I'm fine.

Horachuk doesn't seem too bright. His comments really serve no purpose this time of year.

Or he's brilliant in knowing that he'll never be a good NHL coach, so he's carving himself out a niche as the perfect "tank" coach able to get teams to the basement for a good draft pick .. And could get hired on that basis...

;)

The team doesn't show up ready to play and thats on the coach??? really?

Not sure how you derived that from my post but ok.

You're expecting them to come out fired up and ready to go next game because of this?

This.

Guy keeps crying but does nothing about it. It's the definition of insanity. Repeating the same mistakes, expecting a different result.

How long does Bozo get to be #1 center? like really? Pretty sure Holland (who is not close to a #1) can pace Bozo's 40 points if he was on that line.

I expect them to show up and play with some pride, maybe impress their future teams.

Great.

What does that have to do with Horachuk's comments serving no purpose?

He has the misfortune of having to face the media every practice, every pre game skate and every post game. They ask him questions. He answers them truthfully. What do you want him to say? Should he echo Kessel's lame sentiments and say: "it's not like they aren't trying"?
They have no pride, no character, no professionalism. He's not required to cover for them.

they stink Why should he pretend otherwise? Shots were 21-8 last night after the first. Did they come ready to play?

That wasn't just "people" questioning their effort, it was their coach.

Kessel's sense of entitlement is sickening....and it is making me like Phanuef more and more every day.

According to the National Post, an unidentified fringe player reveals that Toronto Maple Leafs’ dressing room is ‘pretty screwed up,’. The “screwed up” part was not that Kessel, Tyler Bozak, James van Riemsdyk and Joffrey Lupul had seemingly taken the night off. It was that the fringe players who actually did show up — Sam Carrick, Richard Panik, Brandon Kozun and Zach Sill — were not rewarded with more ice time for their efforts.

TORONTO — While Phil Kessel was getting defensive about a reporter’s insinuation that he and some other core players had checked out and were no longer giving their full effort, a few stalls over a fringe Toronto Maple Leafs forward was shedding light on just how dysfunctional the dressing room had become in the last month.

“It’s pretty screwed up in here,” said the player, who requested that his name not be used.

When asked what he meant by his comment, the player laughed and then referenced Thursday night’s 4-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks. It was a game in which goaltender Jonathan Bernier compared the Leafs to a “junior team” and head coach Peter Horachek criticized the top players for going through the motions.

But the “screwed up” part was not that Kessel, Tyler Bozak, James van Riemsdyk and Joffrey Lupul had seemingly taken the night off. It was that the fringe players who actually did show up — Sam Carrick, Richard Panik, Brandon Kozun and Zach Sill — were not rewarded with more ice time for their efforts.

Apparently you want it spelled out for you.

He is asked repeatedly why the team can't play like they care.

His only possible answer is that they don't have the correct attitude or work ethic to give the fans and their teammates what they deserve.

Carlyle said pretty much the same thing. They reasoned, begged, pleaded, and shouted with no positive result. The team just doesn't have the character that it takes to overcome this kind of adversity, and there's no reason that Horachek or anyone else should try and whitewash it.

What's your issue with Horachek being transparent about the state of affairs?

Top line should all be moved out. Good for the fall in the standings but they are useless beyond this year as Leafs. Time and time again these guys choke in the tough going of the playoffs drive. Enough already might be the only option.
