Also, why is Harrington an attractive option to us if he doesn't make the Leafs team? Not saying I wouldn't want him, but it's not like the Leafs have some dynamic blue line. I guess I'd be concerned as to why he hasn't made their team and will be waived.

Thought we would have learned from Schultz (or Hagelin or Daley) that just because someone doesn't work out somewhere else, doesn't mean they can't work out here. No guarantee, but I wouldn't automatically use that as a measuring stick.

I still think Hudler is a good option for Malkin's LW spot, and unlike Ladd (who will almost definitely be getting something obscene), I could actually see Hudler getting a reasonable contract. Something like what Vrbata got 2 summers ago, a 2 year deal at around $5 million per.

See what we can do to pry Larkin out of Detroit, it would be a lot, but he'd be dynamite on the team. Wonder if a package like Pouliot+Bonino+1st would interest them.

Detroit would be bonkers to let him go. A stud Detroit born player. You build around Dylan Larkin. You don't trade him away.

But he doesn't bring speed to that line though. His speed isn't elite like guys like Rust, Letang, Kessel or Hagelin, he's just an above average skater. Saying that Ladd brings speed to that line is like saying Hornqvist bring sniping abilities to Crosby's line. He's not particularly big (6'2" and 200 lbs) and isn't particularly fast, so I have no idea how you can say he brings size and speed to the table.

I agree that his speed isn't like Hagelins. But it doesn't need to be. He's about as fast as Hornqvist. Good enough to get around on the ice and in on the forecheck, but far from great. As for his size, while he might not be huge, at 6-2, he's big enough and he plays a very physical brand.

Personally I think he'd be a great fit with Malkin. Even Malkin's game that he's playing now (pretty NS vs EW) is still a lot slower then Crosby's. I don't think his speed (at least in the next 2-3 years) would really be an issue.

For me, it's not his style of play, his recent play or his speed... it all comes down to how much he wants and how much term he'd want. For those two reasons alone I don't think he's a realistic option for us.

Why would Ladd be a better option here than Kunitz already is? Both had around the same production this year, both throw a bunch of hits and Kunitz has even produced better in the playoffs and costs about 2/3 of what Ladd will be making.

Really? Ladd still has the hand and smarts that Kunitz hasn't had for a while.

Why in the world would you not sign Bennett?

He could get a one year deal for < 1 mil$ and can play top 9 minutes if he is healthy. It's very low risk.

How come nobody is mentioning Stempniak by the way? I can't really see him being expensive. Neither would Vrbata or PAP be IMO.

Trade with Calgary

I believe the pens will win the stanely cup and have the 30th pick.

I was thinking what pens fans think of this trade

To Pens
Calgary's first round pick 6th
Roster player and or prospect

To Calgary
Pens 1st 30th
Goalie Fluery (50% retained)

Calgary really needs a goalie and with Murray playing well he could be the pens number one goalie.

Just as an FYI, someone who's producing around 40 points at ES is good, usually really good.

Kunitz|34/80 = 0.43|139/280 = 0.50

Hagelin|37/80 = 0.46|125/282 = 0.44

Hornqvist|36/82 = 0.44|115/246 = 0.47

Neal|44/82 = 0.54|132/248 = 0.53

Jokinen|46/81 = 0.57|132/286 = 0.46

Last season there were 18 LW and 17 RW (as listed on NHL.com) that have achieved 0.50 ES points per game (15 ES points minimum).
There were 38 LW and 33 RW that have achieved 0.40 ES points per game (same criteria).

Given that guys like Hagelin and Hornqvist are seen more as a great complimentary guys on scoring line means you have to shoot for 0.50 p/gm guys if you want real scoring winger. So here are all those guys from last season (there is their production from last season and last 3 seasons to get an idea where they are heading forward):

No more Bennett please. Do not even qualify him.

That would be beyond stupid.

How often are we crying for wingers? I mean that's what 80% of every one of these threads is about - needing more/better wingers for Crosby and Malkin. And here we have one who's young (24), has some size, who's skilled enough to be a top 6 guy, who's dirt cheap and the best part is already Pens property.

Do I think he'll magically be injury free and play 60+ games next year? No, of course not. Once he does it for a couple years, then we could probably bank on it happening, but until then, I think most will agree that it's unlikely he plays 50 games. Which is absolutely fine. Why? Because he costs absolutely **** all - either to acquire or retain. He's a 900k player who when he's playing, can play a top 6/9 role, and skilled enough to do well there. And when he's inevitability hurt, you put him on LTIR and give those minutes to Wilson or Sundqvist. And who knows, he might have finally figured out how to be healthy - other players have.

Qualifying Bennett is about as risk free as you can get.

Now maybe we don't keep him, but move him for someone else in a similar situation. Koko or Pulkkinen are a pair of prime examples. Koko is unlikely to sign in Boston due to them never giving him a chance at the NHL level. DET fans have said they'd do BB for Pulk due to Pulks own injury issues and their own F depth issues.

Honestly, I don't really care. Keep him, trade him for someone else in a similar situation, or use him as a throw in on a top 6 winger. But do something with him, instead of just tossing him away for nothing.

When does JR's contract run out? July? August? I know he's in his final year, probably Botterill will be replacing him unless the org wants LOLGuerin to be in charge, then we are ****ed on a Jim Benning level.

Hudler left DET for the KHL over money. I doubt he's giving anyone any discounts. If he'd do a 2 or perhaps even a 3 yr deal, I'd be interested, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that. I see him looking for at least 4x4m and I wouldn't give him that.

I think Rutherford is as here as long as he's content to be here - whether that's for 1 more season or 4 more seasons. If he's doing a good job and is having fun, odds are he'll still be here.

Even if we had our 1st round pick that's a bad trade for the Flames. Their 6th overall+roster player for half of Fleury and the 29th or 30th pick?
