Part of the problem is this endless debate about whether or not tough guys prevent these things.

In all honesty, I don't want a tough guy who will stand up to Dubinsky or Callahan.

I want a psychopath who will just run them repeatedly afterwards.

IMO your traditional enforcers don't prevent anything. One of their players runs your star, then your goon fights their goon after a faceoff and senile old men bleat on about toughness and grit. Your star will get run again and the overweight guys who can barely skate will come out and dance again.

Someone like Lucic absolutely does act as a deterrent to a certain extent because he can actually skate with our stars. He's also just a bit unhinged and looks like someone who cultivates a lovely burial mound in Sarajevo. Nobody needs to know that he's from Vancouver.

Dubi and Cally won't answer to Lucic. I always will agree with Ogre (from last thread) and IC on this one.

Player safety has to be a focal point eventually. Get that garbage out of the league once and for all.

I too wish Matt Cullen was my dad.

I've decided my completely unrealistic trade dream of the window will be somehow coaxing Benning into the belief that Hansen for Fehr is a more or less fair deal. Maybe throw Bennett in as a sweetener.

edit: Also holy **** there's no one left at WBS.

Lucic would absolutely be a great fit with the Penguins, I feel. He'd be what Kunitz used to be on steroids.

We may have a fast team, but we PLAY fast. It goes beyond just skating fast. Our team identity doesn't require 12 barn burners up front. Sullivan's Penguins love to battle, make quick plays around the net, etc etc. Lucic being the PWF to replace Kunitz' production isn't the worst thing in the world. It's not a matter he'd protect Crosby and Malkin to me... it's he would make us even harder to play against.

With all that said, he wants to go home and he wants to get paid. Vancouver or Edmonton will get him, I reckon. And considering the cap structure of our team, and the likelihood Kunitz isn't moved... moot point to consider.

agree with this completely. i don't believe for a second enforcers do anything, but i still have the same emotional reaction as everyone else when someone goes after crosby. let's just admit we want someone to hurt them when they come after our guys, but that it probably isn't going to happen, and be done with it. as nice as it would be, it's not gonna win the cup, which surprisingly is more fun than seeing dubinsky writhing on the ice

I think Farnham would look really good for us right now.

If by answer to Lucic, you mean fight him, I'm fine with that. I don't want him fighting them. He'd win, it'd be pointless. What I like about Lucic is that with him on the ice, they'd have to stop and consider whether running Crosby is worth getting run in turn by Lucic. They don't have many brain cells so that could be a difficult calculation for them to make.

Given the run that Lovejoy just had I wouldn't expect him to say otherwise. At the end of the day we don't have the cap situation to get it done without Lovejoy passing up his one chance for a payday.

I think the most we could offer would be along the lines of $2 million per for 2 years, while I can see him easily getting 3 years/$10 million in free agency.

Cole said in the closed thread:

The one thing I loved most about the Pens is that they didn't even flirt with the idea of being tough or getting into post-whistle stuff. That stuff absolutely tore the Pens apart in the past because they stopped focusing on their game and started focusing on physical garbage. This year they thrived on turning the other way and playing their game hard/fast.

Do i want Lucic out there intimidating other players? No... because then it starts the nonsense that I hate the most. Then every post-whistle scrum would include Geno/Lucic/Letang getting into garbage that I don't want to see. I loved that they put their heads down and went to work. I think that was one of the strongest parts of their game in the playoffs.

I am of this mind as well. You can not send inconsistent messages, especially when you have idiots just itching to go off the reservation on this, starting with Letang and Malkin.

The discipline of the Pens is one of the primary reasons that they won the cup. Not just from the lack of stupid response, but that they got a reputation for that by the end, which resulted in fewer penalties being called against them. A reverse Matt Cooke effect if you will.

This Pens team is not soft, does not shy away from their game or the tough stuff in the corners, so I do not see the problem with going as they have.

The minute you start down the opposite path with even one player you muddy the waters entirely and you just know that it falls apart for the rest of the team who will feel free to do the same.

I am hit or miss on Lucic. He goes against what I believe we are trying to build here, but then again he is such a great player. Depends on how much and what kind of term her would command. If we are looking at 4+ years I would pass on him (which I assume he will get 5 or 6 from some team).

The big contract guys are already on the team, 4-4.5M players who are better top 6 options than Kunitz or Rust should be our wheelhouse. Also, they should have 3 years or preferably less in term. Not sure who is out there who fits that bill, but that's what we need.

Likely his last chance, so Lovejoy should absolutely chase his payday. It won't be here.

GMJR describes Geno injury as "serious" and says there's 50/50 chance he needs surgery.
